I think it's a bad idea to fall into hero worship when it comes to musicians. with all the blessed talent that's come down thru the years, to say this or that person is the "best" is unfair to all the other artists. personal likes and dislikes can alter opinions and make for terrible fights and pissing contests. people, let's just please enjoy these wonderful makers of music and share peacefully.
Tommy Shaw is amazing. He has great stage presence. Great entertainer. Tommy and the other original band members is another example of chemistry that just happens.
to have someone shread on an electric, accoustic, 12 string accoustic, and write classic, memorable songs and have an outstanding voice, this is truly jesus masked as tommy
He is the best guitar player. He is my insperation for me to play guitar. They are my favorite band i love him, Lawrence Gowan, and James young. i love them!!!!
LOL Tommy's a GREAT musician, but that Taylor Jumbo 12-String is as big as he is! I'm pretty sure he's an elf; that's why he's only aged 3 years since joining Styx in 1976.
Tommy Shaw & James Young are huge influences on my playing. Extremely tasteful, thought-out solos. Very inventive, too...like the rythm gtrs in Borrowed Time or Great White Hope. The solo for Best of Times could not be better. Someone else mentioned Mick Jones of Foreigner. Another example of how taste will always out-last the flash. Foreigner & Styx can always tour even without radio or video support.
I agree,Tommy and James are Influences as well Neal Schon for me,It has always been Journey,Styx and REO, for me,Just Awesome arena Rockers,Dont come any better than that in my Ears, Bands that stand the test of Time! Oh and Rush....
Its hard to even fathom how difficult that is to play because first of all that would be hard enough on a regular guitar but to do it on a 12 string... 12 strings aren't that easy to play ya know lol
Beethoven called the guitar a minutature orchestra. In Tommy's hands it becomes one. And I have had the privilege of meeting him twice and he was always a real nice guy.
anyone know if tabs were released for this? ive tried to figure it out myself but havent had much luck. its such a nice song and am dieing to play it.
Why would anyone make a comment on someone they don't like? If you really think they have no talent, why waste your time? So appearently everyone that talked shit about Tommy truely has an interest in him.
Tommy is not the best guitarist , but he is very good! as far as him being an asshole, well we all have are bad days!! I met him in 1996 and he was totally nise and talked to me for over 5 minutes.
dude what are you talking about there are too tommy shaw solos have you heard prelude twelve and suite madam blue both of those have a solo on twelve both by tommy shaw
Tommy is a fantastic guitar player. On the Rolling Stones' 100 greatest guitar solos there is not a single Tommy Shaw solo. I don't about you but that is criminal!
If Styx really DID suck, as many of you are saying, why did they happen to sell four consecutive platinum (three of them triple) albums in the US? And don't say bad taste, because it's petty fucking hard to believe that ten million people have bad taste.
You guys are assuming music can only be used in the context of "good taste". Music serves many purposes. Hip-hop isn't meant to stimulate your brain like prog-rock might. Same goes for tv jingles and some such.
And who cares what 10 million people buy? As long as they're spending their money (instead of mine), it's all good. Hey, they might even buy my crappy music someday! ;)
It really isn't a solo, more like an intro. This is the intro to Crystal Ball. The person who posted this labeled it a solo but didn't post the rest (which is awesome).
I do like tommy shaw but damn he looks like steffi graf..........for the record i saw him in 80 before half you posters even knew what rock & roll was.Trivia what does Styx stand for or mean? Hint > a river
tommy shaw has more talent in his strumming hand than harrymonster2s and godlike211s familys have combined..o and heres a hint..if you dont like him dont watch his videos!!!!!!
I don't think Tommy would ever claim to be one of the greatest guitarists around...he IS a great entertainer though and is well respected by his peers for his singing/song writing/guitar playing ability.
Tommy Shaw does not sell his autograph. At the t-shirt stand you can buy autographed CD's. He does not now or has he ever sold his autograph regardless of what anyone says!
Tommy Shaw is a member of Styx, Damn Yankees & Shaw Blades. He wrote and has lead vocals on "Renegade", "Foolin' Yourself", "Crystal Ball", "Blue Collar Man" just to name a few of his songs.
Yeh you got me...just wanted to point out you never know what's going on in someone else life.Shit happens,I've only got to see him 3 times, no chance of getting as close as you were.I Did once have front row seats purchased then the show was canceled.See shit happens!Have a good one!
Same thing happened to me in Seattle. There was 4 of us wating outside backstage after the show. He just walked by and smiled like "sorry suckers" and jumped into a van. I'm a huge fan of Tommy's work just not his personality. Huge differance between someone with a terminal illness and a swollen head!
Hi please don't take this offensively...At 50 you sound like a spoiled kid.I am not in the public eye My plate is full, recently I had a Good friend drop by unannounced & I could not even let her in the door as I was preparing to go to another city.Tommy being in the public eye has so much more going on in his life than we would. Give him a break...treat him "like a human".Think of people who have a terminal illness, the victims of 911 & natural disasters.Your problem is so minimal.Cheers!

What does her age have to do with it? Tommy's older than she is. You make it sound like she's a "poor old lady". And, I've gotten his autograph and picture, so I find it hard to believe this story. And the guy who said he smiled like "sorry suckers". That's just wrong to assume. You can't judge someone by a "walk by". Grow up people, just because he's famous doesn't give you the right to "require" anything from him.
Her age has to do with it because she's been a fan since 1977 opening for Aerosmith on the "Grand Illusion" tour.
It was her birthday and she's the only one who asked.
He's a big huge nothing!
Dennis Deyoung came through and talked to us for 20 minutes and signed a record and a cd cover and took pictures with us...No that's a true musician taking care of fans.
Tommy will sell you his autograph for $40.00 at the t-shirt stand.
The reason these guys don't sign an autograph for every dick, joe, and harry is because there are idiots waiting by their bus with 20+ albums for them to sign just so they can sell them on ebay to make a quick buck.
he's awesome

I recently brought a Tanglewood 12 String Guitar, it's very hard to get used to, but i'll get there! One day I want to play like this man!
Absolutely brilliant!

Nice What model was it? Ive got a tanglewood 6 string its the best
WhackaJacka 2 years ago
Dam.. be very careful with that and keep it in a case at all times. Tanglewoods have had big humidity problems this year. It's all made in China.
I had a Sundance and cracked within 3 weeks.
I got a Taylor and I'm very happy now.
Bit more expensive but worth it.
intelliGENeration 2 years ago 2
as for the humidity you can by lil humidifiers for the cases and it supposed to keep hem from drying out and cracking and warping .
maybe worth looking into for you guys.....
also dont play in the shower lol
