This is a masterpiece, period! both technically and for the performances. As for a remake I always wondered what they could possibly do with it. it would have to be someone lieke Todd Haynes maybe or michael Haneke..I can see Jude Law in the role of the youngest one, see his performance in "Oscar Wilde" or "The garden of evil" by Eastwood one of his first movies you'll understand. They would have make the audience fogetr about his good look without erasing it totally..

And women can't fathom homosexuality in men, you have to be a hetrosexual male to understand how disgusting they are, and I'm not religious, no axe to grind, it's just abnormal, like lesbians, I would never hurt one but I don't have to go all P.C. either.
This is one of my favorite Hitchcock films, along with The Birds, Psycho, Rear Window, and Foreign Correspondent. There is no cut at 2:04. I was wondering, if someone remade this movie, who would they cast?
You might be right SDSen. I was thinking that if it was remade using actors with more realistic acting styles and a more contemporary screenplay, then it might be just as good or even more riveting. It would also be cool to see how a contemporary director would capture the story.
I kind of agree with SDsen the contemporary feel would sort of ruin it all completely just like they did when they decided to remake another hitchcock Dial M for Murder with Michael douglas...it was an embarrasment to the original ...plus there is something abt the period this film is set in..the ambience the acting esp by John Dall cannot be seen again esp for this film..Stewart could hav improved as he did later on in other films but overall it wud be suicide to attempt it just my view.
have u seen the shitty remake of "psycho"? have u seen shitty brian de palma movies that try to rip from hitchcock? or "roadgames" which tries to be like hitchcock? trust me, if it were remade, especially nowadays, with all the shitty actors+directors around hollywood, it would suck dick big time.
I completely agree....I mean its pathetic enough trying to watch any films these days and then for directors to have the audacity to remake Hitchcock of all directors ..it's so insulting i feel embarrased for the directors
I think the thing at 2:04 is just a few frames that were cut out from being damaged. The real cut is at 2:40 when his black jacket fills the frame. I read that they had to do tricks like this because the film canister of the camera would only last so long.
Yes....you are correct. So they would NOT have cut it at 2:04 knowing another cut was due shortly. So I guess the alteration at 2:04 is just a blemish in filming.
Editors would sometimes use sections from two different takes by combining them in a butt cut hoping it wouldn't be noticed. There's an example of this in 'Virginia Wolf'. If the match between two takes is close enough, they could get away with switching over. Even though this is claimed to be one shot on each camera mag, there might be switches between takes from each mag, hidden in static moments like the one at 2:04.
There appears to be a cut between 2:04 and 2:05, as the grain of the film, the lighting, and the tilt of the camera all seem to shift. And this carries over up to 2:08. Or am I just seeing things?

Yes, Hitchcock cut at 2:40 because when the film was played the projectionist had to change reels. So he disguised it.

You need to start watching at, say, 2:00 to get the full effect of this alledged cut.
