for the few of you who may still be unsure as to why they call this man 'the beast,' in the words of the late biggie smalls, '..if you don't know, now ya know.'
Well...Daigo was very good at GGXX, but he never really won anything in it.
The best way I can put it is he was a 2nd tier top player. He could hold his own against most of the top players and he had a really unique aggressive style...but in the end he never really placed high/won tournaments in GG outside of EVO. I remember some guy, I think it might have been Yukinose, saying that Daigo could beast any game but he would never dominate GG like he did other games.
Perhaps you didn't read my whole paragraph. I said he didn't win much outside of EVO. Which you pretty much confirmed. Daigo never won any big tournaments in GG in Japan, and the skill level is vastly different there.
90% of American players of GG in 2003 couldn't even do basic combos, so it's not exactly impressive that he stomped a bunch of scrubs. And IIRC, he was one of like 4 Japanese players who entered...one of those 4 being Mago who doesn't even PLAY Guilty Gear and he got top 8.
But still, Daigo was a great GG player. But not among the best. He could keep up with the top players, but I wouldn't say he was the cream of the crop.
3rd place is not "winning" a tournament. One third place finish in what, 4 years of him entering SBO for GG? That is not a great record with the game, and outside of that one third place finish he never got much of anywhere. As the game progressed he lagged farther behind. He was at his best in GGXX.
He was a good GG player, but he was not among the best. Again I'm not saying he's bad, but he never dominated GG.
you missed my point. the reason I'm arguing with you still is because I think he's among the best. Placing third in SBO is a great feat., at this point in time... he WAS among the best. Not the best.
I simply disagree with you. Daigo was better than most, but not among the best.
I can name plenty of other players who got 3rd or 4th place finishes in SBO who you've probably never even heard of. One third place finish does not make him among the best. Especially when GG is held in a team format, and especially when as the game progressed(#R/Slash) he got less and less competitive.
But whatever. I'll agree to disagree. If you think he was among the best in GG I can't really change your mind.
I completely agree with you to be honest. Daigo is really good, but he's not the most amazing in this game. Hell, my friend can do the crap he does and he doesn't even main Sol Badguy anymore. Anyone praises him just because of his name, but honestly I've only seen Daigo go for Street Fighter tournaments. I saw him get assraped in KOF11 though while he was using the most overpowered characters (There was only one video cause he practically never plays), and people were still prasing him.
Oh my God... Someone that knows what he's talking about? BLASPHAMY! Daigo has to be the best! I mean, with Woshige raping everyone in Guilty Gear tournaments, he makes Daigo look like a monster.... Naw, I'm just playing XD Daigo's not that good at Guilty Gear, people just give him way too much credit.
This proves that nobody knows crap about fighting games if they're complimenting Umehera Daigo about GUILTY GEAR. I can understand Miyako, I can understand WOSHIGE, but Daigo?
Actually, he wanted to play Ryu in SF3, but he was crap compared to Ken. As for Street Fighter 4, I think that's a horrible game and should stop being played.
Well, I think it's because they're really basic characters to use. I mean, you don't have to do much to work with Sol Badguy. No offense to Ryu, but it's pretty much the same.
shhh dont even type that! who knows if he reads these comments, or better yet, if he has a translator for every language constantly looking for this exact type of comment u just posted so he can conquer yet another game he didnt know about. its too late! wats done is done. now we just wait till his announcement speech to destroy anyone who has skills in mvc2...
Conquered? That's a joke my friend, he's decent at best in Guilty Gear... Don't go around doing what others do and praising Daigo where he shouldn't be praised. He's a good SF player, and that's really it... If he can beat Woshige, I'll be impressed, but till that day, he's just a nobody in Guilty Gear.
@Siberianhusky89 I don't think Daigo is the best, he is just one of the most well known becuase of the Justin/Daigo Sf3 match. I love playing Guilty Gear, but I never followed the Players as I did SF3, and even in SF3, Daigo isn't even in my favorite player, that spot goes to RX
I know, it just kinda upsets me that people give him credit when he doesn't deserve it. I mean, if you look at Street fighter 3, I can understand if people say he's a beast there, but when I look at him in Guilty Gear, I wish people would quit acting like he was one of the best in this game.
@Siberianhusky89 Again dude they give him credit because he is damn good in tons of game and also good in a game that he even don´t play serious like GG.
But he's not that good at Guilty Gear and he use to take it seriously. He stopped after he got destroyed in a few Guilty Gear tournaments be serious Guilty Gear players. Heck, Justin Wong walked into EVO tournaments for KOF11, that doesn't mean he's good at it. I know that may sound illogical, but everyone else there most likely sucked at the game. But when a top player (No names will be mentioned) walked in at the final part, Justin Wong was destroyed very easily (Quite tragic).
All I'm saying is, Daigo's great at Street Fighter... But to call him a beast when he picked up things my friend picked up within a week? That's a bit rude to the other players.
@Siberianhusky89 Well basicly he is in every Capcom game good and thats why most ppl respect or think that he is the best. And its quite impressive to be even top in every SF game or Darkstalkers. Most rly good ppl are only good in theire major game.
That's not necessarily true. Also, Daigo's not really "good" at Guilty Gear, he's alright. Plus, I don't find being good at SF4 impressive, maybe 2 and 3 I can respect. Plus, it's annoying that people praise Capcom so much just because of Street Fighter and think "He's a beast at everything now". Same crap happens with Justin Wong, not to mention that Sol Badguy is a character that's easy enough to get into but he hasn't mastered him at all.
For what? Not being some fanboy who sucks Daigos' dick just cause he's good at Street Fighter? He got his ass whooped in Guilty Gear pretty badly and quit after. What's that tell you?
