  • @loki1200 im kind of confused with the big meter in the hardware interface panel. I may be doing it right but im unsure. can you help me out?

  • Nise man, sic tune

  • very informative thanks

  • amazing tutorial! thanks so much

  • Nice tutorial very helpfull.. thanks man!!

  • Never mind that last comment i got it

  • Can you Create the Mclass in the Main Mixer? not sure if thats what you did but it looks like it

  • Reason is such a toy for mastering, in my opinion, I would use the limiter ONLY and use ProTools for all the dynamic effects. Reason is GREAT for general music production though, just that the compressors, EQ's and stereo imagers are very inaccurate.

  • 10 Q

  • really liked the tune... good info too ;)

  • yo loki, what happens if one mixer is going past the red when you master it??? just shitty quality or?

  • @MISTERXAVIERMUSIC Its too loud. Turn it down :D

  • @RHenry92 yes obviously haha .Im saying how will the outcome of the track sound after mastering if one mixer is a tiny bit over the red.

  • @MISTERXAVIERMUSIC Oh right:P Well then I would say its distorting a bit and might cut out certain frequencies on other tracks possibly leaving your track sounding a bit shitter than what it should:P Or something, im not an expert haha.

  • @RHenry92 haha oooh okayy, yeah thats what i was thinking too, maybe just distort it a little but. just seems to me that i have to turn everything back down just to get that one mixer not past the peak. it sucks but i guess ya gotta do what ya gotta do eh hah. thanks alot bro !

  • its about time you got on a label..

  • OOPS! You left your LOW CUT ON. I suggest that for bass and dance music you low cut everything but your sub synth and/or your kick drum. You will regret low cutting your whole mix. 30hz is right where a human cant hear it, but even headphones are capable of pushing below this. This is the bass you FEEL, not hear. Awesome tute btw. thx.

  • great vid bud ,, awsum jam aswel that crazy dnb gets me amped!!!:)

  • ALways appriciate this type of videos but the white font was a terrible idea. I've 20/20 vision and struggle to see what it says. At one point it shifts over and you have it against a white background ie the sequencer....thanks for the thought though

  • This is an awsome video tutorial. I recommend that if u redo it, or make another one you make text more readable though.

Are you still mastering your music with Reason, or are you using something else. I was going to try out the Izotope Ozone 4 demo, but it's a plug in, and I don't believe Reason supports plug-ins.

  • Thank you this video was super helpful..i always had a problem with mastering an mixing my music

  • wow very excited to get this down

  • I layer 3 or 4 of every instrument in reason and play around with the eqs and bring them rights up and its still sounding really weak and lacks any punch, help! lol. Its like 0db in Reason is way less than 0db in FL Studio. I can use the same drum samples in FL studio and I dont need to layer them up to achieve some guts to the tune. I like reason too much to give up on it yet.

  • PLEASE DO A NEUROFUNK tutorial!!!! YOUR SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!

  • @romelloWilliams11 fail... watched this like 2 weeks ago ... then listne to loki's track on neurofunk... some one said he used reason so i looked up loki reason tutorial.. found a bunch. then i see this was and was like THAT WAS THE DUDE!!!

  • thx alot.. this is very helpful.. i know evrything sbout it.. now im learning the fundamentals of it

  • HHAAXXXXXXX!!!

    >:O

  • how do i use reason? as in i want to master a song i created from cubase and its in WAV format, how do i get on with it using reason? Could you aid me? thanks

  • just set my cpu usage to none...and it works! loki you are a lifesaver! cheers :)

  • this is a very handful tutorial. the only prob i sometimes have is that when i playback a few of my tunes to master, i get a message that says my computer is too slow so it's extremely difficult to master when i can only listen to certain bits at a time. very frustrating :( cheers 4 the tutorial

  • @heatphaze In your preferences menu, try setting your CPU usage limit to 'none'

In the audio tab of the preferences, look to see what sample rate you're running at. If it's at 48,000, it might be that your computer can't quite handle it. Try turning it down to 44,100- this will affect the sound quality a bit so you have to weigh it up...

  • @loki1200

cool, thanks dude, i will try that out. excellent tune by the way :)

  • @loki1200 44100 is CD quality so it will still sound relatively clear

  • @heatphaze been there with ma old buggy computer. Get rid of everything your not using in your reason file inc lanes in the sequencer. all the shit thats just sitting there is taking suprisingly much cpu

  • loki ur awesome

  • Nice video..Thanks ;)

  • nice one mate

  • Great video, and not one word said.lol

  • cool, vid!

Isn't it better to use multi band compression instead so you can compress it a bit more without getting that "squashed" effect too much?

  • I HATE MASTERING!!!!

