  • i love gnome ;)

  • gnome made something complete new, and gets bashed for it! Gnome shell looks awesome and works quite fast. I have so much fun working with it.. i never was so efficiency!

Gnome! I love you for doing this step! <3

Written from Fedora 16, Gnome Shell 3.4, ChromiumBrowser with Gnome 3 Theme.. :P

  • wie heißt das lied?

  • Gnome 3.0 shell and the Ubuntu Unity desktop feel like linux jumps back to the NES Nintendo days! Windows and Mac being the PS3/Xbox360. I switched home and office computers to Linux after the Ubuntu 8.04 Lts release. Who said Compiz does nothing? Are you insane? Not only did the desktop effects package speed up office production, after everybody started using the eye candy they all ended up install Linux on home computers. If Unity and this Gnome are the future Android is the last hope

  • Can anyone tell why they always choose german names/expressions?

  • I used both, and I honestly think KDE is damn good especially in terms of giving more options and stuff, but it's simply crappy, it's fucking slow (I have ATI with fglrx), and it's buggy (real buggy)

like for example, when I enable blur effect, GIMP and other painting programs become very slow (really), and also the Expo and minimize effect are broken, I mean WTF !

yeah I know fglrx might be the cause, but come on, I'm talking about ATI, millions of ppl use it !

  • thank god they improved upon this original crappy layout. haha

  • how's the song called? :)

  • @spastattack sorry for that late answer...

the song is called "These Days" from "Robin Grey"

    Robin Grey - These Days

    cheers;)

  • @SamDeRe81, and one more thing to straighten out. No one said that you will not be able to use Gnome 3.0 with compiz. It's just you can use only one window manager at a time. That means you still have an option to keep things as they are. It's like complaining that you won't be able to use compiz with metacity. Me, for instance, will stay with metacity since it's a reliable wm, with a lot of potential and simplicity. Compiz in my opinion is not stable, and Gnome-shell has to prove itself.

  • I disagree with you. Compiz is not used by most gnome users, and definitely is rarely used in production environments. Linux is whatever you make it to be. It was actually a successfully deployed desktop back in 90's. I strongly believe that compiz is not a well designed product. It adds nothing to productivity. I would never, ever dare to run it in any serious uses. Gnome-shell is a step in a right direction, since it has a potential to be more stable, productive, and appealing than compiz.

  • @cabrioleur That's funny, because if Linux didn't have compiz I wouldn't even use any Linux distribution ... Linux for me is just a cheap toy that I use when I have nothing better to do... Windows 7 run all the software I need... compiz is the best thing that is exclusive to Linux... I mean Linux has Gimp big deal you can get Gimp for Windows... Almost all software in Linux you can get for Windows , and it works better in Windows because in the example with Gimp Windows support all Pen Tablets.

  • @maw88ify, I do not understand the goal of your comment. If you consider Linux a cheap toy, I would like to point that it's free, not cheap. Compiz is not Linux only, therefore it is not a feature of it, as it is just another software on top of operating system. It is very easy to check compatibility of equipment before you buy it (you don't buy everything on the shelf at the same time, do you?). Finally, where and why did you come out with Windows, troll? Why not pink underwear of Ms. Spears?

  • @cabrioleur I had my Pen Tablet before I started using Linux not the other way around ... Yes it's a cheap toy , because unlike you I paid money for my Linux cd's I always order a lot of them plus I buy the Linux magazines ... I give all the cd's I buy away as gift... So I help pay for your "free Linux distributions" unlike you that just takes everything for free, and doesn't give back to the community ... and I'll say it again compiz is the best software that is exclusive Linux.

  • @maw88ify, you don't know my involvement in community, and since you had your pen tablet before you started using Linux, I assume you have short experience in this field. I thank you for supporting various distributions. You are right, last time I bought a Linux distribution was few years back, and since then I did not pay for any. Giving to community is not necessarily giving money to distributions. Compiz is not exclusive to Linux (*BSD, OpenSolaris etc.). CD is medium, Linux is a product.

  • @cabrioleur Ya I have used PC-BSD, and OpenSolaris I didn't like them. according to compiz web site "Compiz Fusion is software for the Linux desktop" it may work on BSD, but it was made for Linux desktop. So you just pointed out that Compiz not exclusive to Linux this means there is no point in using Linux is there? My point is simple Mac has "Final Cut pro" , and Windows has 3DS Max, and tons of exclusive games / software. Linux has what ? The really cool thing about Linux is customization.

