In my youth I bought this Renaissance album (and some more...). Up to now these stunning vocal harmonies give me the creeps and put tears in my eyes...
They didn't receive the props they deserved, so I agree that they are the number 1 most under rated 70's band ever. I listened to them since the 70's, but few people I know in my age group today know of them. They were played on FM progressive rock or college radio stations.
@zygodactylexicon I wonder why you would refer to Renaissance as 'underrated.' They received worldwide fame, lots of radio airplay back in the 'album rock' decade of the '70s, toured extensively, sold millions of records, etc. I think they got their rightful acclaim.
Wow! You have no idea what it means to me to find this music here! I haven't heard this song in decades and listening to it now takes me back to a very happy time in my life! A million thanks!
@joyeuse74 Well, John Tout certainly could have made a solo piano album! Don't think he ever did, though. All the Renaissance 'career synposes' I've read state to the effect that 'not much has been heard' from either Tout or Terry Sullivan after they left the band around 1980 or so. Tout sure has some classically-trained skills.
haven't thought of renaissance in years glad for youtube to have so much old classic music content. i think the band went through some musician changes in the 70's. i have all their older albums and no way to play them. classical rock was and still is the best.
Whoa!!!...When Annie's vocals first come in!!!..and then that one harmony at 1:51...a brief spiritual orgasm, for me anyway.....It's no wonder why i've loved this band all along....I once met Annie Haslam at a King Crimson concert back in 84, on New York's westside Pier Six, she just happened to be standing directly behind me. She actually seemed glad that someone finally recognized her. Her "Annie" necklace was a dead giveaway. I was starstruck, lost all my senses..won't ever forget it.
@hubiex My best friend in college and I used to catch them at every opportunity back in '72 -' 74. One time we saw them at a small club in NYC (can't remember which one now) and we sat at a table right under the stage. Heaven! After the show my friend took the plastic cup that Annie had been drinking water from and made it something of a shrine in his dorm room. We referred to it as The Holy Grail.
Incredible song! Thanks for the video. Also, this is one of those rare youtube videos were the comments are intresting and informative, and not the usual internet BS.Thanks everyone!
Okay, for all you Renaissance fans out there:I know a little bit about them, but I am sure not nearly as much as many of you. It seems to me Prologue is their best album. Is that the general consensus or what?
My picks would be Scheherazade and Novella. I think it was finally on those albums that they REALLY began to get the best out of Annie Haslam. Pity that the music changed, as the band themselves put it, and it got over just when they were getting better and better. The title track of Prologue though is incredible for Annie's singing. Put that down as the most insane grand B in the world! Prologue also has more variety than their other albums.
@sdgakatbk : While I agree that Scheherezade and Novella are fine releases, my personal opinion is that they really hit their stride on Ashes are Burning and Turn of the Cards.
Their only downfall, musically speaking, is when they started relying too heavily on synthesized keyboards. Although it was the trend of that era, that's one aspect of the music that didn't hold up so well over time. Other than that: dig in to the back catalog!
@RadioFreeSpike Agree that after Novella ('77), things started going downhill. Other than the use of synths, though, the major weakness of later albums (my opinion, of course) was that Camp started writing the lyrics, and the Dunford/ Thatcher collaborations phased out. Betty Thatcher's lyrics and Mick Dunford's music were the keys to the strong early material.
@sdgakatbk For me, Prologue is the best album, although that's not the general consensus.
The reason I guess is that this is the "only" classic Renaissance album that has electric guitar featured somewhat prominently. And because the song material is a bit more diverse than later period stuff. But Ashes Are Burning and Turn Of The Cards are great albums, too!
I caught a Renaissance concert in a coffeehouse in Philadelphia in 1972. It was an experience I will never forget. Annie Haslam was dressed in red velvet, floor length gown that enhanced her beauty a thousand fold. The sound they produced is second to none.
At about five minutes in, they go into a jam that seriously quotes a classical piece...is it Chopin? Rachmoninoff? I know I've heard that before--anyone know?
Renaissance means revival - Kyiv is undergoing revival following dark and destructive years of Russian and Soviet occupation so lets call this capital by its correct and official name - KYIV
probably the band did not know Kyiv was the correct name for this ancient capital of Ukraine - however it also called Kiev by its Russian and Soviet occupiers even so the Ukrainians still called it Kyiv and officially Kyiv since Ukraine became free and independent of Moscow....cheeers
the band was heavily influenced by the "former Soviet Union" You might want to check out Mother Russia from their Turn of the Cards album...and or live at Carnegie Hall...the latter being the better version on youtube!
In 1972 Kiev was the proper english rendering for the city and had been since the early 19th century, the russian usage of Kiev dated back to the 18th century. It was not until 1995 that the government started using the romanized version of Kiev. The original name of the city itself is uncertain with scholars throwing out different spellings from 16th - 18th century sources. The time frame of this song suggests that Kiev would be the proper use as it was both the official and popular name.
@twainname - Kyiv is the transliteration from Ukrainian language while Kiev is the Russian transliteration and while there exists so many more versions the Ukrainian Govt wisely decided to formalise the Ukrainian version which is now used by all embassies of the world including USA and Russia - the dictionaries , encyclopedias are slow to adjust to new spelling - however Kyiv is not romanised but Kiev arguably is
Yes, exactly what I just said majorgeek. In 1972 the spelling would have been Kiev because the transliteration (or romanisation) would come from Russian. The transliteration Kyiv did not exist until the Ukrainian National transliteration system was completed in 1996. As for this song the popular and scholarly name would have been Kiev as used by Taras Shevchenko, Dr. Edward Burstynsky, Prof. George Shevelov, all major names in the modern Ukrainian language. This song "was" correct in using Kiev.
yes and no - Kyiv is English translation of Ukrainian city from Ukrainian language and did exist even before National transliteration system - Kiev was used because Russian Empire banned and then Soviet repression of Ukrainian language and literature prevented the use of Kyiv