  • "more vocals todd"

  • YOUR VIDEO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

  • This is by far one of the best Reason mastering tutorial on Youtube. I use this mastering technique on some of my Hip-Hop instrumentals.

  • NIce, straight foward tutorial. Thanks =)

  • this is just a simple quesiton but I can't find any answers: how do you get the devices and track lanes in different windows, so i dont have to drag the track lane thing down to edit the devices and vice versa. It would give me more space also, thanks.

  • @itzcoolbeans There's button just above the scroll bar on the top right which separates the rack from the sequencer.

  • @itzcoolbeans if you're using reason 5, ctrl+1 goes from the arrange window to the rack, ctrl+2 goes from the rack to the arrange window, and once you're in the rack, ctrl+1 gives you the default split. i don't know if this applies for reason 4 or not, but all these details are in the manual that you install with the program

  • thank you so much

  • Between yours and Daves tutorials, I've been getting much better results with my music. :9

You need a mic so you can just tell us what you're doing, though.

  • SO HELPFUL! Thank you so much, my track sounds 99999x's better!

  • thanks alot man, i'll give it a try right away.. great video, finally one i can learn from......

  • Would you say its best to leave mastering to the end of the production process? or should I get into a habit of mastering as I go?

  • wow loki, i can't believe how much this is helping me out. you kick ass.

anywhere i can drop you a track i just mastered?

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial.

  • Great tutorial man. I have been looking everywhere for a good reason mastering video and I finally found one. Thank you so much

  • Why is reason so quiet compared to other programs? I can't seem to get any loudness and punch out of it without pushing it too far and getting distortion lol. This is compared to tracks I buy and even my bro who uses FL has loud punchy tunes. How do I get it loud enough so that at least I could see the waveform propperly in my cdj 1000s?

  • @deejaystatue That's a good fuckin question friend, one I been asking myself recently; wtf does Reason sound generally low, and sometimes muddy. I love this program, I swear, but the quality sucks ass. I followed this vid, then I followed another tutorial online, and found a way to bring up the volume/punch; BUT...it doesnt sound as clean and loud as tracks from FL Studio. Thinking about dl'ing the demo and givin FL a try, I don't like how my tracks sound in Reason by comparison.

  • @deejaystatue i thought i was the only one having that problem

  • @deejaystatue Get Adobe Audition and throw your WAV in edit mode and normalize it, job done.

  • @flokid11 Nah Ive got it sussed now man, I use soundforge with Ozone 4 to master my tunes. I do normalize first in Soundforge to take out any high peaks which allows to push it further in Ozone.

  • Sick tune!

  • nice work mate thanks

  • nice vid and info. Keep it going with the tutorials

  • You're the man. I've gone through all my reason songs and rerouted/mastered everything... Holy shit i got to pay attention the fundamentals. I've been doing this stuff with fl for 4 years without and Mastering know-how which is pretty shameful!

    Happy doof doof!

  • good stuff man!!!!

  • hahahahhahaha mastering in reason? U SIRUS?

  • @TommyNegeal its not the tools, its how you use them

  • @dafishmode That applies up to a point. You probably haven't heard good gear/software have you? You'd understand what I'm talking about if you have. I'm not even talking about the superiority of hardware to software etc, I'm just saying Reason's plugs are just not transparent and sensitive enough to be used for a proper mastering job. Besides, mastering in the same room through the same monitoring system is completely futile. You need objective ears in a properly treated room.

  • @TommyNegeal Well then get outa here hater

  • sick tune

  • thanks for clearing some things up :)

  • really good, tell me, have you figured out all this by your self or have you gone to school or something?

  • wow very helpful i think its the first time i watch an entire tutorial on something thanks alot!!!!!!!!

  • excellent video , real pro advice

  • that was very helpful tutorial!

  • Superb Tutorial!

  • Can someone please help. When the kick drops in my track the claps volume increases then decreases when the kick comes back in. What am I doing wrong?

  • Thats whats up this is goodmoney

  • thanks widdler

  • where you can download the song?

    This is damn good

  • A tutorial of how to make the track would be nice :)

Do you use samples or do you use instruments to get this?

    VC

  • It's a good vid for some quick and easy mastering without paying $60 to get it done professionally. But man, you really need to mention that this process changes between genres. Lol some poor twat may be using these techniques on his experimental ambient song and wondering why it's starting to sound a like a dirty dance track. (like me in March a year ago! lol jk)

  • when i render my track it sounds good but then the drums come in and everything else gets quieter. its really annoying. u have any idea why? thanks in advance.

  • @BrianDumontTV It sounds to me like your drums might be a bit loud, so when they come in they hit the limiter 'ceiling' but push everything out of the way at the same time. It could also mean there is too much low end in your drums. Bass frequencies have more energy and so take up more space in the spectrum. Try taking some of the very low end out of your drums- should free up space for the other parts.

