If you ever listen to Bennett's interview on YouTube, you'll find a reference to an informal, "unspoken" policy that even if they were sure who the mystery guest was, they'd go around the panel once. Here we see, in Arlene's refusal to "guess" who it was, the closest they come to explicitly mentioning that policy.
@trevoc2...Edith Piaf's secretary worked for the French Underground. When they went to entertain the French Prisoners, they took photographs ostensibly to give to their relatives. The photos were used to create false papers which they took back to the prisoners to use to escape...over 250 did so. She also smuggled some out of Germany by passing them off as her musicians. She provided finance for both her Jewish friends and the prisoners families. You should check your facts before accusing.
@trevoc2...Edith Piaf was Not a collaborator: at the hearings after the war she was cleared and also congradulated on her work with the French Underground in helping French Prisoners to escape, hid many of her Jewish friends, and paid for at least one ship to take them to safety out of the south. She also continued to sing songs written by her Jewish friends despite the German law and warnings and was banned from working for several months because of that but came back to sing them again.
It was very charming how the panel extended their wrong answers so that he might grace the stage longer. This is what great showmanship and kindness means .

@weightfeather1 I see what you mean. Yes I understand what you mean. Like it's a Small world after all ;). and as mentioned before. You have to love Chevalier.
@weightfeather1 Not to be rude but how does that make the word "smaller" now? I may be young but I understand the sensation because I research these kinds of things, I hope to be proficient in everything. So could you explain some more, I earnestly want to understand where your coming from.I don't see how that makes the world smaller? Do you mean as in no sensation as big as it used to be?
He looks good for 77; he still has his hair and it's also a good haircut.
Still, he was of a working-class background, much of which he clung to; he was intelligent but not an intellectual as was the Sorbonne-educated, bookworm, Charles Boyer.
@phyzzique Vous le dites .... qu'est-ce qui est 'cela' ? ? ? Sont vous la référence au Chevalier ? Je sais qu'il était antisémite, mais ne savait pas qu'il était un Nazi.
You say 'IT' ....what is 'it'??? Are you referring to Chevalier? I know he was anti-Semitic, but didn't know he was a Nazi.
Mr. Chevalier seems like a very, very, very nice man. But somehow his appearances on What's my line were so easy to guess. Maybe he's so popular that one can't miss?
@weightfeather1 He wasn't sick. He just lost weight. Arlene mentioned in her biography that he was always trying to improve his body image and whenever he was on What's my Line he seemed to ask the question, at least it seems to me, would it improve him physically in anyway. Personally I always thought he looked very handsome with a little meat on him, lol.
The nerve of Bennett Cerf to refer to John Daly as old. He was 16 years older than him, and only 10 years younger than Maurice Chevalier.
You know how old Maurice Chevalier was? He was born when Jack the Ripper was ... well, ripping. The murders positively attributed to Jack the Ripper occurred between August 31 and November 9, 1888, and Maurice Chevalier was born on September 12, 1888. It doesn't mean a damn thing; I'm just sayin'.
How sad and kind of eerie, in retrospect, that John Daly says, "I just hope that when I'm 77, I have your spirit, etc." Well, he made it to 77 on February 20, 1991, but died only four days later, of a heart attack.
As Martin Gabel said, he wouldn't be 77 for another five months, but his one-man show was called "Maurice Chevalier at 77," for some reason.
People often make the comment on these clips, "How did they guess so fast?" The mystery guest, 9 times out of 10, just came on to plug something, so the panel immediately thought of shows or movies that had just opened. "M. C. at 77" had opened just three days earlier!
I wish they had different panelists on the show more often. It could have been so much more enjoyable if the panel didn't study the society pages and memorize who was going to be in town! The fun of the show was trying to GUESS from questions/answers who the guest was. Very disappointing when the guest was found out after barely one turn around the panel. Arlene was always one to keep the game going. Not so w/ Kilgallen
And what a dapper handsome gentleman Mr. Chevalier was!
I was 17 in Paris at the Moulin Rouge right after Mr. Chevalier passed away and I can't remember 2 days ago but I will never forget that night - the warm reception they had for the impersonator who came out in tribute to this great gentle giant of talented man. Lovely...
Chevalier's questionable conduct during WWII followed him for the remainder of his career. He was accused of cozying up to the Nazi puppet government in occupied France. He also took part in several communist demonstrations and was banned from entering the US before he did the one man show referred to here.
April 1965: a few months before her untimely death, Dorothy Kilgallen found herself hospitalized for complications involving a broken collarbone. The official story was that she slipped on a throw rug. She missed five weeks of broadcasts and two videotaping sessions. (I am actually old enough to remember this, though in memory, she seemed to be missing for a longer period.)
"official story" meaning there were other unofficial ones? You know so much, i think you should write your own WML book (published by Randomhouse of course)!

the irony, my friend, is that in today's world 77 is relatively young whereas Chevalier looked much older than 77 then and someone so active as Daly flaming out at 77. Capiche?
bigred997--Your opinions are your own, of course, but I doubt that people who are 77 years old consider themselves to be relatively young, and it surprises me that you think Chevalier looks much older than 77 in this appearance on What's My Line. I think he looks terrific, an opinion that is shared by a couple of other people in this forum. Opinions aside, I wasn't aware that John Daly was "so active". and I find no evidence of it in any biographical information on the Internet.
@karlakor He was 77 at this point? I agree with you that he looked VERY GOOD for 77 years of age. His skin was very smooth and still had some elasticity.
