this is possibly the best album art i have ever seen, the art along with the song (especially the intro) makes me want to just merge into the picture and live in a world of hardcore black and white scenery such as this.
@EliteBeast It's the lick being the cause for this. A lot of the early melodic death scene was pretty heavily inspired by the black metal movement of course, since it was the big thing then when MDM was still in its infancy.
@LeaTelamon Weren't black metal bands in conflict with the swedish melodic death metal scene ?
I've read this on wikipedia, and it seemed interesting, but on the other hand, it's wikipedia ...
And as for influences, I don't think it was influenced by black metal, it sounded very much alike, but in 1990 black metal was a new thing and this might be a version of ''death metal '' that DT tried. This new experiment with death metal is the reason why mdm appeared !
@AllSummerBlog Yes, the old school bands. I've studied both movements rather extensively and Dark Tranquillity is never mentioned as a band that would have been a part of the conflict in any way. You can hardly argue that this death metal is old school.
@LeaTelamon Well first death metal band was Napalm Death ( it's not grindcore, it is even mentioned as death metal ), then Chuck Schuldiner's Death in 1982 !
Dark Tranquility came just 7 years later !
Judging by the date, it is an oldschool death metal band ... with some scandinavian influences !
@AllSummerBlog No, then you are completely misunderstanding what I mean with old school Swedish death metal. Check out bands like Dismember and Entombed. This is what I am talking about.
@igordz Some of the growls are Mikael Stanne :) Mikael actually does a lot of backing vocals on the early DT albums, sometimes its the bad production making it harder to hear the differences. Its quite clear on songs such as A Bolt of Blazing Gold off the Skydancer album!
this and the other tracks from their demos are the unspoken classics of Dark Tranquillity. and now I have them all on the new compilation Yesterworlds...awesome!

@derf2themax How about mystic nightscape woods ?
With witches and penumbral creatures stalking at every fallen tree trunk !

this cover art isn't even similar to their usual style, which tells me this album is really old, a shame i can't find it on limewire

Isn't Moonclad Reflection the most awesome name you ever heard ?

Whenever I listen to Moonclad or Skydancer, I get goosebumps !
The magic of these early albums is haunting ...

this takes me back before metal segregation and label over-simplification of black metal , death metal, grind metal , etc,,

The DT demos are excellent. Like Skydancer it sounds a bit strange at first but then it gets better for every listening.
