So, he gets split into two, new Red and Leaf. The two hairs.

So then, he plots to kill new Red and Leaf because he's jelly. (It's k. No one can take his place.)

He grows fond of them though, and decides not to kill them, but to train them so they won't die.

I never really liked FireRed's character design, since the original Red's is WAY more badass, and I felt Nintendo kind of dumbed down his appearance for the sake of younger audiences...but after watching this video, and being able to attach a story to why he looks that way, I do believe I love FireRed a lot more now...
