When it comes to Linux, there will always be nay-sayers. Some of them will be people who have never used (or seen) Linux before.
My argument would go as follows: a $3 burger better taste 3 times better than a $1 burger. If this is true, then Windows costing $200 better be INFINITELY better than $0 (free) Linux. I can guarantee, it's not.
They ALL have advantages/disadvantages! none of them are the best. windows 7 is really nice best one so far in my opinion, the newest ubuntu is hard to configure my graphics card but Linux Mint works it fine ;P and Mac is for simplicity (basically everything is click and go) and the best looking mac in my opinion was the imac g4 (swivel screen and looked like the pixar lamp) they were really onto something there and Id buy the design even just as a monitor for a pc!

@WWIIOLgeorgh fuck no it wouldn't. The difference is in permission handling, and kernel architecture. Not fucking marketshare. Fuckers who believe the marketshare virus myth are too fucking gullible.
There are so many videos now comparing boot times, and general speed. Many are better than this video. Still, I can't help but wonder, will people see this and finally upgrade their computer to Ubuntu? or will they keep avoiding it because someone who didn't know what they were talking about told them that Linux is hard?
I doubt people will switch to any of the *nixes just because of their familiarity with Windows. I've tried pushing Ubuntu 9.04 on a few friends, and as simple as it is, they insist Windows is easier. The biggest problem I've heard is their disdain for Synaptic.
linux has a bunch of crap. It's a great OS but you have to work with commands and everything to make a simple video game run. Windows 7 on the other hand is very simple and very great looking OS it's fast and runs everything.
well i havent even had mine for 7 months yet and i'm running ubuntu 9.04 which arguably blows vista away in my opinion but i guess win 7 was made to rectify vista's..."problems"...
but really it just depends on what ya do with your computer and of course the age of it.
Well Ubuntu has popularised Linux to a greater mass of not so well-informed people like myself. Common users have no idea of so many things knowledgeable people take for granted. You talk about drivers and they think you changed discussion to F1 (not the button!) for example!
Ubuntu is getting there, making it all much easier but still there is a little bit of work to do (ms office, printers, other hardware etc.). The good thing is that Ubuntu makes common people learning which is positive.
If you really think this is a fake test, why are you watching it?
And btw, every modern OS out there is far more usefull then DOS, but I guess you know that yourself.
If Ubuntu doesn't do it for you, then don't use it! If you like paying your bugs to MS, then freaking do it! But don't go point at every Linux user saying 'linux fan boy'. Thats just a freaking prejudgement. Its like saying every Windows user is a freaking dumbass, who doesn't know shit about computers. Thats just not true!
So if ubuntu has compiz windows has aero.Shit me.WIndows 7 is way faster i was in group of unix about 2 years i quit cuz i saw windows proccess.Get a life take windows..

boot time does not matter, its how well you can install apps, games etc.
linux is ok but to much work and most off us can't wait around.
But you can't really blame that on Linux. If those proprietary companies don't easily provide the drivers to Linux, then how can you expect the peripherals to work out of the box?
the companies don't develop for linux because many people are scared of cmd and installing there programs, alot of people dont want to read the manual so if linux create a way like windows to install programs with out the need of a keyboard then it would be easy.
If its easy more people would use it and developers would would release a linux version.
I would like to see linux take over the market, but first it needs to be easier so companies don't worrie about having usless phone calls.
I somewhat agree with this, but I personally like Linux the way it is . Linux presents a challenge and when set up correctly, can be one of the most stable systems out there. Yes granted Linux isn't for everyone, but that's why you have other operating systems like Windows. I personally don't care if Linux wins huge market shares, but that doesn't mean that companies shouldn't release their drivers to Linux.

