an explanation to my joke for those too dimwitted to understand. so i ask you, why clap? the answer is because you enjoy the music so much that you want to be involved. if an artist starts clapping, it usually means that they feel like the audience is losing interest and they want a more enthusiastic atmosphere. if an artist playing a solo wanted someone to keep time, they would have the band back them up. without backup, the artist is free to change time signatures and overlap grooves at will.
