  • I haven't played for years but stumbled upon this by accident. Both Mr Duthart and myself were taught by the great Jimmy Catherwood... although for me it was many years later in the early eighties at DSMC, Edinburgh.

    maybe I will start again!

  • I hate myself.

  • oh the great mother of god!....

  • Great. I have been playing for 20+ years but this still taught me something! A great player and not as unapproachable as some of the contemporary crowd!

  • Alex truely is too much. This guy has hands. Love it.

  • This is the best explanation of the drag I've ever heard.

And a truly inspiring video--makes me excited to grab my sticks and practice, practice, practice...

  • Thanks a bunch for posting this group of videos. Freakin' awesome. Much appreciated!

  • American drummers (jazz, pop, pipe band etc.) used to say "When we think we know it all ........... we send for Alex Duthart!"

    What a legend and pioneer!

  • These videos of Duthart are the only chance I get to see him play, since he died before I got into pipeband drumming. Please post more!

  • Drags are the hardest movements in drumming to execute properly. Even the top drummers sometimes "flatten" their drags during a solo competition (that is, fail to execute the 'buzz' that Alex is talking about), which I suppose is like a piper missing a doubling or something. This video is tremendous. What a legend. He's The Man!

  • They're doing that on purpose.

  • Fantastic, thanks so much for posting.

  • What a treasure! Thanks for posting.