  • @maw88ify, according to compiz _fusion_, as most testing is done on Linux. It is an opensource project, and a lot of developers use different platforms, and is as functional on them as in Linux. Your DM/WM makes bigger difference. "Furthermore, do not install Compiz Fusion on important production machines, such as servers, business workstations or other systems where uptime is crucial;" only proves the point that compiz fusion shouldn't be used in productive environments.

  • @cabrioleur There you go you said it "production machines", and "productive environments" ... I'm talking about as a home user, and not as a business OS... As a main stream home user OS Linux provides not much more than entertainment, and what most home users want is customization on their desktop, or there isn't much other need for Linux for home user...

  • @maw88ify, friend, read the comment of mine that started this discussion. There is no word about entertainment computer, but workstation/production (that's where majority of Gnome is). I did not look for another DM/WM, even if I do like XFce3 (1/2 not so much), and I don't know when I mentioned resources consumption (did I?). Most people using Linux work/study on it. It is not XBox or TiVo. There is Linux, use it as you want, if you want. I don't care how many people use it this way, if they do.

  • @cabrioleur "Most people using Linux work/study on it. It is not XBox or TiVo." You're wrong many people do use Linux as a TiVo it's called Mythbuntu ,plus there is LinuX-gamer, and software like Moovida Media Center, humble indie bundle, SONGBIRD , Ubuntu tweaks, Zsnes Emulator ... and more

Many people that use Linux customize Linux to look like a Mac with the Mac4Lin theme. Just look at all the compiz cube video's on youtube, and tell me that people don't use Linux for entertainment...

  • @maw88ify, many people use it as entertainment box. That is fine. It does not change the fact that most use it professionally or academically, songbird is no longer supported in Linux, and still, most people do not use it as entertainment box. They can, but statistically gross amount of attention and revenue comes from businesses, not home amateurs. Beside, you are doing a mighty fine job explaining why people use Linux regardless of Compiz :-)

  • @cabrioleur It's clear to me that you are the troll and not me. It's also clear that no matter how many times I prove you wrong in true troll fashion you will not admit you are wrong. I have shown you that Linux is used for entertainment , and that compiz + Mac4Lin theme part of that entertainment. I could show you an endless number of spinning cube videos , and theming videos. Yet as any good Troll you wont admit that you are wrong. You dance very well, and know the moves, but still a troll .

  • @maw88ify, friend, mythtv and other "entertainment" software does not rely on compiz in any way. Actually, if you ever browsed through their bug reports, you would noticed that they often (mythtv especially) suffer from bugs in compiz/compiz fusion (they are not the same). This only proves the point that an average user is better off without it, unless he is visually oriented, willing to deal with instability, not productive user = small portion of userbase. Please, don't call me a troll.

  • @cabrioleur I've been using Compiz for three year never turning it off, and I haven't had one problem so explain that ... The only problems I ever have with Linux is all of it's crap audio and video drive problems... it doesn't matter if you have compiz on or off Linux distribution are full of audio and video bug, and don't get me started on Xorg, and all the pulseaudio bugs ...

  • @maw88ify, p.s. not once you proved a flow in my logic. I stated that compiz is not stable and should not be used in productive environment, and most gnome users don't use it (a fact). For which, 2 months later, you said that "it is funny" and Gnome without compiz is not an option for you. I stated my primary opinion in different words. You "prove(d) me wrong" by calling me a troll. BTW, MythTV, not Mythbuntu, and "troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages". Out.

  • @cabrioleur "gnome users don't use it " WRONG I can show you tons of video of gnome users that use Compiz , and the Mac theme as entertainment . I believe that you called me a troll first I could quote you. I never said Mythbuntu used Compiz ... What said was that Linux is used for entertainment, and Compiz is entertainment for many people. "Linux is not XBox or TiVo." Really ? "TiVo Inc., which currently provides the hardware design and Linux-based TiVo software"

  • @maw88ify, I surrender. You are quoting me outside of context "gnome users..." instead of "most gnome users...", and if your knowledge is based on youtube videos, I would say please get involved in community before you take it as an argument. But I agree, you are right. Every word you say. Do not reply to my comment. I lost, you won. Gnome is an entertainment DM, and without compiz there would be no point of using it. A fully agree. Done. Over.

  • @cabrioleur Well that wouldn't be funny now would it ? What I don't understand is why people like you attack Compiz as not being useful... Even Mac users have virtual desktop Space, and Expose, and both are in Linux using Compiz... I mean I can think of other software in Linux that is clearly less useful than compiz productive environment... So why not go, and pick on people that use Frozen-Bubble for example ? How is Frozen-Bubble used in a productive environment ?