  • @loki1200 I'm not a professional in any sense but would it possibly work if he turned the crossover frequency on his stereo imager down, so that it seperates the bandwidths?

  • @loki1200 hi , there are no problem if your bar in the top of reason is in the red ? there are too much dB no ? I start Reason :)

  • @BrianDumontTV It's because of the compressor. The level of the drums is high compared to everything else, and it activates the compressor, making everything too quiet. You need to use a stereo imager to split the signal into two bands: a low band (containing drums and bass, etc) and a high band. Next you add a compressor for each band.

There is a tutorial on Propellerheads' Youtube channel, here: youtube.com/user/propellerheadsw?blend=7&ob=4#p/c/80A587134198A5E9/38/cvroplTrAwA

  • At 4:20ish, you mention that you don't really want more than 6 dbs of gain reduction, yet your compressor threshold is somewhere around -13 dbs. What do you mean by that?

  • @phadamblab

    Ah... Good question.

The threshold might be at -13db, but the ratio is not very high, so the peaks above -13db are only being reduced by around 6db (see gain reduction lights just to the right of the ratio knob)

  • This is great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and experience.

But my main query is, you with the stereo imaging, you said to put it in mono. I done this and when I played back, it played back in mono. i.e. through one speaker? what am I doin wrong??

  • how did you get your devices in a separate window then your track lanes??

  • @irolltreesup just below the minimise, maximise, close buttons on top right of window separates the sequencer and rack into two windows.

  • FUCKING A MAZE ING!!!

    great tutorial and amazing song!

went back to my project after watching this and i cried a lil :P

    You sell your music? xx

  • fucking wicked track !

    did you sell it ?

  • song was tight. sound like fast and the furious when they racing cars or somethin

  • Thanks I really appreciate this.

  • OMG This helped soooo much... Thank you....

    Nice track btw.

  • You can also use rewire if you have logic and master it in there- Logic has a little bit better mastering stuff than reason does.

  • awesome dude,thanks!!

  • Have you ever experimented using a multi-band compressor before the mastering suite? Theoretically, it should allow one to make the apparent loudness of the bass and treble as big as possible without causing unwanted ducking or wobbling.

Not that Inaudulum isn't loud enough already ;).

  • I heard it's possible to upload any song in Reason 4 and separate tracks into master tracks, how can I do it? Like example : Metallica's enter sandman in 4 different tracks, guitar track only, drums track only, bass track only and vocal track only, how we do that? Please reply, thanks in advance.

  • @Necrommancer not possible lol. you'd have to have metallica's .wav files from their studio

  • to all that say reason sucks:

    suck on loki's nuts XD

  • Awesome video loki. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this stuff for free. You truly rock :)

  • very helpfull again thanks

  • thanks great explanation!

  • Thanks man! Mastering has been the bane of my existence until now haha!

  • Yo all that stuff in tha back i dont have it wat do i do?

  • thx man, very helpfull

  • This is a very good tutorial man thanks!!!

  • Niceee man

    Some really good stuff there

  • niice one fella, thats helped alot.this is all i need to know to finally finish my tunes

  • Thanks :-) Very helpfull

  • what sort of volume should i use for my beat and melody? becuase i cant seem to get it right, either my drums are too loud and my melody too quiet or vice versa. cheers

  • @bboycrazypat92 The best thing to do is listen to it loud until you're happy with the level of both, then turn the volume right down and listen to them quietly. Then turn it up and listen from another room, or the hallway. Find a happy medium between the drums and melody.

  • mr. burns says "eexelent"

  • wow wow wow

thank you very much...ive a question that i been wondering about...can two separate racks be conected to each other?

  • @divadro102 Not within Reason. If your soundcard has more a left and right output, you could send one rack out of 1&2 and the other out of 3&4, then combine them in something else. That's a bit fiddly though...

  • @loki1200 oh ok, i get it now. do you happen to know how to do hardstyle? like getting the kick and the bass together?

  • just throw on some compression, and a screamer and there you go..

  • Learned alot, But I get too lazy...

  • Live 8 has much better mastering tools than Reason 4's combi. I'd advise folks to rewire Reason into Live, cut out any mixer and combi patch and run your instrument directly into hardware and give each a track in Live, flat with no effects. Then record and master in Live.

  • Excellent tutorial!!! Much Thanks :)

    I LEARN ALOT!!

  • What's a good thing I can use to get rid of hiss? For instance, the 'A New Blade' synth. Love it, tweaked it.. and I want more envelope but it gives me this horrible hiss back.

  • Hey man, great tutorial. I make beats in reason (Orcestrated / Hiphop lots of strings). Is the theory the same to any type of music or just D&B?

