I adore the Firth/Ehle version - watched it religiously each Sunday at 9pm with my mum when I was 12 :-) But I do think David Rintoul was also marvellous as the dark, brooding Darcy.
The 1995 is far better than the 2005. Not that Keira was terrible but she was too modern in the way she spoke and acted. Jennifer did a much better job, she was exactly what you expected Elizabeth to be like. As for darcy, Collin also did a better job than matt. He was better looking and played the part better and anyone who says Matthew was the way Austen drew it out clearly is a dumbshit and hasn't read the book seeing the 1995 copied everything WORD FOR WORD
@funkyfranx I believe the 1985 version with David Rintoul as Mr. Darcy to be the best version that I've seen so far. (With apologies to all those who like Colin Firth).
Don't apologize. 1980 is still my favorite. David Rintoul is exactly the way I picture Darcy whenever I read the book. And Elizabeth Garvie isn't nearly as smug and nasty as Jennifer Ehle is.
@funkyfranx I like the 2005 film version but it has its flaws. Matthew seems to be rushing his lines whenever he speaks. The 1995 BBC version is a treasure and highly recommended.
I was supposed to read this in high school. I never did. Just watched the 2005 version and I loved it but still never read the book. It has been, say, four years and I just started to read the book. Almost done but so far its my favorite book Ive ever read. The book is soooo much better than the movies. Anyway, I hearrrtttttt x2 Mr. DARCY!! Ardently!
i loved both versions! the 2005 squeezed in what it could in 2 hours...and did it really well, the cinematography was breathtaking :o. the tv series, was ofc fantastic because you could see the evolution of the characters in each episode. personally i loved Matthew's version of Darcy more than Colins, but thats just a preferance ^^.
@ibrokemybrains I totally agree...even if colin's Darcy could be seen in evolution, and so we can appreciate his change during the movie, matthew's one (for me) is more fascinating, "dark" and unkind...exactly how,in the book, jane austen draw it....it's obvoiusly only an opinion, but I loved him more than colin's one...
however,I've read for the first time "Pride and prejudice" when I was 7,and now that I'm 24 and I read it something like 8 times I can say that it's one of the best books ever..
the thing is: P&P is a masterpiece, and it's complete in itself (as V Woolf said) and every adaptation they've done, or they're going to do will never be like the book-
'95 was a very good year for P&P fans =) As for the '05 version, I found the kids sitting in the row in front of me playing with their mobile more interesting than the movie. Keira was painful to watch, Darcy seemed thoroughly depressed, Mr. Bennet looked like a serial killer, and the rest of the cast made no impact at all =/
@Minty210 u r funny minty and i agree so much. btw jane looked like a swan and darcy didnt look depressed but suicidal. i had to watch the 2005 version and i suffered!!!!!!!
I've never read the book and came across the story through YouTube, I really liked the 1995, it was interesting, I've seen the trailer of the 2005 but seem more dramatic, I Guess I need to see it and the book in order to make a proper judgement, but is a cool story ;)
I don't get why people compare the 2005 movie with the 1995 version. Shouldn't we compare it with the book. I think that the 2005 movie did wonderful in telling the story with it's time limits. Also Matthew's Darcy was his own interpretation of Darcy. If he had just completely copied Colin Firth then many people would have hated him!! I haven't had the pleasure to watch the series (maybe I will download it) but I saw the 2005 movie and I LOVED it!!
@msinvincible2000 And Jennifer Ehle was too plump //too old/ too detached to play Lizzy better as Keira Knightley did. JE is a very good actress but she does not fit in that role as K.Knightley did.
Wow I love this, I wish they would interview some younger people involved in the works though, I mean, I picked up the book 2 years ago and I was 13. It was basically a replica of high school life, the people are just so very real! And it totally changed my views on the classics.=)
1995 version is way better than the 2005 one!! colin firth doesn't need to talk, he's eyes say it all *-* and the dialogs are textual from the book. seeing the series it's like reading the book again!! <3
I agree, when I saw the 2005 film I wondered if they had ever bothered to read the book at all! Mathew M played Mr Darcy as if he were some kind of numbskull, it was awful... And they actually made Mrs Bennet out to be a sensible and prudent mother! lol
Keira is a wonderful actress & a beautiful woman, but they globbed the makeup on her...bizarre. The 1995 version is amazing- even Jane would approve of it. :)
Mr. Darcy is NOT shy, quite the contrary. He is so arrogant he just won' t be bothered. The creators of the 2005 film should have bothered to read the book at least twice. There are numerous incongruities and Mathew at times appears to be weak.

Darcy is suposed to look arrogant, but it is misunderstood, he's really just shy. Colin just feels really arrogant and doesn't have that tormented and passionate feel as Mathew. Colin looks like a jerk! Mathew you can tell he's boiling mad in love w/ lizzy under all that "facade" Colin sucks!
I absolutely don't agree that Mr. Darcy is shy! He just fell in love with Lizzy and that's why he became less proud and more sensitive. I think Colin F. played this role really believable.
@furangel He is arrogant, not shy, and he states it, and his reasons. Therefore, Mathew's Darcy makes no sense, in anything. I couldn't see love madness in Mathew's acting, but i saw the evolution in Colin's Darcy, in his rendition of the character. His stares towards Lizzie, whenever they're on the same room... There's nothing in Mathew's acting that resembles that, not at all!!!
Apart from the fact that the movie can't tell the story as well as the Tv series, it's impossible, but didn't try.
I clouldn't agree with you more. Try telling the American audience about it. The 2005 version is a complete failure working for the specific audience.
I am glad to hear it. I had a different experience. Can you think of any professional American critic (or newspaper) in the States who didn't sing sonnets to 2005 version? I would love to read his/her review.
Maybe, but you cannot be 100 percent American. You all are descendants of European/African people who sailed in that continent or who were deported there (as slaves or prisoners that was ment to be departed in USA). So, the only 100 percent Americans are the Indians.
Well, ok, but that's completely besides the point. I can't call myself German, or Cherokee, or Russian, or any of the other nationalities that I descended from. I'm United Statsian, but that's not a word, so American it is.
Your ancestors - if you´re not an Indian, which I highly doubt - must have come to USA from Europe in 15, 16 or 17 century. America was discovered by Columbus in 1492, and nobody knew of it before. So guess how your ancestors appeared in USA? They moved there! What a surprise! You don´t even need to know that you had such ancestors. No, and I point in out, NO American has a PURE American roots.
Yes, I know that, and I never said that my ancestors are purely American (I even mentioned the three major ancestors I descended from that I know of). I did not mean it literally when I first said that I'm 100% American. It was just my national pride speaking, not necessarily politically correct or 100% true. I was just trying to make a point; I am a United States citizen, and I prefer the 1995 version over the 2005. I'm very sorry if I offended you or anyone else.
Now you´re talking! :-))) No, you did not offend me. Why shouldyou? Geez, don´t be scared of me. I was just afraid that you would be the type who keeps on sying that she is 100 percent American really without knowing your roots or American history. Now I see you´re not like that, and I find you very agreeable. It is I who should be sorry if I offended you somehow. But thank you for making things clear.
Dios que guapo que es Colin Firth...ya pueden hacer las adaptaciones que quieran que sin duda ésta es la mejor, estoy enamorada de ella, no me canso de verla.
