This sounds very strange, to have to retrieve your data from the drive over the net. Most thieves will wipe the drive straight away. Relying on a thief to connect the machine to the net is a very flaky and tenuous thing. Far better to use whole drive encryption like TrueCrypt or Pointsec... the average corporate laptop is worth very little it is the data that needs to be kept out of the hands of thieves.