P.S. One week after Win7 final release Ubuntu 9.10 will be released - that will be even quicker... 6 months later, Ubuntu 10.04 will appear, targeting a booting time of about 10sec. Maybe, then M$ releases Win7 SP1 with a booting time of less than 60sec!
2. win7 has not finished booting when the desktop appears!!!
3. win7 final will not be much quicker, even if m$ will optimize it...
so: Win7 takes much more time for booting. I have both systems installed: Win7RC1 and Kubuntu 9.04 (Kubuntu is even a bit slower in booting because starting KDE4 takes more time than starting Gnome). My booting times are 44sec for Kubuntu and 71sec for Win7 - both from boot menu until ready desktop, cpu <10% and hdd led stopped flickering.
the onli reason 7 takes time 2 boot is because it it rhe BETA version so there are still a few bugs but i have ubuntu and its boot time is still very impressive
linux actually has alot of software, even though windows may have all of the games and stuff, if i could play all my games on ubuntu i would stop using vista
I think 39s is a good mark for a Redmond system. However, I've heard today Fedora 11 is around 20s yet. Even better, Ubuntu engineers are working hard to reduce the boot up time to around 10 seconds for the 10.04 (2010 April) version.
As we don't know how the systems are configured -- how much ram, what processor and processor speed, the hard drive seek time, whether the drive is optimized, etc. -- and what and how much over the system minimum (if anything) is being pre-loaded at boot time for either OS, the 38 and 39 seconds figures are essentially meaningless.
Linux is for losers who have too much time on their hands to be able to configure shit to make it work. Don't tell me that Linux works "out-of-the-box," because even today, it simply just doesn't!
People with real lives whose time is valuable to them use Windows. Shi-shi-foo-foo, pretentious, and stuck-up trend-followers use OS X.
There's the simple truth, folks! We can stop these nonsensical OS wars now!!!
While I will admit that sadly, this is mostly true (regarding OS X), for users who understand the difference between monolithic and hybrid kernel architecture, a *nix based system is much more desirable. Another thing many Windows users fail to recognize is that OS X and Linux offer a much more robust command line experience, appealing again to the advanced user. Also, Apple holds their hardware to much higher standards, which is the only reason I didn't just build my first two OS X machines.
If Apple were as widely used as PC you can bet that they would have to produce hardware quicker, thus leading to having hardware failure. Given the fact that the Gates empire has such a stranglehold in the OS market, and that the average user could give a shit less about kernel architecture, or command line experience, Windows will always be the most widely accepted.
Hmm, I do think thats changing. There are more and more Linux users every day. And Ubuntu and Windows get better every release. There are more and more features stolen from Linux and Apple and put in Windows. So we'll see what happens. Canonical plans to lower Ubuntu's boot time to about 10 seconds as of 10.04 (april 2010). I do find that very convenient :) Sounds promising :)
And btw, Gates is no longer the CEO of the company. Its that FUD machine Steve Ballmer I think.
@yellowknifeandfork that's retarded. Apple assembles the parts. Intel still makes the processors, and AMD makes the graphics cards. So by your logic, since their parts (intel's and AMD's) should be experiencing failure all around, which mean Mac should be experiencing hardware failure already.
Here's the difference. If you get a Mac with a bad processor, just get it replaced under 9 month warentee.
OS X isn't just very efficient to work with (Expose FTW!), it also causes much less trouble. (very stable, no viruses, no driver problems, easier trouble shooting, etc.)
But did you know there's also an expose look-a-like in Linux? Ubuntu has Compiz Fusion installed by default. It has the Scale effect, which looks and acts a lot like expose.
Pointless .... so what if ubuntu starts with 5 seconds faster ?
Try to change the refresh rate to 85 hz in ubuntu , takes about half an hour to find the documentation and if you ar lucky it will work if not you probly mess up the xorg config an it will take an other half hour to find what is going wrong ...
In windows with 4-5 clicks is done ...
This is just an example of many things that are breaking very often in linux , and most of the time you fix different things in linux .
OMG, linux is not for idiots.. that's the main thing. It's {also} for pepole who WANT TO PLAY with their computer, who want to discover and aren't afraid of reading.
I-am not an idiot... Ihad it instaled for about 2 months, because of the desktop effects, but in time i seen that the effects are not worting. I can see what you find so cool on reading 10 pagees op crap to find a solution to a litle problem , and most of the time you rede like 10 20 pages to solve an issue and find out that it can't be fixed.....
So i don't see whai ubuntu claims that is an user frendly os..., maby it is untill you want to change somting ...
"Ihad it instaled for about 2 months, because of the desktop effects"
Thats hilarious. No one gives what you think about linux, because if you switched your OS solely because of DESKTOP EFFECTS, then that makes you look like a complete idiot.
Yea Linux isnt for a noob such as yourself, but for someone actually willing and able to learn their way around it, once its configured to your specifications it works fine, and doesnt lock up like XP seemed to do to me at least once a week
Whay would i stay that long cfg linux when in win i can do that with a few clicks and no need to read 10 pages to do a little thing . I don't understeand what you "linux guys" do in windows that screw up the pc ? i admit i had some errors in xp in 5 ears but not nearly half the errors i got in linux in 2 months. Now i have windows 7 for 2-3 months and i haven't got any errors, just some little bugs. so if you don't have a server to use linux with it i don't see the point of instaling linux.
Just get your computer/laptop preinstalled with Ubuntu. You won't need to configure anything this way. Research shows that Ubuntu is far more easier to learn then Windows for people who have never learned how to use computers.
But heck, I've wasted a lot of time reconfiguring Windows computers to pick up my hardware too. I don't really see any difference in hardware compatibility there.
you got ubuntu cause of visual effects? There's a better reason to get it than that. Yes ubuntu is user friendly... compared to other Linux distros :]
I am 100% sure that the newest linux users installed linux because of the visual effects ...and most of the after a couple of months realise that they will be board of them and swich back to windows. I don't say linux is not a good os, maybe is more stable than win, but the lack of software being developt by the major companis is why is so darn hard to use. Maby if all the people who make diferent distro's will unite and make just one distro, it will result in a fine os.
I'm not sure what the point of a boot time test would be. If your life is so harried that 20-30 seconds difference between boot times (note: according to bondavi, they boot about 1 second apart) is make or break, you seriously need to re-evaluate everything.
With Windows you've got no idea how much longer you have to wait for it to boot, with the progress bar in Ubuntu you've got a pretty good idea how it is progressing.
Id rather learn the Linux terminal Than deal with a virus or defragging my drives or paying 1500.00 for an outdated computer with osx

Better than what? Vista?