  • @maw88ify, I planned on giving up, but you bother me. Compiz doesn't have Scale plugin. Compiz Fusion does, but, as quoted, it should not be used when stability meters (that's what devs said, and proven by many tests). Long before CF there was skippy. VD are from 1989. What CF has to do with them, I don't know. But you seem to know. XFwin has more bells and whistles than metacity, and you pick on me that I (like majority of Gnome users) do not use Compiz/CF. I tried to stop. What's your problem?

  • @maw88ify Expose or Desktop Grid effects were not first brought by Compiz but there were other apps like 3Ddesktop and one other what name I can not remember what offered the expose.

Compiz-Fusion was first what offered lots of effects and with nicer looking way. But not first or not even most stable.

  • @TheFri13 Good bit of history, but I don't think I said Linux was the first to have have Desktop Grid effects ?

What cabrioleur claims is that "virtual desktop" , and Compiz-Fusion is not useful . He also claims that Compiz-Fusion is not the reason for the growing number of new Linux users, and that Compiz should be removed from Linux. However I know that most new Linux users come for the effects .

Switchable desktops were designed and implemented at Xerox just like GUI, and docks...

  • @cabrioleur If you want lightweight you shouldn't be using Gnome , KDE , or Unity ... If you want a plan desktop with no effects just use Xfce.

Xfce aims to be fast and lightweight, while still being some what visually appealing and easy to use. So have no clue why you would you be using something bloated like Gnome , KDE , or Unity when there is clearly other lightweight desktop environments that fit your needs.

  • @maw88ify, I will not get into OS wars with you (what Linux has to offer comparing to *). Everyone has their own reasoning for it, and those who use it know their reasons. Linux is about as customizable as any other UN*X like architecture. Linux has GPLv2 and UNIX based structure - this is a sufficient reasons for great number of businesses and professionals, who find also that software selection and dev fits their needs. Others choose Mac, Windows, BSD, AIX and so on. Compiz is hardly a reason.

  • @SamDeRe81 I don't understand. Gnome-Shell is part of new Gnome, it's just a great new functionality that Gnome.org is working on. Ubuntu utilizes Gnome, so whenever Gnome 3.0 will come out, Ubuntu will have it. And Ubuntu comes out right after Gnome deadlines.

  • Why does my lovely penguin look even more like a mac ;_;

  • @d33eniz Do not mistake GNOME to Linux. Linux (kernel) is just a OS and you can use any wanted UI on it. Was it CLI or GUI. GNOME is used as desktop environment on many other OS's than just Linux. You can choose HURD, FreeBSD, SunOS or any other possible OS for what the GNOME needed softwares are ported.

  • @TheFri13

Id just like to interject for a moment, what you refer to as Linux is, in fact, Gnome plus Linux, or as I've taken to calling it, Gnome\Linux

  • @LordLimecat Gnome/Linux does not mean anything. Please do not misuse the technology and brands. Using "Gnome/Linux" or "GNU/Linux" is like using "WoW/NT" or "Dell/Microsoft Windows". GNOME is GNOME and it has nothing to do with the OS under it.

  • @TheFri13

At the risk of ruining the joke, please google "id like to interject for a moment". Its an old Stallman quote.

  • I'll give Gnome shell a trial run when it is officially released but probably will be switching to XFCE

  • Why does an open source thing need adverts?

  • @Gretgor666, because there is not enough of capital involved in the production of most products. Every product needs adverts. Firefox usage skyrocketed only after 1.0 version was advertised in NYT. IBM, back in the days, had Linux TV ads, but they didn't hit the target since the target couldn't learn what Linux is in 30 seconds. Now they concentrate on ads for professionals, and education of Linux for masses. If you don't know about it, you don't care about it :-) It applies to others, ie GNOME.

  • i love gnome 2.30!!!

  • It looks cool but i never use multiple desktops and i think i can forget to run this on my netbook. Don't really see the advantages from the old gnome...

  • Wie heist der Song in dem Video?

  • @metal666anarchist

Das Lied ist von Robin Grey und heißt "These days".

  • Nice new features. Cool ;)

  • How did you get the taskbar?

  • @DracoJesi They don't have the taskbar in the current alpha.

  • How did you get the taskbar?

  • I'm dissapointed...

  • i don't like :S

  • It's a good prctice to write the characteristics of the performimg PC

  • gnome 3.0 represents another way of doing things, but until it's proven that it's better then why force it upon users?

  • (off topic) Jacque Fresco- Search for Venus Project & Zeitgeist Movement! Beyond Poverty, Politics, Crime & War. A world w/out Money, is it even possible? Stop the Greed w/in the Government ! (Links are in my page!!) Act Now before it's to late !!!

  • no more music. fucking talk to us.