  • how to set the aux ? and what is it for? i really confuse

  • i learn from you

  • Thank You Very much, may God bless you real good, You have no idea

how much You have helped me to Improve my music thanks again.

  • great tutorial, thank you!

  • FUCK Yea!!! MOTHERFUCKER!@!!

  • Hey, is there anything you don't know!?! thanks for the advise after sorting the settings you told me it's running like clock-work! If I was confronted by 3 armed militants and I only had a toothpick I'd mail you for advise on how to defeat them! And you'd know how!!! I've posted a response to this video of my tune I've only been using reason since October so bear with me I'll get better!

    Thanx again Loki :)

  • Magic cheers Loki, can you give me any tips if I send you a track to hear?

  • SOS loki my computer is saying it's too slow to play song! What do I do I've turned the sample rate up to 48,000 but it's still doing so, which is obviously impossible to master! Got any advise?

  • Turning the sample rate up uses more memory. Leave the sample rate at 44,100 (don't go lower than this). Turn the buffer size right up. Choose 'None' as your CPU usage limit and see how that goes. Try closing programs that you don't need running in the background. If still having trouble, restart computer. Reason seems to run smoother after a restart than after being on Standby. There are a few more things you can do to speed things up, so send me an email if you're still having trouble.

  • @DJVice85 get more ram for your computer

  • u r a great help bro 4 real.. M.R.

  • so i don't understand.. at "stereo imager" normal or hi band mus be set?

  • @77Karolis77

    NORMAL.

If you set on high band, you'll only hear the frequencies above the crossover knob. On low band, you'll only hear those below.

  • ah thanks man.

  • Awesome tutorial, mate!

    THX a lot!

  • I like your videos, sick music too

  • good advice, cheers

  • Wow that a very good beat

  • nice one that helped me alot

  • that tune is sick

  • One of the most useful reason tut's out there!

  • how did u get reason 4 to fit full screen ?

  • Just below the Close/minimise/maximise buttons (at top right), are two more by the scroll bar. One minimises the sequencer window, the other detaches it from the rack. You can then full screen the sequencer window.

  • this helped soooo much man thanks

  • Thanks alot man!!

Normally i would just turn some buttons but now im actually starting to know what im doing.

    keep up the good work!

    peace

  • GREAT WORK..thx alot

  • thanks a lot! and good track!

  • Much respect to you mate, this video helped boost my sounds.Cheers!

  • cheers mate, my tunes r good, but my mastering is shit, i was way off to what u were doing, cheers

  • haha

  • Very helpful, sir. Thank you very much.

  • excellent my friend. got any advice on techno mixing?

  • Excellent advice here, thanks for posting this,, i alwaays over cook my stuff, and mastering is a minefield,, thanks again

  • Wow, you keep amazing me with these tutorials :)

I'd like to take a minute to remind you all, that when you open a mastering tool, even the default has some pre-settings in the combinator. You might want to check them out, as well as the routing... just in case. I prefer to start putting the mastering suite together from the scratch.

And as it was mentioned during this video, mastering is VERY careful process. To maximize the quality, make sure your instruments sound good even with a raw mix.

  • siiiick track..

    nice requiem remix

  • hey man thanx for looking out!

    i really appriciated the advice!

  • didnt learn shit

all i learned was to use mastering

  • Did you watch the whole thing...? :/

  • aw im sorry man, you made me feel bad didnt mean to be rude um i know a little bit of mastering it does make your beat or louder but im not that pro like you im not a beginer nor a pro im seem to ;be in the middle thats why i didnt understand but thanx for the advice! keep it up
  • No problem. The best way to understand how it all works is to play with each unit in the mastering combinator. Push each one to its extreme to understand how it's effecting the sound. then you'll beter understand what needs doing to get the best out of the tune you're mastering. Hope that helps..

  • thanx that really helped alot!

    I understood you more better

  • yeah..get urself good speakers...look for some simple rules u should learn about mastering (dont overdo the bass or highs etc) on the net and then give it a try...i´m not a pro 2..i do the most simply by ear..sounds like shit...but it works..2nd i do is burn the hell out of my cd writer and check it on different systems...

  • Yes, and very clear, thanks a lot!

  • Greetings, great tunes loki! I have only one question, when you export your songs, do you use 16 bit - 44.1khz, 24 bit, or you prefer rewire? some people tell me is better to rewire to a another DAW.

  • If you want to master in Reason and put on a CD straight away, (what I normally do), you need to export at 44.1/16bit and Dither.

I don't think there's much point in re-wiring to master a tune. You're better off exporting the tune at the quality you mixed it at, (24bit 48k works nicely for me) with no mastering plugins or dithering. Then import the stereo file into the other DAW to master, bounce/export and dither (to 16bit 44.1).
