I would have personally liked to see perhaps a comparison in the classical style as well since there are very significant differences between not only the styles, but also the make of the horns used for classical and jazz playing.
Instantly I noticed a few keen differences. The P-Bone is perfect for the high school and middle school student. Its cheap and lightweight, as well as overall easier to play. Only the seasoned musician would notice the tonality differences. However, the brass will always be the professional's pick as its resonant an full sound will instantly top the P-Bone.
I play guitar so I think pbone has good sound, I love Saint´s march!!!!! thanks for this video and congratulations for the way you play!!! Grettings from Mexico!!!
im a starter with the trombone(6th grade) and im going to buy one of these and show my music teacher and see what she says and my music teachers fun so shell like it
@austinfire0324 Don't do it. There is absolutely no comparison. If you plan on being a serious trombonist, it's best to invest in a real instrument. There are too many variables (such as mouthpiece, microphone, etc) that play into the equation. You will never get the crisp, clear bell tones of a real instrument on one made from the same material as your garbage cans.
No, seriously! I really do! I played two trombones at the same time (it was the same note, and quality wasn't that great, but what do you expect when you're playing a small-bore with a 15C and a large-bore with a 5G!?). It's also on my channel!
No, this is not an attempt to get people to check out my channel, but just to say "Hi, my name is also Paul, and I play the trombone also!"
I Want a PBone, I think your love for tromboning you should buy a Pbone and give it away to a fan of your videos like me ( hint hint) P.S. I 'm a fifth grader and I am in the best trombone player in the whole 5th grade band(55 kids)
@TheWeirdVMShields Umm How many trombone players are in your band ?!? Cuz its a little hard to compare to other student who do not play your instrument, I play trombone but flutes have an advantage to all kinds of 16th notes (Since they play with fingers and not using a whole arm) XD And 55 kids, that's a nice sized band
0:59 - 1:15 made me want to shoot myself in the face. You are an awesome player and I really appreciate the comparison. It was exactly what I came here for. But, you know ... the face shooting thing. There's that.
@Crymzon1980 There is a guy on tubenet (a tuba forum) that has created a tuba that is almost all plastic except the main slides and the valves. He is trying to get carbon fiber valves and wants to figure out how to make the main slides out of plastic also. It isn't the best sounding thing I have ever heard but it is pretty neat.
The brass trombone is so much better!! The plastic one sounds so fake and more like a machine rather than jazz or classical, it's also easier to move the slide on the brass trombone if u haven't noticed... This is from a clarinet player xD and I agree how the brass sounds rich and full in sound(:
Hi!!!!! This is wonderful! I play trombone, too. I also play sax, clarinet, flute, percussion, trumpet (my favorite one) and strings. Have a wonderful day!
maybe use the plastic trombone during marching band rehearsals. Then use the brass one during performances. My biggest fear is taking a $2,000 trombone into a block with a 2 step interval and marching a diamond shape. That would certainly be worth the investment during a practice where damage is a very real possibility
-what kind of lube do you use with a Pbone ? a fatbased lub would damage it no ?
-I used to play trombone, and just when I started to manage pretty good solos, I was affected with a desaes that causes multiple symptoms among witch is the fact that I can't maintain a sufficient pressure with my mouth anymore. Just wanted to know if there exists some type of bone or embouchures that require a lower pressure. I dream about playing this wonderfull instrument again...
My friend got a pbone and it sounds pretty great although it's a little difficult to hit lower notes and the slide feels really strange because it's plastic on plastic
Btw, having a metal mouthpiece helps a lot. Playing the pbone with the plastic mouthpiece it comes with makes it sound much more airy and thin. So if you decide to get one, get a decent mouthpiece to go with it.
well this is a nice video and i was wondering what you think about wedge mouth peices for the trombone as i have been using a schilke 51d for 2 years and i was thinking about upgrading i mean im in 7th grade been playing since i was in 4th grade so i have a good bit of experince im still like an amateur so i was wondering if you have yoused wedges and if you could share the pros and cons and does it have any effects with different trombones ?
Damn, someone beat me to it. I've been joking with some of my repair customers that I'm going to Home Depot, get some PVC and build plastic handslides. I'm curious how the plastic horn holds up to the knocks the typical school kid gives their instrument. I already know how the brass ones fair. Sure the brass one is brighter etc. so what if the kid dents it every other week.
Interesting comparison, a super nice hi dollar shires with a 150 pbone. I agree with his observations, but if you have to play outside in the cold... but, I would like to know what the banana thought, seems to be enjoying both horns.
@PaulTheTrombonist I've noticed the same thing with my pbone. The lack of resonance and loss of overtones causes me to lose the "character" of my sound. Pretty generic tone. Overall it has FAR exceeded my expectations and I'll probably try it out on a gig or two for fun. Good video, I hope to get one like this up in the next few weeks comparing the pbone with my '49 Olds Super.
Nice job on this PTT, but I have to wonder how much the closeness in sound has to do with your mic and the compression of the audio going on to youtube. For $150 the Pbone is quite remarkable, and I am thoroughly enjoying playing mine, but it doesn't even come close to my Bach in sound or playability. When you are A/Bing them, do they really sound as similar to you as they seem to on the video?
Thanks for the side by side. You're proof enough that it's more about the player than the gear. Gear is important but at the end of the day you've got to have the chops.
@mrstableman Oh right I didn't know that but anyway it was just an advice and it's his choice of he wants to take it! I've been constantly reminded about such basics by my trombone tutors and band instructors! But don't get me wrong! Not trying to sound cocky or anything. Just trying to share what I have learnt from experience! :-)
Hey a piece of advice: do lock your wrists when you're sliding and try not to use your fingers and the bell to estimate the slide positions. Anw thanks for comparing the pbone with a Shires!
@chengningjanine This guy is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, has a Masters in Jazz Studies and gigs out routinely with the some of the top musicians in Hollywood. I think he is beyond trivial advice.

the Pbone Trombone sounds a little more mute than the brass. So no doubt the brass would be louder.
However the Brass cannot get to deeper sounds that easy. The Pbone would have an easier time with that.
The Brass can dent when dropped. As far as I know, the Pbone would have trouble to just have a small dent.

the difference is in the overtones.....the brass has a more colorful sound than the plastic.
