  • I really don't remember there being any emo kids even in the late '90s. I'm sure there might have been a few around somewhere, but emo was fairly unknown until 2002-03.

I think in it's early years (1985-2001) you really had to be deep into the scene. 2002 on, and it's trendy and mainstream. It was extremely underground then though.

  • Rites of Spring are punk. That's all there is to it.

  • Really people, how gives a rats ass about 'emo'. Rites of Spring were a fucking amazing band, period. Let the music speak for itself.

  • Sorry to double-post, I didn't understand what "pending approval" meant

  • Pfft haha! I wasn't expecting to see a lame "emo" battle on a Rites of Spring video. At no point has that meaningless pseudo-label ever entered my mind whilst rockin old Dischord albums, and I think Guy would agree:

'I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever... honestly, I just thought all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional?' - Picciotto

  • Hah what the eff? I didn't expect to see a lame "emo" argument on this video. At no point while listening to Rites or any such DC indie/hc bands have I ever even thought of that empty and meaningless pseudo-label. And Guy would agree:

"I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever... The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something?" - Picciotto - 2003 interview

  • tienes toda la razon el emo de hoy en dia no se parese en nada a el verdadero emo

el emo poser no se compara con el emo real que decepcion con la gente que ase quedar mala nuestra sociedad!!

  • I kinda recommend disabling comments on these Rites videos - it just ends in very long and very pointless debates about REAL EMO and shit. At least that is what I think! The music should speak for itself, not via a wikipedia article or via some self-righteous journalist. Wuv from meee

  • @charlessale I think they add color to the video and even some historical context, Charles. I like that people still have discussions about music and bands and stuff :)

  • Guy went onto better things after RoS, but this speaks for itself!!!!!

  • guy went on to bigger and better thingsafter this, even though this speaks for itself!

    Awsome.

  • fucking awesome.

  • enough of this "emo" bullshit. Who fucking cares if this is/was "emo"? if it was thats cool, but genres change, look at black sabbath's metal compared to cannibal corpse . All I know is that RoS is a sick washington hardcore/post-hardcore/emo/I don't care band who's album I picked up today. $8 well spent

  • at first sight Guy totally looked like 82-83 henry rollins hahaha, the hair and shit. I love that dude

  • Everyone that embraces 'emo' wants to pull everything they deem cool from the 80s under their umbrella, to claim it as their own. It's best to ignore them and the word itself.

  • That drummer is the shit. Especially when they play For Want of in another video.

  • I think I was there!

  • Haha who cares what genre this is its just fucking great music, genre is irrelevant!

  • when i hear emo i still think of stupid fucking hipsters... but i still respect rites of spring.

  • I think this band is better than todays emo bands!

    -TF on the lain

  • @TheHenrylim why would you even say that?

  • frikken be quiet about emo for gods sake, great band, just sod off already, this band were well before u fat knackers squeezed your beings into tight trousers and waddled around in super clean converese

  • EMO IS FROM THESE PEOPLE IAN AND GUY, they were the first and AT THE DRIVE IN are the 2nd and last, fuok off the rest..

  • EMO IS FROM THESE PEOPLE IAN AND GUY, they were the first and AT THE DRIVE IN are the 2nd and last, fuck off the rest..

  • wtf!!

  • white people's answer to bad brains.

    love both of em

  • What guitar is the lead guitarist using?

  • it is almost certainly a yahama sg. eddie janney was usually seen playing gibson sg's around this time.

  • What guitar is the lead guitarist using?

  • @RHCPPCHRRHCP

    Yamaha SG 2000.

  • oh shut the fuck up,rites of spring dont care about emo or punk they just cared about rockin

  • Is this on a DvD or something? If so, I NEED THIS!

  • why can't i watch a video for a band i like without people arguing over what is emo or not?

just let it go and enjoy the video, guys!

  • this is not emo this is punk. I guess this might have been emo then but today this is just awful. No offense to any one that likes this.

  • @redemption95 You may hate it dude. But you have to at least give them respect, because the Emo music today wouldn't even exist without these guys.

  • if it wasnt for this band there would be no sxe or "emo/ emocore" and the music you listen to today would be shit....SO PAY FUCKING HOMAGE

  • but the music today is shit. rites of spring are awesome.

  • these guys are awesome, not emo!

  • I'm not sure why I got thumbs down for saying that Bring Me the Horizon, Chiodos, and the Devil Wears Prada sucks and that this band is good.

  • you probly got a thumbs down because they are good bands. you may not like them but that doesn't mean there not good.

