I used to watch this episode!!!!!!! This was the only episode I owned! I watched it dozens of times!!! Then one day, about nine or ten years ago, I watched it once more and went "Well this is total crap." Thus ended my obsession with MLP...until my best friend introduced me to FiM, and the obsession begun once again!!! To be honest, though, it's cool to see this episode again--through the eyes of a teenager! I now realize how crappy it truly was! But still! Memories!!!

@UltimasIsland This is a misconception a lot of people make, that Lauren Faust liked the series and made FiM because of them. She did however like the My Little Pony toys and created her own adventures for them and gave them their own personalities, whereas she had little admiration for the shows as the personalities of the ponies differ very little and they sat around doing nothing.

Well, the personalities that Lauren gave her pony toys were, with most of them, at least partially based on their canonical personalities. That's why for instance both canon Firefly and Laurens version (whom Rainbow Dash is based on) are both daredevils, and why both canon Surprise and Laurens version (whom Pinkie Pie is based on) are both hyperactive pranksters, ect.

And it's not true that the G1 ponies sat around and did nothing. They fought villains in most episodes.

It is so hard not to hear Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy in those two ponies' voices. The spaghetti manes didn't bother me, although I agree with the poor color-matching.

And OH GOD NO NO NO to the "yesyesyes"! I consider Tara Strong to be a good voice actress, so I wonder if the difference between her acting here and in FiM is because of directing or natural improvement. The script here definitely left less room for sounding natural.

The main problem with this special that I see is that instead of introducing the characters naturally, they use the clunky exposition maguffin of the party book to tell the audience who each pony is. Other than that (and the non harmonious colour schemes) it is a fairly simple special.
