@Rainkatify Well, remember, the ancestors were actually the original decendants. My theory is that Nepeta's love travelled to the Disciple, and since Redglare and the Sufferer weren't alive at the same time, he might have learned to love her. Remember, it said that it took time for the Sufrferer to open his heart to the Disciple.
I thought he refused to sleep because of the messed up shit in the dream bubbles, which is what you experience if you sleep while your dream self is dead.
