love you guys. u remind me of me haha. im a "dork" too. ive been giving monoslugs enemas ever since i saw your video.. cats rock. i sold my hunter 34 and got a hobie 16. best decision ever.
Nice vid, bit grainy but you have captured the FUN!
I tried out a H16 a little while back, very impressed. The Guy who sailed with me was like WTF? as we were travelling pretty darn quick.
I find the only thing to watch is that lee ward bow, and not being scared to 'head up' if things get twitchy is not a bad idea...specially if the water is cold:)
Cats are a lot of fun, In fact I used to own a Hobie 16, but there are way better cats out there. I think I still prefer monohulls though because they can TAC.
The 1988 America's Cup was a travesty of sailing, the Americans were so desperate to regain the Old Mug that they had to resort to cheating to win - yes, cheating, they knew very clearly that the race was for single hull boats yet they entered a multihull.
Americans I worked with at the time said they were ashamed, the action had demeaned a classic event.
I once had a Laser, which is a terrific boat. I was going real fast on it on day while perfectly trimmed when an H16 just cruised by, almost effortlessly. My next boat was a H16. It was so much fun. Having said that, they are both terrific boats. The Laser is a 1 person boat, whereas you can easily can get 3 adults on the Hobie and fly.
Actually, multihulls are banned from the America's Cup regattas because they are so much faster than the monohulls. And the world record trip around the world by sail was set in a trimaran. You see, the multiple hulls add an incredible amount of stability by increasing the effective beam of the vessel while keeping a low displacement and waterplane area, which allows them to achieve faster speeds than monohulls without the increased drag and displacement. In short, catamarans are more efficient.
In fact, you can even research the 1988 America's Cup, in which a Catamaran was entered (not being specifically prohibited by the rules at that time) and blew away the competition. Look up "Stars and Stripes(US-1)" from the 1988 America's Cup, sailed by the San Diego Yacht Club.
Nice video guys, I have been sailing Hobie's for the last 25 years. That flat water is alright, but you good 10-12 foot day on Lake Michigan with a 8 second wave period will give you a completely new perspective. You will be surprised by the punishment these boats will take and still bring you home. Because of a death I witnessed on a Hobie 16 near Michigan City Indiana, I will not sail in the big stuff without a helmet for myself and crew.
GPS good for speed use mine on hobie too, and film speeds may be altered, but sensation and representation of speed is accurate...H16 are fast crafts with good trim and wind
I don't know if flying the hull is supposed to to anything for speed (by taking away drag) but I can tell you that my 200lb ass out on the wire is one hell of a counterbalance!
With both hulls in the water, the sheet tight in and with a steady 10 to 15knot wind straight across my beam I KNOW I'm hauling ass! Even though it looks like 30 or 40, I know I'm only getting up to 20 or so - but
Shit - I bought mine with a trailer - for $650. That was in 1997 - ten years later I'm still using it. (Actually I spent a few years getting to know how to use it!)
I had it out yesterday and flew hull all over Lake Lewisville (TX).
My comment on this video: "Looks like it was taken at 10 frames per second and replayed at 32".
I saw a hobie take down two sailboards and canoe the other day on lake ontairio. I talked to the skipper and he showed me his stainless steel shol keel. It was seraded and sharp.
Monohulls don't don't know what sailing is? Sorry I sail Laser Fulls and radials and the last time i did a speed check on my laser. I was in a Radial going 23mph or 20 knots(Verfiied by coach boat GPS speedo). Sorry but olympic class monohulls can fily is you know how to sail them
Sorry but the GPS speedo on my coach boat is accurate, and He was right next to me pacing me. This occured on 2003 Laser(Full/Radial/4.7) Nationals in Sayville, NY. The Wind was blowing a constant 20 on each of the days gusting to 30 at times. With that wind speed and a reach, 20knots is very capable speed. For a boat like a laser
Sail a laser in those wavey windy conditions on a reach. It's extremely possible. The GPS speedo is accurate on the boat. I have even compared it to the GPS I use on my skateboard to record speed and both are accurate.
yeah but I wasn't that heavy at the time I was on the radial. I was 140lbs at the tiome of thi regetta. Perfect weight to sail radials just as fast as a Full.
Video is pixilated, commentary is childish and devoid of content, and your not even going fast. Try a Toronado in 20k of breeze and you would be having a Hobie enema yourself. What you are doing has been done by many folks for many years..nothing new (or good) here. Monohullers are dry and probably enjoying a nice Chablis with their Bruschetta and Crab dip.
dude, shut the hell up. Hobie Cats Rule. I happen to own a 16, and race in Division 16 northeastern US.. i also have raced the f18 class Hobie Tigers. take your tornado, and SHOVE IT!
so what man, they had fun.me,i used to have heaps of fun with my brothers trying to keep our 10 foot sailing dinghy upright in 25-30 knots of wind.hard work & not that fast but awsome.gave our mum grey hair though!
Wow harsh feedback. Hey "Bud" if you truly are a Hobie enthusiast then you know that one of Hobie Cat USA's largest goals is regaining the youth so that they can actually have a future clientele base. And you my friend, are their worst nightmare: a snob ("i opted for a tiger", tool) who rags on all the people who are trying to get into it. Who cares if they exagerrated their speed. Let them have their fun.
I'm not a true hobie enthusiast, I'm a sailing enthusiast who happens to own a tiger, and a mystere 4.3. Maybe I am a snob, but at least I'm not a fag who makes shit up to sound cool on youtube. THese guys aren't trying to get in on it, they already are, example being the boat they are sailing genius. There is no point in making up stats though.
Wow...you guys are a couple of dorks. Oh, and who's minding the jib while you're trying to sound cool for the camera? You probably just learned the term "monohull" that day didn't you? P.S. How did you give a monohull an enema when you didn't come near one?
We are dorks, you monohull snob! The crew is minding the jib, fear not. That is one of the reasons we're going 20 knots...while you are on the couch watching TV. I own and sail a 25 foot monohull (a lot), and let me tell you, the Hobie is 3 times faster. Monohulls are fine...I use mine for slow sailing and eating cheese and drinking wine and camping. If you want to sail fat, get a catmaran, you ass.
Actually, i was sitting inside cause it was cold as hell in san diego. I own a hobie as well, but i opted for tiger instead of the 16 design. PS...you are not going 20 knots...no way in "wow, look mom i can actually sail out on the wire this year" hell are you sailing 20 knots. Everyone who has ever sailed on a hobie knows that if you look at the water it seems like you're sailing a lot faster than you are.
love you guys. u remind me of me haha. im a "dork" too. ive been giving monoslugs enemas ever since i saw your video.. cats rock. i sold my hunter 34 and got a hobie 16. best decision ever.

correction, mutihulls were banned, because the 33rd Americas Cup will be only multi hulls

SERIOUSLY - This is FAKE. The audio is dubbed. The video was filmed at about 10 frames per second and played back at 30!!!

True that. I make mine haul ass.

I have passed ski-boats pulling wake-boards.
seq165432 4 years ago
the only thing hard to believe is how clear (non-windy) the audio is. I have pulled a 10 year old on skis behind my hobie. cats haul incredible ass.
jwallis123 3 years ago
man the hobbie cat 16 is awesome, and they cost less than $10,000. anyone who just started sailing should try one of these babies.

I agree with mattquinn. There is no way in hell that your laser could reach that speed. Either you are lying, the speedo was dead ass wrong, or both.

Fastest speed on a Hobie 16 was 33 MPH recored on a radar gun back in the 80's.
