The local indie station (WYEP in Pittsburgh) has been playing the "Ghost on the Canvas" Glen Campbell album. So I started doing a little research on some old Campbell hits and discovered "Gentle on My MInd" was a Johnny Hartford song. Wow. Going to see Glen at Kent OH in January. Steam Powered Aero-Plane was one our favorite albums in college ...
Why do the great ones not grow old? Can you imagine the results of another twenty years with this gentle soul upon the earth? Oh the songs we'd be tapping our toes to! RIP John.
His song writing is so profound and beautifully whimsical. I wish I had been around while he was still alive and performing. These videos will just have to do.
Notice his masterful use of his foot tapping - the drum track for this song. He had a board on the floor that had a microphone to pick it up. Great stuff.
this looks like it was his defining moment...too bad it was wasted on a bunch of bored kids. This is my favorite video of John and this song....a perfect marriage
Whoa....there is a huge "disco' sign behind John as he performs. Hey...nice to get a venue, no matter where. John had a huge career that was all over the place, both in terms of geography and popularity.
john hartford...... it is so sad that generations of Justin Bieber Rihanna brainwashed kids will never know true music... John Hartford you are missed..
Nice melody and all that, but listening to the words carefully, isn't it insulting to a woman to be "in the backroads / By the rivers of my memory" while the man flirts around with and leaves other women? Which self-respecting woman would only ask to exist "gentle on the mind" of such a man?
@fedela100 Sometimes love just doesn't work out between two people. I think this is more a song that acknowledges how deeply his life was touched by that special woman; even though they cannot be together (for whatever reason) he will never forget her, and she will always be a part of who he is.
Hartford is the solid which devoted to Earl Scruggs. He usually use the instrument which tuned up slightly low, plays the unique phrase with a unique roll. Anyone can judge that it is him if hear 4 bars of the beginning that he plays.
His performance-style is considerably unique among much bluegrass banjoists.
As I join my sons for my 61st birthday...I will ask them, who is my most favorite artists ever??? They will spew out names and still miss the mark. And then I will expose them to a name that is unfamiliar to them. As they do some searches on their own, they will find this very talented river boat captain who has a catalog of songs that seems to be never ending. And they will see that he has passed. And archive video is all we can watch of his genious. Still, they will carry on his music. G/B/J.
John's singular love for bluegrass, his timeless lyrics 'Gentle On My Mind', his lonely, cancer accompanied death, his legacy, his lasting companionship. What else does someone need to do to show HOW TO DO LIFE?
what is this from? the quality is really excellent. and of course, a great performance by john, softshoeing and all. i wish i had been lucky enough to see him perform live. he even performed in maine on my birthday. i mean, it was my fifth birthday and everything, but he was my favorite at the time. still is way up there on a pedestal of bowler hats and steamboats.
Love this man's music. It's a shame I didn't discover his stuff until he was near death.

Move over Glen. John always had the best recording of this one (which makes sense since he wrote it).

You will get the pages of Matt Marriott,
who incidentally was the first to explain why the illuminati murdered Elvis (attention: not a joke).
