It's actually a beginner's thing I believe. I use the lights to help let me know if I hit a wrong note, so I can practice working out my mistakes. Sometimes you can't hear the mistakes, but you can definitely see it light up.

I've been playing for about 10 years, though I never took lessons. Really, for the last ten years anytime I heard a song that I wanted to play, I would figure it out and get it to a decent level of playability. Drums, on the other hand, I have taken lessons.
