@BigEfosho FYI Ford actually made a V4 just thought you'd need to know that since you own one (a ford). It was called the Ford Taunus engine, and it was indeed a V4. They are also very common on motorcycles as well. Though to clarify I do not condone what the other guy claimed simply wish to inform others that though what he said was also incorrect that a V4 engine indeed does exist.

a) you don't know that it was a good car to start with. It very well may have been headed to the jy otherwise. If I was going to do mod like this I'd look for a car with a bad engine to start with.
b) the guy is trying to drive American to the greatest extent possible. the big three never put a decent diesel in a car, and a massive truck isn't always practical.
c) 1970 and later in production for more than five years = fair game
The OM617 is a great engine. For a fox body it's a good choice IMO. Add a turbo out of a Unimog and adjust the ALDA and that Fox body would be seriously quick. Plus a powerstroke or cummins would probably be too heavy for that car.

*Rolls eyes* Yes, Adding a bigger Turbo does lag the torque more but... If you chip or remap the ECU first then add the bigger turbo in after this shouldn't happen. So long as you chip or remap the ECU before adding a bigger turbo in. Provided you add the right amount of Bhp to the ECU the spooling time from the bigger turbo won't have an affect on your usual performance. My turbo used to pick up @ 2000 RPM when it was 150Bhp but now picks up @ 1700 RPM & its at 200Bhp

The OM617 is Fuel injected. Fuel injection usually requires an engine management. The only system that doesn't require an engine management is carburettor jets. Petrol engines were fed fuel years ago by carburettor jets & they used to backfire. Diesel was always usually fuel injected. Hence why Diesel smoked but didn't backfire. Diesels have an engine management & that means you can adjust them to gain extra torque. Adding more fuel to the engine means the Turbo will spin earlier.
Clearly you lack basic understanding of how engines work.
ALL diesels are fuel injected. Does that mean the ones used by Mercedes in the 1930's had a computer? How about the fuel injected gas engines in the 1950's-1970s? Not a single one of them had a computer.

For someone who is supposed to be the lord of knowledge on Mercedes engines, if you knew anything about the OM617, you would know that its not made out of chocolate, So what do you mean it won't live long? It should, its a Mercedes engine not a Ford engine. My 2.3 4-pot Merc engine had oil constantly burning through it at one stage & it never skipped a beat after! Why do you think the OM617 got picked for a veggie fuel conversion? Its almost indestructible.

WVO coating on compression rings = Replace or clean the compression rings!!! WVO won't kill it as long as you clean/replace the rings. Its no more difficult to replace/clean rings than it is to replace a head gasket. They only sit in the grooves in the cylinder head its no big deal!

Makes sense. OM617.952 will outlive a 5.0, 3.0 or the 2.3. Makes more torque than a 3.0 - almost as much as a stock 5.0. and has a redline of 5800. Think of this: A stock Mercedes Turbo Diesel sedan weighs about 3800/3900 lbs. A stock 5.0 weighs 3100..The Mercedes gets 30 mpg whilst turning 3,000 rpm @ 70mph (based on a 2.88 rear gear). Not even a lousy 2.3L can get that mileage out of a 3000 lb car...Increase the fueling and increase the boost and you can make ok torque...

The Volvo D-5 is a 2.4L 5-Cyl C-rail Turbo/Diesel which pumps out 160Bhp, 340Nms & 50+ MPG! Putting a rattly 29MPG 3.0 with less than 100Bhp is a very bad image for a muscle car! A D-5 powerplant may have solved that minor problem! change the engine, its never too late!!!

An OM617 will not get 29mpg, it has 120hp (not "less than" 100hp, it can make 145hp with the turn of 1 screw and a Fox body mustang is FAR from anything resembling a muscle car!

a) you don't know that it was a good car to start with. It very well may have been headed to the jy otherwise. If I was going to do mod like this I'd look for a car with a bad engine to start with.
b) the guy is trying to drive American to the greatest extent possible. the big three never put a decent diesel in a car, and a massive truck isn't always practical.
c) 1970 and later in production for more than five years = fair game

The OM617 is a great engine. For a fox body it's a good choice IMO. Add a turbo out of a Unimog and adjust the ALDA and that Fox body would be seriously quick. Plus a powerstroke or cummins would probably be too heavy for that car.

