  • LMAO This is like 80% of psych students I see. Funny but sad.

  • so is there any masters/PhD programme that would be applicable in the real world with good job chances and reputation or is it all just choosing the least of several evils?

  • 4:41 - 4:59 haha!

  • what about a PsyD ?

  • Wow. This is kind of great. . .

  • Caraline...dont walk into the light

  • PhD and

  • Wow...if these answers came from a psychologist I feel really sorry for her patients and/or students. I am pursuing my doctorate in psychology and this video really made me think. Even though some of this information is true, I hope it doesn't discourage anyone who wants to pursue their dreams. I have spoke to a few psychologists that have their masters but, fell short of their doctorates. They tell me that the difference between a master and a doctor, is that the doctor can write.

  • My mom is a doctor in clinical psychology.

    This cracks her up.

    :D

  • Dear God...this is true...I am 31 and am in my last year. Dated some mental patients too. Yay for more clinical experience!

  • Maybe I'm just being miserable myself, but this video seems very nihilistic/hypocritical.. The woman she's talking to is a clinical psychologist herself and she doesn't look that impoverished and stressed.. It's a bit like the unhelpful, typical advice people give "It's all very well wanting to be _____ but first you have to .. and then you have to..".. As long as you really want something it shouldn't be so hard (within reason), but people just seem to want to put others off these days.

  • The hell?

  • This is the funniest of the so you want a phd in....yet. thanks

  • OMGGGGGGG lol

  • K.i.L.L.E.R. TRUTH ! Thnx for making me SMiLE...i SHOULD have seen this in '92 !

  • I could not find help with childcare costs as a part time student and had to leave uni even though I really wanted to be a clinical psychologist. I no longer feel depressed about that having watched this. The system just screws students over and up for the rest of their lives it's a joke!

  • They should totally show these sort of 'so you want to's in high school to students before they actually get into uni.

  • dont get a phd. just get a masters. dont let this video affect your feelings on becoming a psychiatrist. theirs bad things about every career. you dont need a phd to be successful.

  • @baalliinn831 psychiatrists are MDs, I think you mean therapist

  • @baalliinn831 You can't just get a master's. You don't get to work without supervision without a PhD. You get even less respect too.

  • SOooo true !!!!

  • Psychology is a pseudo-science. And people whostudy psychology tend to be idiots. Mostly girls with issues towards men. I swear, here at UCLA far more than half of all psych majors that ive met are all GIRLS! WTF?! I'd say around 3/4 of psych majors are girls. Probably more than that. And they all think theyre so fucking smart. lol... it's hilarious to hear idiots think they know what theyre talking about. Men study REAL SCIENCE. Girls, get back in the kitchen!

  • @ilisbaani Why don't you define real science? It sounds, ironically, like you are a guy who has issues towards women. But who cares about your views in life? :L

  • @ilisbaani troll

  • nope.

  • Very funny -- and I am fascinated by the process by which this was made, too! -- and all basically true.

Fine that the girl who wants to tell people what's wrong with them may turn a corner and become a life coach - but I'd have liked this better if the professor eventually revealed, to the girl or to the viewer, that her work brings her joy, or that money or no money she is doing the thing she was meant to do -- I'd like her to emerge as a true "teacher" (guru) at the last minute.

  • Lol!

  • I feel so depressed now.... I wanted to become a psychologist but now I'm more down than ever... :(

  • Very very amusing. If only someone had told me this b4 I decided to become a clinical psychologist!!

  • @napes74 Me Too...where was my HEAD in '92???ha...ha...

  • PhD's are really not for everyone....

If you are not a fan of endless reading, deadlines, research, criticism, writing and math then you probably shouldn't try to get a PhD in the first place.

Most people I know would do better getting a master's degree for what they really want to do.

  • @Agumon5 Even psychologists that have PhD's are prone to systematic and quite frankly confirmation biases when it comes to publishing psychological studies. In fact, I seen psychologists with PhD's publishing studies that turn out statistically significant while ignoring the negative ones, lacking independent replication, and worst lacking genuine criticism. This is especially true in the Psychological Bulletin, which 92% of the studies suffered from bias....

