Cannot get enough of this! I'm a Bowie fan, a Lou Reed fan and a guitarist. Essentially some of my favourite music has this truly underappreciated musician at the helm but taking little credit. A shame he's no longer with us. WE LOVE YOU MICK! x
Mick Ronson. STILL one of the best kept secrets in the history of rock and pop. Yes. He did an awful lot of the work for other acts that were good at gathering talented people around them. The guitar solo on "Once Bitten Twice Shy" is blissful.
Indeed Mick's voice sounds very Bowie alike here, but that's not strange coz when this was recorded Mick had been in Bowie's Spiders from Mars band for several years, doing a lot of (backing) vocals, especial during live shows. By the way: a nice cover of this song is made by The Human League
Grrrr The internet is such a f@cking paradoxical head f@ck!!! On the one hand you have people experiencing life in bite size pieces sat in the comfort of their own home instead of going out and living it and then on the other hand you have access to magic like this that would otherwise have passed you by your entire life!!!
This song sounds very Bowie-esque to me. Mick, Woody and Trevor never got the credit they truly deserved. I loved Bowie but he never seemed to allow these guys to get the recognition for their very substantial contribution to his music. Mick Ronson as far as I'm concerned is up there with the best - and always will be. RIP Mick - your legacy will live on forever and those who know music know that you really are the unsung hero.
Yes a gifted and modest man...I'm looking forward to the day when the whole of this 'Docugig' is available on DVD!!!...Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey never seem to get much credit either these days and they made up the rest of the Spiders from Mars...Regular and lovely talented blokes.....
Wow I never knew he had such a lovely voice. No wonder he and David sounded so beautiful together, in addition to simply being BEAUTIFUL together. ^_^
When people tell me Sweet, Kiss and Angel were influenced by Bowie I simply correct them and say, "nope, they were influenced by Mick Ronson." Not to take anything away from Bowie, but his work with Ronson is my favorite. Richard O'Brien of Rocky Horror fame must have been a big fan too.
true, because Mick wrote alot or even most of the guitar rifts for the early bowie material, but they made an agreement to credit to just Bowie, but from Hunky Dory-Ziggy Stardust alot of the material was written by Mick
Oh My God! Mick Ronson!I never saw this before.Mick Ronson was scary! he was the perfect example of the the symbol of british rock guitar gods!I can't think of anyone who has as much presence and style as Mick! I think he's so great I can't put it into words.Truely one of a kind.I still get a thrill. Thank God I got to see him with Dylan's band -Greg Dray Liverpool
I had dinner with Trevor Bolder and he told me the real story...one day..Dave just dropped everyone, started recording with others....no explanation.... just did it....
@gordonbrownsfeet Ronson and Bowie were great together, Ziggy Stardust is a perfect album. IMO these guys were huge influences on the punk rock sound of the 70s.
He didn't leave Bowie. Dave dumped him. It broke my heart (and Mick's). If you don't believe me listen to "Play Don't Worry" to get Mick's take on it. In any event, Mick remains my #1 guitar hero and he got me through my teenage travails.
absolutely love this track. couldn't help but notice on an episode of the culture show recently that primal scream have completely ripped it for the title track off their new album
a friend of mine, who's a big dylan fan, remembers mick singing "life on mars" when mick was a member of dylan's rolling thunder revue. does footage of this performance exist?
It's 100% The Rainbow Theatre '74. They filmed both nights. Where are the tapes? 34 years ago now, OMG!
I was at this gig & even know one of the stage invaders! Never saw the footage until now. Thanks BillyP. I recall everybody storming forward during Moonage Daydream.
I was impressed with Ronno's singing that night, really powerful, as his album was yet to be released.
Lucky enough to met Mick years later (& his sister, one of the backing singers here). A SuperSoul. God Bless Him.
the fact is that... after years and years I understood that the creator of much of the music style and arrangements of the Ziggy Era is a trademark of Mick Ronson and not Bowie.
The Bowie influence in his voice is really apparent here...Rono was a fantastic guitarist and could have easily had a great solo career if not for Mainman Productions.
The memory of seeing Mick perform this live in 74 and getting crushed when everyone rushed the stage at Newcastle City Hall...Priceless!. The man is a Star!
is there any way of seeing footage from ronno live during this period like a dvd or something???

Without Rono and the spiders, Mr Bowie would never have been Ziggy.just David Jones or Arnold Corns
and i must admit, Bowie has never better'd the Ronson years.
Rock on for ever Mick, RIP miss you every day