  • they riped off good charlot

  • i think this was before good charlot

  • you think this was b4 good charlottle? bitch, this was probably b4 u were even born son.

  • @sockcucker23

    nice trolling there

    good charlotte - 1996

    rites of spring - 1984

  • "I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me" Guy Picciotto

  • This shit is terrible...

  • Emoooooo!!!

  • 9:30 in DC?

  • yep good ole 930 club

  • this is definitely emo. This is original emo before all the "scene" kids who shoppe at HotTopic and wear their sisters trousers came by and fucked it all up. Most people nowdays, even those in the "emo" scene have absolutely no idea what emo really is.

  • so truee..

  • i think so, however i prefer the emo music of our day (see i voted good your comment)

  • don't say that word.

  • I have a hard time wrapping my head around this being emo. When I think emo, i thin Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas is the Reason. This sounds like hardcore punk (not bad by any means). How is this emo? Is it just the lyrics?

  • this is real emo. the definition was changed around 2001 i think. this is the band that started emo

  • It's the lyrics, chords, and the vocals. The lyrics are more emotional than regular punk, the chords are more ''loose'', and the vocals can be used in different ways, such as moaning, screaming, slurring the words, etc.

it depends on the band to match the sound. each early emo band has their own style and definition to their music.

  • @Metalcortaku

it's cause hardcore at the time became more and more...simplistic and aggressive. much more macho and repetitive. Rites was about expressing yourself however. how all good punk should be.

  • @jack00008 It does sound like good punk, I'll give you that. But I think the term "emotional hardcore" makes more sense for this band than straight up "emo". But like most genre pioneers and originators, they sound less and less like later incarnations of the genre. That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

  • rites of spring were the first band to be called emo so if anything were emo it would be these guys. sunny day real estate and texas is the reason came later they too are emo bands but just like original punk more modern punk does not sound exactly the same as original punk. the ramones and anti-flag sound very different from one another but they are both punk

  • @griptapesequel puta ka

  • @griptapesequel

RoS not is Emo, RoS is the first Post-Hardcore band, and the emocore is a sub-genre of Post-Harcore ;D, the actually "emo's" SUCKS!

  • @JsfBcn geez, why would you go so far to put music into categories?

  • @JsfBcn lol sarcasm

  • @JsfBcn

rites of spring started the emo genre under the "revolution summer" 1985

    so shut the fuck up

  • @griptapesequel I've been one of the "modern" emo kids for a long time, at least long for me. But I love these guys, I love fugazi, and Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arcadia, and all the older emo and emo-esque bands. It really just depends on whether the person took the time to trace it to its roots before claiming the identity.

  • @griptapesequel people say i look emo and I listen to dis :D

  • no everyone, this is emo. just early non-manufactured-or-influenced-by-blink182 emo.

  • this band according to spin magazine 20 years of alternative music book rite of spring is....punk simple as that the playing style the drums every thing is punk the only thing is the lyrics that talk about self mutalation and the government ..and that is what opened the gates for emotional hardcore bands which led to the emos of today which are gay and dress like girls rites of spring must be disappointed at what they created

  • guy piccoto is the best ever happened to music :)

  • original emo

  • urban dictionary lies..

emo= good bands like chiodos, bring me the horizon, and the devil wears prada

then again emo is just a label.

  • mhm

  • All those bands suck. This is REAL emo.

  • shut the fuck up this argument is so 2002 cliche jesus fuck haven't you fucks had enough of posting on what is and what is not on the internet just to let people know how elite you are?

music is dead, internet ruined it. Life RULES.

  • @thundertower if the internet managed to ruin music for you, you can't possibly have liked it very much to begin with

  • just a post hardcore band

  • Its hardcore! this was one of the first hardcore bands. However they led the way for the popularly called "emo" bands.

  • yeah and I wish they never ever did that. assholes. now everything from fucking your sister to a paper cut is called emo.

  • no they were not one of the first hardcore bands.

  • yeah they were one of the last hardcore bands

  • It's emocore

  • Emo was originally a style of hardcore punk until Sunny Real Estate and Jimmy Eat World fagged it up,

  • This band is EMOTIONAL HARDCORE.

  • it's sounds like what the germs would be like if darby was sober at some point...

  • Wow not emo. This shit is punk.

How the fuck did this turn into my chemical romance

  • my chemical romance is not "emo" please just throw that word out of your head. it's some stupid shit someone made up and it's gotten out of hand.

