JULIE ANDREWS! Though Julie Andrews is an incredible singer, who I love, there is one version of this song that I prefer!
It is by BERNADETTE PETERS and is a breathtaking performance. I refer my friends on YouTube to check out the BERNADETTE PETERS version! It is truly incomparable!!
@LauraEH007 I love Bernadette's version too, I prefer Julie's version to hers though, but if I had to chose a favourite it would have to be Patti Lupone's, quite amazing! I do love the piano arranging Julie did here with Ian Fraser.
@LauraEH007 agreed....bernadette's has SOOO much more emotion. julie is great her vowels are perfection and her voice is beautiful. but bernadette's makes me cry every time.
@DanceInTheDark711 I'll have to agree on that! Bernadette always makes me want to cry as well, when singing this song, and Being Alive. What I like about this version is that, in my opinion, Julie decided to make it somehow a happy song, rather then a sad one... I always think, when Julie is singing, that it's about keeping remembering, and good memories...
@enolamsamoht Yes, there are two versions of the song. In Merrily We Roll Along, the show it's from, the song is sung twice. First we hear a woman singing it (sad version) to her husband on the day of their divorce. Later in the show, we see the same couple on the day they got engaged, and the man sings it (happy version) to her as his proposal. So what we heard earlier on was her reminding him what he had said when he proposed, only now it hurts.
I remember seeing Julie Andrews in The Boyfriend. She upset Broadway in a big way. I had ever seen such charm, and beauty, and wonderful singing and acting; in a show designed as a pastiche. Then, sorry, but I think I am the only one on earth who missed her in My Fair Lady. But then I loved her with Burton in Camelot. Saw that not Opening Night but the second night. Then of course, she took the world in The Sound of Music movie. The rest is history. And she only got better! So much love.
Oh, what a lovely comment! I always love to hear stories from people who were lucky enough to see her on stage! Of all the things I'd love to see at least once in my life, Julie Andrews performing is one of them! Thank you for taking the time to share that, honestly. And I hear, MY Fair Lady, was overwhelming...but who am I to say so? I was born far too late.
There's been a rumour in NY that Julie is going to have surgery to possibly restore her voice. The thought of hr singing again is....beyond comprehension. I pray. But these clips on YouTube are astounding. Thank you.
Now I see on the news that SHE has scheduled a concert in April, I think, of next year!! In England. Apparently she had the surgery and it was sucessful! What a joy! Even if she cannot tour, at least she has her gift back and can still record! Viva Jules!!
@JerseySurvivor A year ago I was lucky to see her in concert in Philadelphia with a supporting cast performing a medley of broadway tunes and a production of the children's book she and her daughter wrote, "Simeon's Gift." She said after walking onstage during the video of her singing "The Sound of Music," "I may not sing as highly or sweetly as the woman on that screen," and her voice dropped low, "But I can still sing the hell out of Ol' Man River." She sounded wonderful, operation or no.
I know, it's annoying sometimes... but you're very right, and I'd say if there's anyone who deserves all the beauty in the world, that's Julie! Thanks for your comment!
can someone tell me why the words/meaning are so different between this and bernadette peters' version? it seems bernadette is mourning a loss and julie is anticipating one (at the beginning anyway)... are they from two different points in "merrily we roll along"? i'm not familiar with the show...
They are indeed sung at two different points of the show.
the version Bernadettesings is Earlier on in the show (later chronologically) where the female singing is lamenting over a lost love and the pain she feels because of it.
The version Julie Andrews is singing now occurs later in the play (earlier chronologically) where the female singing I believe is singing right before she is about to get married. So it would be a much more anticipatory loving tone, at least in the beginning.
Julie's is singing the reprise (the first time, the second time she sings the one Bernadette sings), which actually happens earlier in time. Merrily We Roll Along goes backwards in time in the show, starting at the end and going back to the beginning.
Beautiful made me cry as recently lost the love of my life to heart problems.

I love how she makes this so warm. For once, this song doesn't make me cry. haha

I love it how she totally transforms it into a happy, romantic love song, whereas Peters sings about despair and goes totally insane.

@kopjetheemethoning That's also one of my favourite things about Julie's version! Thanks for leaving a comment!

My grandmother went to see her in My Fair Lady after my mom was born -- it was a gift from her mother. I'm still jealous.

Even as an older woman, she is shockingly beautiful, both in voice and appearance.