Please read again: Bigger turbo.
A bigger turbo spools slower which moves the torque curve up in RPM. You may be faster in the top end but drivability on the street will suck.
More than 12psi is a waste, the injection pump will not add more fuel (power), it just heats the air and restricts the exhaust.
More power = more fuel. Unless you turn up the pump, more boost is useless.

*Rolls eyes* Yes, Adding a bigger Turbo does lag the torque more but... If you chip or remap the ECU first then add the bigger turbo in after this shouldn't happen. So long as you chip or remap the ECU before adding a bigger turbo in. Provided you add the right amount of Bhp to the ECU the spooling time from the bigger turbo won't have an affect on your usual performance. My turbo used to pick up @ 2000 RPM when it was 150Bhp but now picks up @ 1700 RPM & its at 200Bhp

Listen mate. The Seat Leon looks nothing like a Golf. The only VW wannabe's were The Seat Ibiza/Cordoba, they were exactly the same looking as a VW Polo. I bought it because I didn't want a Golf because it looks like a fucking ugly bumblebee. By the way incase you read some European road reviews about its understeer I thought I would mention it understeers only because its got 17/18" wheels on it whereas a fat bumblebee GT TDi has dull 16" wheels on it. Once you swap the stock 16" GTi wheels for 17"s & 18"s on a fat bumblebee it understeers like fuck! VW can't even give you front fogs & 17" wheels on a Golf GT TDi! The only sportiest things a GT TDi has is the engine & a tiny rear spoiler about the same size as your penis. ha ha

The OM617 is Fuel injected. Fuel injection usually requires an engine management. The only system that doesn't require an engine management is carburettor jets. Petrol engines were fed fuel years ago by carburettor jets & they used to backfire. Diesel was always usually fuel injected. Hence why Diesel smoked but didn't backfire. Diesels have an engine management & that means you can adjust them to gain extra torque. Adding more fuel to the engine means the Turbo will spin earlier.

I've lost some compression but my W126 still starts easily in the cold and I still expect to get a clean 250-300k miles. My father's W123 has seen NO ill effects.

For someone who is supposed to be the lord of knowledge on Mercedes engines, if you knew anything about the OM617, you would know that its not made out of chocolate, So what do you mean it won't live long? It should, its a Mercedes engine not a Ford engine. My 2.3 4-pot Merc engine had oil constantly burning through it at one stage & it never skipped a beat after! Why do you think the OM617 got picked for a veggie fuel conversion? Its almost indestructible.

WVO coating on compression rings = Replace or clean the compression rings!!! WVO won't kill it as long as you clean/replace the rings. Its no more difficult to replace/clean rings than it is to replace a head gasket. They only sit in the grooves in the cylinder head its no big deal!

Makes sense. OM617.952 will outlive a 5.0, 3.0 or the 2.3. Makes more torque than a 3.0 - almost as much as a stock 5.0. and has a redline of 5800. Think of this: A stock Mercedes Turbo Diesel sedan weighs about 3800/3900 lbs. A stock 5.0 weighs 3100..The Mercedes gets 30 mpg whilst turning 3,000 rpm @ 70mph (based on a 2.88 rear gear). Not even a lousy 2.3L can get that mileage out of a 3000 lb car...Increase the fueling and increase the boost and you can make ok torque...

dans a very silly boy! he should have put a Volvo D-5 engine in it as its a mustang and it would have made it a lot-lot quicker than the 300SD!
The Volvo D-5 is a 2.4L 5-Cyl C-rail Turbo/Diesel which pumps out 160Bhp, 340Nms & 50+ MPG! Putting a rattly 29MPG 3.0 with less than 100Bhp is a very bad image for a muscle car! A D-5 powerplant may have solved that minor problem! change the engine, its never too late!!!

An OM617 will not get 29mpg, it has 120hp (not "less than" 100hp, it can make 145hp with the turn of 1 screw and a Fox body mustang is FAR from anything resembling a muscle car!