  • @maimingbetty amen. Even mcr say their not emo :D

  • garage punk

  • Why call it emo? It's as if hardcore isn't emotional!-ian mackaye

  • garage punk shit head

  • its emotive hardcore, not emotional

  • hell yeah! fuck the 3rd wave "mall emo" !!!!!

  • Why is this even 'emo'? It just sounds like post punk. I looked here expecting a horible whiney band, because of the whole 'emo' bullshit thing, but these guys don't sound bad. I'll check out some of their other stuff. The sound is slightly reminicent of the Pixies.... if they have songs as experimental as the Pixies, then they just might have a new fan. We'll see.

  • the term 'emo' is and will always be very controversal.

this is actually emo, but "the first wave of emo". but mostly called post-hardcore, because that term includes all kinds of genres which emerged of the former hardcore punk. like screamo, grindcore, what everrrrrr.

  • emo is essentially a form of post-punk

  • Emo is such a nebulous term. Guy Picciotto doesn't even really know what it means.

  • post-punk wouldent sound like this. if it was post punk id sound like that fuckin david bowie or some shit

  • these guys are considerd the first ever "emo" band. (but that is only for their lyircs, nit like my chem romance and that shit) it fits better under the cantegiry emotive hardcore...heaps of bands at the time were singing about drinking beer and watching tv and stuff, and guys ike ian mckye wrote lyrics that were deep and personal.

check wikipedia out on like ian mckye, these guy...its a gold mine! ahaha

  • oh yeah and they aren't called emo for the music people call them emo because of their lyrics

  • the only real genres are bands you like and bands you don't like, so stop pissin' on about what these guys should be labeled, because for me, rites of spring are a band i like

  • AWESOME BAND. This is balls out rock and roll. Guy's vocals suck but it doensn't matter. These motherfuckers were hungry.

  • who gives a shit what kind of genre it is. A genre is something that "journalists" give bands to subjugate them. These discussions should be about the content of the music not how we should label/define them - coz that's just petty and fucked up.

  • oh god. can the discussion of what's "emo" stop. please? please.

  • record companies blah blah emo blah blah blah punk is blah blah sell outs are blah blah blah the best is blah blah blah are better blah blah

  • this is the 1st emo band

  • what in the world is this shit?

  • This band is great. The only band with that silly emo tag the rules.

  • 118157 - Aussies are such bitches. stfu

  • Yes YEs! Lets put everything into a little genres and label everything right down to the difference from children's rhymes to sing-a-long songs... just like our number one role model, our government.

EMO, emotionally charged! im not quite sure if i have heard too much music without any emotion behind it, i did think thats was part of music, but maybe its just something created in the last 2 decades...

  • wtf is emo?? is it a genre of music??? i'm a total rock n roll fan n i jus came across someone talkin bout emo...

    whats with it?

  • its little fagets in pik skinny jeans crying 2 the likes of mcr & making real rockers metal heads punks grungers & whatever else kinda rockish people look bad!

  • man, you're stupid.

  • if they knew then what they would be accredited for now....they would have punched you in the face.

  • everyone shut the fuck up about emo its so fucking irelevant

  • emo emo emo. lol

  • well said

  • Everyone shut the fuck up about Emo noone cares about it its nothing and its irelevant

  • first emo band ever.

  • Wow .. FascistFashion .. there are the first emo band in Washington D.C 1971 ... there are emo !!!!

  • EMO is indeed a genre that ORIGINATED from Hardcore punk. Now Rites Of Spring may not of ben emo, they sure as hell had a big influence on it.

  • i still prefer moss icon

  • I need enlightenment please

  • el primer disco Emo xD

    taba bueno! xD

  • fucking nice band!

  • i love today's emo, but not fake emo like red jumpsuit and fallout, i like old glassjaw, emo underoath, sunny day real estate, taking back sunday, the used, embrace, and off course, rites of spring.=) hope this guys have never broken up. such a waste of pure talent.

  • nah half of them went on to create fugazi, so they definitely didnt waste that pure talent

  • tbs and the used are not emo, they are pop punk. Also, even though rites of spring broke up, guy formed a band that was real emo known as "fugazi".

  • there is no emo. emo was/is a word used by people who were not part of the scene/movement. NONE of the bands from the 80's-90's called themselves emo. The bullshit commericial hardcore/punk bands today don't even call themselves emo. emo is a clothing/ hardye/magazine marketing device.