  • Whats that song?

  • @Mraeddaem1

    Robin Grey - These days

  • It looks pretty smooth. Which graphics card and drivers are you using?

  • I loved GNOME 2.0 but this doesn't look fun, it's simply way too much stuff going on. All the screen pumping just for opening an application, will give me headaches.

  • @Alanarion As I see it they added a lot of features for visualizing virtual desktops. If you don't like to use virtual desktops, then I think (or hope) that you can ignore much of this video.

  • @anotherelvis That's the problem I see. You have to use the Activities menu to open apps etc.. it's integral for the interaction. Everytime you use that, your screen pumps to a smaller size, just to open something. In my opinion the user interface should only animate the portions of the UI, that needs interaction and therefore user attention. This is overboard, hectic, disturbing and not giving me the impression of being "in control" of whats going on. It will scare the average user.

  • @Alanarion I see your point, but I haven't really worked with the gnome-shell yet, so I cannot tell if I agree with you. But I do hope that they allow me to configure the gnome-shell to have a minimal amount of animations.

  • Another futile attempt to reinvent the desktop metaphor. And why the shitty music?

  • @coljackdripperofburp Couldn't be more agree. After all it's just a desktop, i want it fast, integrated and not resource-hungry. I like the way it is now and i don't understand this change (try to compete with KDE or 7? the hell with those!), i don't think ill ever use this "shell".

  • Wo gibts das zum downloaden? Synaptic?

  • @larsmacher The followings works in Debian, and it may also work in Ubuntu. First write "apt-get install gnome-shell" to install it. Then open a terminal to write "gnome-shell --replace", to try out gnome-shell.

  • kde 4.4 ftw !!!

  • Hey

Sehr schön und unterschiedlich! Und die Musik ist genial =)

    Tschüss

  • I think if gnome is going to be revamped then so is compiz and maybe even kde. I wish I could just have the kde panel and plasmas but everything else be the current gnome setup. wiat a minute...its linux! I probably can! lol and I liked kubuntu's kde more than other distros for looks but as far as functionality kubuntu is crap so linux mint it is =)

  • Kubuntu 10.04 actually looks pretty awesome.

  • Good lord! If this is GNOME 3, I'm switching to Fluxbox!

  • i kinda like the look of it but seems to be a crap load of submenus can't wait to experience it to see if i like it or not

  • Seems interested. I am very much a gnome user. They have totally revamped the interface.

  • I've been trialling the pre-release version of Gnome Shell and I must say it is very annoying that it cannot be used with Compiz! I don't mind the new concept (I think it improves on the old panels), but I must say that it is terrible that it does not have the same functionality as Compiz AND it stops me from being able to add it. :-(

  • @daeld1

God forbid you can't have spinning cubez

  • @daeld1 i think after time, when gnome 3 is installed by default, you will be able to use compiz. I even think it's possible to use them both NOW, but not sure how :/

  • kde+ gnome that would be good in my opinion kde look gnome stability

  • @gehax OMG i've always thought the same, someone should totally work that

  • G3 new age :)

  • DarkGhost19

    thank you :)

  • hmm i think gnome shell is less usable for my thinkpad...

  • Really ???? this is the best u got?

well seems like gnome will die soon, KDE is just awsome, 4.0 and 4.1 were unusable, 4.2 was ok, 4.3 is almoust perfect, lets wait a week to see how 4.4 looks like, im guessing it wont be much diferent

@alex cmon compiz on KDE 4 why? slow? maybe is that shitty ubuntu that u are using, if u moved to a mans distro u would love kde

  • I'm sure that isn't the best its got, I think these are previews to let developers know what to expect in gnome 3 to make changes or additions like zeitgeist integration, but your obviously a kde fan so don't get why other people like gnome better i like where gnome going i mean if gnome was just to go the same way as kde whats the point in having it opensource = options = free to choose what best suits you.

  • But i agree with KDE in kubuntu sucks xD, only times i was able to use kde for a while was in opensuse don't think its a "mans" distro but was awesome. but I still prefer gnome and i guess "kiddy" ubuntu.

  • well KDE 4 is still soooooooo unstable. i only have to say Activities.... and i dont want to miss Compiz, cause it really makes the workflow better

  • As evidence does not KDE? KDE IS STABLE! KDE 4.4 SC is ESTABLEEE , test it and see. KDE is going to do what once was, but now VERRRY NICEE

  • LOL... I AM using ubuntu with KDE 4.4 and Gnome, and i still prefer Gnome cause its much more stable. KDE has a fucked up perfomance too (lagging expose, lagging desktop cube, etc.)

