For some atheism is a lack of belief that is true-a neutral position However many atheists are anti religion -see "Richard Dawkins atheist call to arms", his passion shows he is not neutral. I think the type of atheism you refer to may be agnosticism-the deity is unknowable-scientific atheism- impossible to prove or disprove. It is not surprising atheism is growing considering the nonsense and violence carried out in the name of religion, including barbaric animal sacrifice.

There is no harm in learning from others, but ultimately we always have to think for ourselves. I believe that atheism is religion in the sense that there is a set belief- an absolute belief-that there is no god, sounds like faith to me. Dawkins appeal is for the intellect, but not very satisfying on other levels.

Dawkins is famous for debating with theists, atheism and theism are both belief systems that have no real connection to science, but Dawkins conflates atheism with science.

Atheism is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities (Wikipedia) and theism belief that at least one deity exists. So they appear as twin ideas very much connected. Science is simply knowledge in the form of "testable" explanations and predictions about the natural world. Testable implies that proof is necessary to be "scientific", therefore atheism being untestable is unscientific.