  • thank you. what the fuk is emo. punk is punk. Does anyone know what punk is anymore? Its not dying your hair blue, or lookin weird. Its not walkin around wiht a skateboard lookin like your gonna cause "trouble". Punk is a standard of living. I am Punk and I make close to 6 figures a year and I take down shit from the inside. Its not about your look, its about being pissed off and doin sometin about it.

  • right right, sure.. stealing the company stapler or giving your boss the finger underneath your briefcase at a board meeting.. that's really "sticking it to the man".. *rolls eyes*

  • you dumb motherfucker...

yes is emo which is suppose to be emocore that was the style...and rites of spring was the first emocore band after the post puck era...

  • actually Piccioto was one of the last members to join Fugazi.

  • none of those bands are emo.

  • true emo jaja

  • All those emo kids at Hot Topic need to know about Rites of Spring!

  • how about we ask hot topic yo market rites of spring stuff? hahaha

  • They've collectively shit themselves.

  • They probably don't know good REAL emo bands. Damn, I'm longing back to the days of this music.

  • My favorite song with Rites of Spring :)

  • i'd get down with guy picciotto. what a fox.

  • I wish emo was still badass as all hell like it was back in the day. Here's what we need to do gentlemen, kidnap all the songwriters for emo bands and make them listen to Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, etc. and then tell them to write a song. Hopefully their already uber-emo will clash with the hardcore we've pummeled into them and create good emo like Rites of Spring.

  • that is probably the most genius thing i have read

...well besides my friends idea of a time machine powered by a cat and a slice of buttered toast

  • so rad

  • emo or not, this band's pretty damn good.

  • Shit!!!! = Emo!!!!!!!!!!!\

  • i like this :)

  • Guy Piccioto is one of the best punk frontmen ever. He's right up there with Joe Strummer, HR of the Bad Brains, Joey Ramone, and Ian Mackeye.

  • And Jello Biafra of course ;)

  • yeahh pure emo (L)

    back in the days (L)

  • fugazi>RoS

  • swt i just know this is the earlier emo band in 1985.. u ppl type emo at wikipedia n see the info...

  • If all emo now would be like this, I wouldn't hate emo's so much XD

  • the real thing

    forefathers

  • What could I do I have learned sometimes a need can run too deep and we throw away the things we most wanted to keep and inside we lie over and over again This Time If you don't now you'd better learn to believe me when I say I'm going to build a wall around this town Around these hearts and hands.

    awesome lyrics

  • proper emo

  • Was reading today what Emo means, and have been looking some of the Bands which were to be the early emo bands. What I found: Punk bands. My friends in Spain are anarchists and play just punk and this, fugazi and other groups sound like PUNK. Conclusion: Emo doesn't exist. It must be just another selling-making-money-thing. I won't be researching/reading again from Emo anymore.

  • This is the true form of emo. Today's emo kind of just stole the name. And you essentially are right. When Emo first sprung up it was a subgenre of hardcore punk.

  • Yeah, modern "emo" bands are just pop rock

  • not even pop rock, or at its best poprock. More boyband music than anything else

  • hmm, how about more hardcore ones like alesana and many early saosin and some glassjaw? i wont call them pop rock, its emo and i like it as this

  • whoot whoot alesana!

  • i love tyhis band, why did you guys thumbs down me?

  • Alesana is absolute crap, early Saosin is ok and Glassjaw rocks anyday.

  • WTF!!!

  • agreed. GJ's first album is the best, early saosing stuff was good (with their first singer) and alesana is just gay boring commercialised crap.

  • translating the name is like one of the best cds :)

  • Some people need to get over the fact that emo has changed from what it was then and what it was now.

  • yeah. no.

emo is hard to find nowadays.

however, it is very easy to find an mtvemo band anywhere.

  • noo, the emo didnt came from this, was a modern creation, but this is no bad...

  • idiot..... you know nothing about music :|

  • i cant even understand whatever hes saying.

    I prefer emo nowadays :s

  • lol. your music taste SUCKS then.

  • emo nowadays is crap...ROS is incomparable to what scene kids know.

  • emo is sau schwul.. scheis auf euer englisch ich kann das nicht ihr seits sau schwul xD

  • now this is what you call music!!

    love you guys!!

  • damn emo es the fucking ugly son between goth and punk... this sucks... funckin' panda lovers (panda is a emo mexican band)any way

    emo=comercial

    emo=gay

    emo=girl

    emo=suck my...

  • Oh piss off you Cradle Of Filth loving cretin. Besides, Rites Of Spring have nothing in common with what is considered "Emo" these days. I just consider them a Hardcore Punk band, and a very good/unique one at that.
