If I'm ever in New York, I will be sure to get both, a close shave and a hair cut at your shop.
If there is one thing I love, is keeping traditions going, and keeping them up to date. Specially if said tradition can do a much better job than the Gillete disposable garbage that takes half of my face off with each shave.
See all the irritation on his face and neck, this man must use the latest greatest Gillette Cartrige and canned goo. Use a good soap lather, preferably with Tallow, a badger/boar brush on your face, and a razor with the least amount of blades that you can get away with, preferably 1 blade only. Gillette still makes the sensor, with 2 blades, you gotta open your eyes at the drug store or wally world though, they try to hide them. just sayin, hope I help somebody!!! :)
Great video, I'm a str8 shaver with a fair collection ! Our style and technique may be different, but your attitude and attention to detail embody what most str8 shavers look for in a barber. You're a rare breed, keep it alive.
Awesome stuff Oscar! by far best shave tutorial on the web. This guys really knows his stuff, I am taking my son and myself in for a shave. Thanks for posting this great vid
Oscar, you have got the most killer barber shop in the world! I love the old school style of everything. I started cutting my own hair about a year ago, this makes me want to become a barber. Keep up the good work.
Oscar, where did you learn to shave like this? You taught the guy all the wrong things. And why did you skimp on the cream at the end? No wonder his face looked irritated. That didn't look like any pre-shave oil I have seen, it looked like a facial scrub. Also, you didn't cover his entire neck with the hot towel and the cream was too dry. You should've rubbed water in to hydrate the cream more.
I wouldnt be able to sit still like that when someone else is tickling the shit out of my face.... probably not safe to get a straight rzr shave when youre super ticklish.
@Sadbizzle No need for all that, its only a shave, not surgery. Usually barbers use powder to coagulate the blood seeping through the pores after a shave,I don't need it cause my shaves don't cause that. By cream I suppose you mean shaving soap? I did use it, I use a shaving cream called ProShave, its lanolin based with menthol. I prefer it over expensive creams or soaps that you don't really need. Keep in mind that its not the product that makes the shave a good one, its the barber behind it.
@shimrra well, I am a commercial barber working many different clients. New York State Board standards doesn't allow use of the same razor on different clients for disease transmission purposes. It's more sanitary to use a brand new disposable blade on every single person (which by the way are very good stainless steel or aluminum). Also lots of my clients own their own solid straight blade who we keep in their lockers here or they bring with them and I use those too.
@kduideo Actually for Manhattan standards my services are fairly affordable. My haircuts are $48.00 and Shaves $30.00 (The Works Special which includes both plus a shoulder and scalp electric massage is $65.00) compared to the salon upstairs who charges $120 for a men's haircut.
@SombraLocs really you can use anything that will help soften the skin like baby oil, petroleum jelly, or massage cream. Instead of pre-shave oil I actually use Queen Helene's Cucumber Massage Cream. Works great and its really cost effective, plus the cucumber scent serves kind of like aroma therapy. Hopes this helps.
@BigMrJuarez find an exceptionally good barber with good habits (and by that I mean clean techniques like clipper/scissor-over-combs as opposed to barbers that use plastic number guards) these techniques show real skill. Watch his work, watch lots and take metal notes. Practice on the neighborhood kids or kid brothers before you know it you'll be ready for your State Board Exam.
I bought a straight razor but really want to know the best method first. I really liked this video. Both guys looked very natural & comfortable. The preparation was clear as was the steps throughout & the camera followed the razor, not stuck in one place. No faults with this. Good vid, the best I've seen yet on this subject. Cheers for the vid.
I want to get a straight razor; this is how men should shave. Disposables are for wimps. With this video, I now know what to do. Once I practice on a balloon.
@elbuenjergar If you get in-growing hairs, don't shave so close, stay w/ the grain. If its irritation, try a Dry Shave. Shaving soaps can cause irritation after a shave since they are penetrating the skin (not everyone's skin likes alcohol/fragrance)sprinkle just a little drop of water on the shaving area only once and then shave. That's it. by doing this you are actually using the blade to "sand down" a few layers of skin. Will take a little getting used to since its a bit rougher on the face.
Amazing! Thats how a barber should dress, very crisp and neat. The shave was excellent. However when cutting on clients you want to use a disposable blade for health reasons.
Thanks for the kuddos guys. By the way, I am 1/2 latino and 1/2 Portuguese. My grandfather was a barber in Portugal and taught me all I know. I love my job and I wish more people would apreciate the traditional art of barbering more. Feel free to add my facebook page to your likes /oscarnewyork
@oscarmaya79 I wish we had barbers like you in the United Kingdom. They are few and far between. My local barber is now staffed by women who only seem to know how to use hair clippers. They can't shave anything, not even the back of the neck correctly!!!! A shop doing Indian Head Massage, a haircut and proper shave like the one you demonstrated would be excellent. It's a shame the tradition has died out here.
@oscarmaya79 I have been wanting to shave with a straight razor for years, it is just manly. Cheap plastic razors, who the hell came up with those? I might end up getting a straight razor for Christmas. The North Vancouver knife store has carbon blades and stainless steel. What do you recommend? How do you strop your blade? Where do I buy a strop? If you shave after a shower, is the towel necessary? Is there a certain way to care for razors?
@TheAlphaWires Sure, just be extra careful since those blades are stainless steal which makes it more solid than an aluminum razor. I'm a fan of Russian or German made straight razors made with galvanized steel.
what was the pre-shave oil that you where using?