  • OMG, KDE is stable, not entirely clear stable (come on, nothing is) I think Gnome has lagged far behind, they try to settle with Shell Gnome, but I do not think that is one of my favorite (and not only me I believe that)...

as, to you it can happen, like other not, is KDE, is the hardware:), did the damn bad Drivers?

  • KDE SC 4.4 is stable and very nice to use, and it doesn't need Compiz, Kwin is very nice and preferable over Compiz for KDE users.

  • @Keruaran

On not so fast graphics cards the kde effects always lagg horribly.

The compiz effects on the other hand work very smoothly on a intel gma 945

  • @chrisxy123 I have an old 6600 KDE is fine on.

  • @kakita123

kde 4.4 is as slow as usual (unless you have more than 2.5 ghz or a dualcore) and buggy as usual. Plasma crashed 4 times in one hour I was testing it. PLASMA IS THE FRIGGIN CORE EVERYONE USES ALL THE TIME. AFTER 4 MAJOR RELEASES IT SHOULD NOT SEGFAULT ALL THE TIME

  • why update build unlucky KDE??? why gnome is a standard?

  • that music is very cool

  • Found it: Robin Grey - These Days

  • thank you :)

  • Looks really complicated but once I figure it out i think it will be very useful!

  • KDE 4.4 is the slowest and most unstable shit i have ever seen (just look at the activities or compiz support...)

  • Alex - I type this from KDE 4.4 RC1.

No. It is not slow. Try again.

  • The official release of KDE SC 4.4 has been excellent and only gets better. And most KDE users could not give a fig about Compiz anymore. If you're using KDE, Kwin is better.

  • @RenegadeXS

ja! ist, was ich da so sehe, ziemlicher Mist

all das was ich an gnome so schätze ist nicht vorhanden!

  • GNOME-Shell is written in JavaScript and read by SpiderMonkey

Why the hell did they dont uses V8, its about the double speed faster!!!

GNOME 3.0 is just unuseless. Only 1 Panel that is no real panel at all.

I stil hope that GNOME-Shell is just a bad joke.

KDE 4.4 goes faster and faster and Qt 4.6 is much faster than 4.5 too

GNOME goes slower and slower from version to version :'(

very sad, i think im going to switch to KDE finally

  • very good nice

  • very good gnome 3.0 :)

  • nice.

  • I tested GNOME-Shell under Archlinux and Gentoo =)

works fine and looks nice =) but i think everybody can see that its not finished yet but GNOME 3.0 comes in one year so they have enough time

  • compiz also likes to break my apps and make them flash black and generally fail completely.

Please see SideFX Houdini + compiz

will this break houdini too? ....probably

  • well do we want to complicate gnome so much?? do we

  • thanks for sharing!

for testing (on production machine) will I just install (and remove!) gnome-shell and mutter via synaptic or will it break something? How did you add those text captions into the video?

  • Comment removed

  • And it will crash like Plasma in KDE till GNOME 3.4 :)

  • Actually no it will just be slow..

  • @TheKotelok

GNOME-Shell is still a heavy in developement release and is more stable than Plasma and GNOME 3.0 comes in Oct/Nov 2010 so they have still a year more =)

GNOME wont make this again, and especially not again after KDE made it

  • when gnome 3 comes out, totally ditching mac osx for main.

  • @cobbweb remember the KDE4 mess! KDE4 need 2 yrs to become useable. I'll keep my Mac for a while...

  • is it possible to run compiz under gnome shell / mutter?

  • Gnome-Shell has 3d capabilities built in. Sort of like it's integrated with compiz.

  • A very limited compiz though. Compiz has so much actual window management capabilities hidden under the glitter.

  • No. gnome-shell is a window manager, and mutter is a window manager. You can only have one at a time. Sorry.

  • There is currently development to get compiz to fork into gnome-shell but it is not complete but then again neither is gnome-shell.

  • nice

    mas util que nunca

aunque siempre a sido mas util que windows

  • Interessante Ideen, hoffentlich werden sie gut und nicht "overkilled" umgesetzt, wie bei KDE ...

  • loved the presentation clean and clear, much

better than what i have seen yet

  • The song is These Days by Robin Grey

  • Hi, Great presentation and great song! May i kindly ask who`s singing it?

    Thank You.

  • :) Hi, I`ve found the answer. It was "obvious".

....never mind.Sometimes you have to look carefully... Bye

  • Ja. Aber es muss noch einiges verbessert werden. :)

  • Well, realy, what tha song's name? It seems to bee cool

  • wie heißt das lied?

  • Comment removed

  • was ist das für ein lied?

  • Chacun à son goût ;-)

  • du tust mir leid..
