I did not know you could get a small ham radio in that price range. Looking on Ebay now...Hope to find a used one. Perfect size for a small backpack or emergency setup.
@ThePatriotsChoice That's EXACTLY why I went with this one. I hope to someday use it as a "bugout bag" radio when I move one to something w/more capability. Good luck on your search!
@dafrogtoad Just looked at the Reviews at a couple of HAM forums...Not bad for the price is the overall consensus. It seems like theirs a lot of people in the community who want a radio for the same purpose. Thanks brother for another good video.
Told you it was small. Its kid size... LOL Look forward to hear how well you can get out with that little radio and your future setup. Thanks for sharing.
@dafrogtoad I may have to a couple up just to play with. Be good for the kids BOB (off frequencies GMRS/FRS) of course! But hey in a SHTF who is going to care?
@1oldarmyguy You need a GMRS license for those channels correct? Family radio Service is open like CB....Correct me if I am wrong...I was thinking about programming the GRMS and FRS up and down freqs into mine once I get it.
@ThePatriotsChoice For 2M and 440 I'm quite sure a license is needed. I'm a bit foggy on this, but I believe these CAN be altered (if they don't stock) to work on FRS freqs, which require no license. I'm a beginner, don't forget.
@ThePatriotsChoice I do believe there are license requirements for GMRS/FRS radios if you are using more then just the walkie talkies you buy at most retail stores. Those radios are only 0.5 watts vs 5 watts. I look at this way in a SHTF, is it really going to matter? I think that would be the least of the worries. I have them programed on my Wouxun. I wouldn't hesitate to program another radio if I got either... just saying...it would be SHTF...so who cares..... Charlie Mike!
Nice alternative to the other hand-held radios available. I picked up on a couple of the Wouxun radios about a month ago and just got around to unboxing them this week. Like you, I can credit Ray for that one too because I really like them for the price/features/value. Best of luck on your HAM test. I'm sure you'll do just fine.
I know this radio! one of the inexpensive Chinese "clones:. It will operate on US Amateur bands, but, unless it has a computer programming interface, it's gonna be a bear to program freqs into it. A DTMF pad is almost essential. Makes entry and learning a lot easier. You will learn a lot with this radio, and for $45, its a good deal, but its NOT gonna be easy! Feel free to PM me when you need help!
You will have your "training wheels" off in NO time!! Looks like a great buy to me.. but then again... I know nothing about them..LOL Good luck to ya frog!
Are you making fun of my HUGE radio? Lol! Just the battery sets in the docking portion and the radio sits in there so you can read it on your desk top. Hmm, I didn't think you could program that radio with a data cable, guess I need to check into that. Take care.
Thanks. I just ordered one.

@abster156 I don't remember exactly...a week or so?..I got it from an American seller..I remember that. Sorry i could not give you an exact answer.
dafrogtoad 1 month ago
First off, GMRS requires a license, 50 watts maximum.
FRS is a .5 watt maximum service but license free.
Most radios that are part 90 certified and meet the power limits are fine.

Not only a training radio but something to put in your jacket and have with you always.
I own several handheld radios like the expensive kenwiind TH79, still love the baofeng and I have the baofeng with me werever I go.
