It's Italian television show : Sometimes, during these years, they had so many different show to perform in a very short period of time, so they hadn't time to plug and unplug all the stuffs, et asked the artist to play playback. That's the reason why they're doing this.
If you look at them, they look like having lot of fun, maybe it's because they know they are not doing anything rationnal ^^
Good tune. But... why this programs always want to make those guys playing without cables? Unplugged guitars??? It is a little bit embarrassing... I think that's the reason for the laughs in the start of the song. It's very nice to see those brothers in the same stage, isn't it?
I think Mark said before the concert: Well bro, I will do this only one time, but I am not going to playback again with you, because atleast I can play ;). David got so mad that he stole the cables of the guitars.
@ClyderSkyner i know but so what man, thats what little bro's do......don't they, but in this case everybody wins coz we get more early sounding dire straits tracks to listen to.
David's solo at 1:40 is lovely. Kinda like Mark's lead playing, which I know and love from several Dire Straits albums, but ballsier in a way. They're both consummate and inspiring musicians. Wish they'd let bygones be bygones!
I read somewhere that David didn't leave... he was fired by Mark who questioned his commitment and also that he couldn't hack it as a guitarist. David (in interviews) didn't like touring. But, only they know what really happened. While I like David, too, it's quite obvious that they are miles apart when it comes to talent. Mark is simply brilliant!
@adriank9 It's Mel Collins. Dire Straits were in Italy as part of their Alchemy tour - David Knopfler's backing band here are the Straits of 1983, sans Alan Clark and Hal Lindes..
Good on ya, Knopflers! it's hard not to wish that Mark would have surrendered control to David once in a while, thus preventing the latter from leaving Dire Straits!
I'm a fan of DS, but felt sometimes they could use a bit of variety in their repetoire, and I think the younger Knopfler was more than qualified to contribute; Pity...
is a playback and I can tell you three parts of this video which is clear: Look at the minutes 0:35 to 0:38, even hear the saxophone when he, saxophonist tocar.y stops another error is in the minutes 1:46 to 1:48 voice is heard, "yeahehehe, and David is far from distracted by the guitar microphone XD.
another bug I saw in the minute 1:29, David Knopfler away from the microphone, you realize and correct it quickly.
@mrengftw another bug is another guitar, three in total, but does not appear in this video, just sound between the minutes 1:42 to 1:54 and end of the video also
This is on David Knopfler's debut album-- 'Release!' I can't believe mark is actuallly performing with him live here.... i thought they had a 'less than friendly' breakup when dave left dire straits.....
Italian tv always oblige bands to play With play back !! That's what happened to Muse and they really had fun with That !! That's Terry Williams on drums !
Absolutely dig David's voice. Should have made more albums with Mark. Mark's got the guitar (voice) and David's got the voice and look at how well they go together.
No me imaginaba a Mark Knopfler haciendo playback...
Too bad they didn't even plug cables into the guitars,It would have been half way believeable that they were playing the song.....Too bad And Mark is my favorite Guitarist I wouldn't think he would do a cheezy video like that...
My God!!! Up is down, black is white, I've never seen that before, did that really come out in 1984? I thought the brothers were quite estranged by then.
So, this is obviously the band playing to a track.
I understand why they do this but I can't imagine doing it myself. you would have to feel like a total weirdo. I mean Mark is an awesome guitar player and his GUITAR ISNT PLUGGED IN!

Clearly a David's song. It's not bad, but it sounds to me like a cheap copy of Expresso Love.

But omg haha look at 1:30, David forgets he is supposed to sing and rush to the mic. Very funny.