I think 39s is a good mark for a Redmond system. However, I've heard today Fedora 11 is around 20s yet. Even better, Ubuntu engineers are working hard to reduce the boot up time to around 10 seconds for the 10.04 (2010 April) version.

I heard a floppy drive just before you booted Windows 7 and lol'd.

You're welcome for opening your eyes. =)
SeikoPsycho 2 years ago
While I will admit that sadly, this is mostly true (regarding OS X), for users who understand the difference between monolithic and hybrid kernel architecture, a *nix based system is much more desirable. Another thing many Windows users fail to recognize is that OS X and Linux offer a much more robust command line experience, appealing again to the advanced user. Also, Apple holds their hardware to much higher standards, which is the only reason I didn't just build my first two OS X machines.
thepentaxianmkii 2 years ago
If Apple were as widely used as PC you can bet that they would have to produce hardware quicker, thus leading to having hardware failure. Given the fact that the Gates empire has such a stranglehold in the OS market, and that the average user could give a shit less about kernel architecture, or command line experience, Windows will always be the most widely accepted.
yellowknifeandfork 2 years ago 6
Hmm, I do think thats changing. There are more and more Linux users every day. And Ubuntu and Windows get better every release. There are more and more features stolen from Linux and Apple and put in Windows. So we'll see what happens. Canonical plans to lower Ubuntu's boot time to about 10 seconds as of 10.04 (april 2010). I do find that very convenient :) Sounds promising :)
And btw, Gates is no longer the CEO of the company. Its that FUD machine Steve Ballmer I think.
Jarige2 2 years ago
@yellowknifeandfork that's retarded. Apple assembles the parts. Intel still makes the processors, and AMD makes the graphics cards. So by your logic, since their parts (intel's and AMD's) should be experiencing failure all around, which mean Mac should be experiencing hardware failure already.
Here's the difference. If you get a Mac with a bad processor, just get it replaced under 9 month warentee.

"People with real lives whose time is valuable"
That's the exact description of OS X users.
OS X isn't just very efficient to work with (Expose FTW!), it also causes much less trouble. (very stable, no viruses, no driver problems, easier trouble shooting, etc.)
If you want to save time, get a mac!
(and don't post comments on utube :P)
All Windows is good for these days is gaming.

I really agree with this :)
But did you know there's also an expose look-a-like in Linux? Ubuntu has Compiz Fusion installed by default. It has the Scale effect, which looks and acts a lot like expose.
I really really love it :)

Sry for bad eng

OMG, linux is not for idiots.. that's the main thing. It's {also} for pepole who WANT TO PLAY with their computer, who want to discover and aren't afraid of reading.
0xdwabece 2 years ago

Fucking noob
str33nz 2 years ago
Whay would i stay that long cfg linux when in win i can do that with a few clicks and no need to read 10 pages to do a little thing . I don't understeand what you "linux guys" do in windows that screw up the pc ? i admit i had some errors in xp in 5 ears but not nearly half the errors i got in linux in 2 months. Now i have windows 7 for 2-3 months and i haven't got any errors, just some little bugs. so if you don't have a server to use linux with it i don't see the point of instaling linux.
KiarFuZzy 2 years ago
Just get your computer/laptop preinstalled with Ubuntu. You won't need to configure anything this way. Research shows that Ubuntu is far more easier to learn then Windows for people who have never learned how to use computers.
But heck, I've wasted a lot of time reconfiguring Windows computers to pick up my hardware too. I don't really see any difference in hardware compatibility there.
Jarige2 2 years ago
you got ubuntu cause of visual effects? There's a better reason to get it than that. Yes ubuntu is user friendly... compared to other Linux distros :]
fishcomputer33 2 years ago
I am 100% sure that the newest linux users installed linux because of the visual effects ...and most of the after a couple of months realise that they will be board of them and swich back to windows. I don't say linux is not a good os, maybe is more stable than win, but the lack of software being developt by the major companis is why is so darn hard to use. Maby if all the people who make diferent distro's will unite and make just one distro, it will result in a fine os.
KiarFuZzy 2 years ago
it would be a great OS.

BOOT TIME ? WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE !
ToxeCryz 2 years ago 6
I'm not sure what the point of a boot time test would be. If your life is so harried that 20-30 seconds difference between boot times (note: according to bondavi, they boot about 1 second apart) is make or break, you seriously need to re-evaluate everything.
lazydonovan 2 years ago 5
I'm more worried about how long it takes for all apps to initialize.

With Windows you've got no idea how much longer you have to wait for it to boot, with the progress bar in Ubuntu you've got a pretty good idea how it is progressing.