Why would being good in SFIV not be impressive? It's the most popular fighter not named Smash currently in the competitive scene. That means lots of competition to get through.
I'd understand if winning was like heads or tails but....
I'm sorry, I just personally believe that Street Fighter 4 (original) is a joke for a fighting game. I had high expectations for Street Fighter 4 and none of them were met to the slightest. I mean, it can be popular, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. If that were the case, it would mean McDonalds is good, get what I mean? Plus, many of the people that played are ones that quit the fighting scene. Anyhow, I can accept he's good at SF4, but people give him attention in EVERYTHING.
Of course it doesn't mean SF or McDonalds is good. "good" in this case is subjective. Alot of people like the game it's update. My only point was because SFIV is so popular, there'd be more high level players to struggle through. At least to me, as long as the game isn't a first hit wins game or a flip of the coin game, getting to the top is pretty hefty feat.
But yeah, I can see your frustration of people acting like Daigo was ever anything in GG.
Yeah. I can give him his respect for game's he's actually good at. I'll be honest, I'm just a tad bitter. Also, McDonalds is more objective as far as quality in comparison. SF4's goodness is subjective, but at the same time there is value to be pointed out and a lot of it's attention is it being Street Fighter. I think SF3 is way better than SF4 in every way possible and SF4 is the disgrace of fighting games. Daigo's still good at it though, it upsets me that he enjoys it just cause it's SF.
While I can't say I prefer SFIII (or moreso just 3rd Strike) to SFIV (I have my own qualms with it), I can say it's a shame the entire SFIII series debuted under really bad conditions on top of the things that scared casuals away from it. If it had debuted with SFIV's support, it probably would've done better.
As for Daigo and SFIV, well his favorite character is back to his Hadouken spacing glory he remembers in SFII. And it's a new game after years of 3rd Strike. Can't blame him.
Yeah... Another qualm I have about Japanese players in general (Not all, but most) is that they seem to like picking up top tier characters at time. That's why respect a player like Shiro in SF4, he plays a character that requires actual finesse and time to learn. Heck, I think it's no coincidence that in SSF4, he suddenly wants to play top tier Guile. Why didn't he in SF4 if the game was so balanced? Why choose him NOW? They do the same for most games like KOF and such as well.
Well, that's just the competitive mindset in general. To choose a character that
1. Has as many good tools as possible to achieve victory at high levels
2. That they as a player can take to said high level
They weigh those 2 when they choose a character since what they want is victory. Few will intentionally choose a high learning curve character if said character's tools don't match or surpass a character with a smaller curve unless they aren't all about taking the win.
Well, I just wish they'd admit to it. People keep saying "Oh! He's using this character now!" as if the person is choosing because he actually likes the character. There's liking a character, then there's just liking to win. Heck, many Japanese weren't using K' in some games unless he's like 2002UM K'. Well, anyhow, I'm not saying don't be competitive, I'm saying that people should stop acting like someone cares about a character when they just choose them to win.
Well Daigo does say Ryu is his favorite character.
Overall, I'm sure if someone asked them, they'd be honest and say "they are really good (why they pick them for tournies) and I like their playstyle (why they picked them over another top tier)". As for people assuming for them, idiots will be idiots. Don't let them get you down.
Most fighting games are fairly different and people are treating Daigo like a Guilty Gear God when he doesn't even play the game anymore. He use to take it somewhat seriously, that's why he did well before. Now, he'd just look like a joke in so many ways. Give him credit where it's necessary, that's all I ask. You know?
Listen, watch Miyako's Dizzy or Woshige's Millia. SBO use to take Guilty Gear somewhat seriously, but not as much anymore. It might have tournaments there, but most of the serious GG tournaments aren't held there believe it or not.
i have a new found respect for venom, even though all of these daigo videos, he seems to be winning, i always reckon the challenger puts in a better fight...just my opinion though
Venom takes some serious fucking skill to play at tournament level. Props to Mosaic for putting up an excellent fight. The first match near-comback was phenomenal.
He is not in this or any other realm of imagination, the best SF player. He got friggin owned in the Japanese national tournament for SF4 and didnt even place in the top 8. Plus any SF stalwart knows that he is a great player, but there are several ppl better than him. What u meant was that he is the most popular player... which he arguably is.
actually since we won the Game stop invitational, he technically is the best SF4 player in the world, but I don't really count that, I'm waiting to see who'll come out on top evo this year.
Daigo stopped because he doesn't really have to play competetively anymore. The man's accomplished so much. Now he just plays because he feels like it. He won the last Darkstalkers Combination Cup with only 10 mins of practice.
Wow. i always used to wonder how good me and my friend were when we played this game religiously at gamestop (we used to work there) looking at this, out Sol/Venom fights were just as vicious. I am not saying that i could beatg these guys (they are tried and tested and I have only played locally) but it's nice to see the pros using the same techniques and transitions that I use (I am primarily a Sol player) But I would love to go against Daigo with my Cliff, it would be a great test.
...the fact that you even compare yourself to someone like Daigo and in the same vein vie for challenging him with Cliff, a character that is tourney banned, says more about how out of your league you are than you think.
can't even tell whats going on....

Guilty Gear Series (XX, #Reload and Slash) * Super Battle Opera (2003) - 3rd [Sol] with teammates Arisakashinya [Slayer] and Pachi [Faust]
* Evolution 2003 - 1st [Sol] * Absolution 2004 - 1st [Sol] * Evolution 2004 - 1st [Sol] * Evolution 2006 - 2nd [Sol] with teammates RF [Faust] and Kindevu [Eddie]
