The tower end of the island is the north end, and clocktower the south, as I just learned (as I hadn't noticed it previously) in the Epilogue to the Book of Atrus, in the first part of this LP. I'm glad I noticed it now, because I've always wondered about the orientation of Myst Island, and I never noticed the mention of it in the Epilogue when I read the book.
@Tonin41992 I suppose that YouTube's suggestion algorithm takes into account what videos people visit after this one. It must have noticed that many people were searching for that video after watching this one.
Maybe you did it later, but I'm surprised you didn't comment on the terribly arbitrary puzzle they introduced with the letter to Catherine. What was Atrus supposed to be thinking, that no one who finds the note other than Catherine would be able to count all of the Marker Switches? Maybe he never thought anyone but Catherine would see the note, but then why not say the number outright?
@Antifides Because that's simply how Atrus operates. There's a spoof fanfic script of Myst IV, where the Stranger can talk, and discusses the odd points of the game with Yeesha's necklace. When first coming upon the rotating bridge in Tomahna at night, he says something like:
Stranger: What is this? Why aren't there just two bridges, so you don't have to keep moving it?
Also, Dilandau, thank you sooo much for telling us to look up QI. I'm totally hooked on the show, and have nearly finished Season 5 now! It's amazing!
@LeonardMeltsner Per TV Tropes: A Hand Wave (also memetically called "Scotch Tape") is any flimsy explanation - particularly involving the backstory, a retcon, or a use of phlebotinum - which is noteworthy for its lack of detail or coherence.
@Antifides Ok, we know that the north end is the mountain end, as Atrus states that he is by the library looking towards the forest, and that he is looking southwards. Therefore, the forest is the south end, and mountain is the north end. Is that less flimsy?

@thedragonb0y Because if you can guess the right pattern, you don't have to play the rest of the game. They wanted to make sure that no one in their right mind would just try all of them. And as tekhiun said, they probably generated them automatically.
The game brings back oh so many happy memories, My sister&I bought Myst when it was new, the game was supposed take a long time to beat, but with the help of a friend we beat in near record time.
Do you usually do two let's plays at a time? I know KQ4 is almost over but aren't you starting KQ5 soon after? Also what video did you say to search for?