  • Hilarious! And thank you! It is true much of Psychology is a waste of time. I dont think psychologists are very good at dealing with depression, anxiety or addictions, there are much better places to go for that stuff. BUT there are specific areas where only a Psychologist can really help: e.g. Dealing with certain stroke patients, helping kids with Autism, understanding Alzheimer's. Can anyone think of other "useful" areas where only psychology can help?

  • "I really just want to tell people that what they were doing is wrong... because I feel that I have all the right answers, even though I am only twenty-two years old." Haha I love the beginning and how it transitions into blatant sarcasm after!

  • "I really just want to tell people that what they were doing is wrong..."

  • Anyone else think the brunette sounds like Bridgette Nielson? Rock on!

  • "My family will be proud of me and call me Doctor.

Your mother will cry and ask you why you did not become a real doctor."

    Sounds like my mother.

  • I am getting my masters in psychology right now lol

Though I am not gay or married. Though a LOT of the women in my program are married.

  • lol the cats wont call you doctor

  • LMAOOOO

  • This is totally golden and awesome.

  • I'm just interested in dysfunction.

  • THAT was so funny.

  • OMG this was terrible and patronizing no help really...kinda make a mockery of serious individuals who are serious about attaining their Ph.Ds or Psy.Ds

  • Ignorant but cute :)

  • I was talking to a therapist (an LCSW) about possibly going back to school to study clinical psychology. She showed me this video. We were both cracking up the whole time.

If you are lucky enough to get your license, you will be at least 30 years old and just starting your career. All of your friends will be married with children and only men with mental problems who want free therapy will want to date you.

  • I have been a clinical psychologist in private practice for over 20 years. Much of this rings true. This field is about helping people with their mental health, not making money. You will make $10-$20 more per hour than CSW's and insurance companies discourage testing. Only people looking for medicine (e.g. adhd), compensation, or custody want evals. anyway. You will make about $80-$90 on average per client hour. You will net about $30-$40 an hour after you pay overhead and taxes.

  • I want to do clinical psychology because I have a deep interest in mental health and the psychology behind it. I love to work with people and I am a very social person. I also want to make my parents proud by obtaining a doctrate and I want to be secure by earning a good salary. But that's not all that's important. If your point was to try to make people considerate of their career, this video won't do it. This video is demoralizing, pessimistic, unhelpful, redundant and downright utter tripe.

  • Wow, interesting...

  • wow, why am i watching this, it makes me want to cry :(

  • I'm a straight male pursuing a MSW, eventually will get a LCSW. I'll be 22 when I graduate, and only 10 grand in debt. I get a wider view of client systems and a fast track to counseling. I can do independent research and training, and I am more likely to get hired.

  • Just become a pharmacist.

  • @christpunchers lol nice name

  • I'd be pissed if brown hair'ed girl woulda said to me "Go see a therapist."

    Punch her in the face.

    Fuuuuucker

  • when haters can't do something themselves, they try to prevent other from doing it

people who can't dedicate themselves and get a degree will make statements such as "college is a scam"

  • i think what this means is do something for the love of it ---because only that will help you stick on the path , not for the results--money, fame , status ,peer approval ---self esteem can only come from within....

  • @ladida8628 THANK YOU for getting it!

  • @iPsychDoc78 This video is theBEST because it is very honest. LIfe is expensive and the rewards for making the scarafices in pursuing an advance degree should be there, or else, why bother? A wisely invested lump sum of money in some other direction could prove more beneficial. Also, people need to be very practical. Because the debt from school is very real.

  • This is depressing :(

  • This was the most biased example of learning about getting a PhD. And yet, I am still very nervous that it's true :(

  • @LiveLaffLove1 It's pretty close to the truth, sorry.

  • I'm surprised that the professor didn't mention that even if she found a classmate to marry, that classmate would have the same debt and therefore could not be the one to buy their dream house...

  • This was just as hilarious as it was demoralizing. Seriously, I lol'd then I worried. Back to the grad school search.

  • @Furisu212 Good luck! It's worth it! :)

  • @Furisu212 oh man. i felt the same way. I loled and then was like...what if it's all true? i'm starting school next month!!!

  • GLaDOS anyone?

  • Oh man, this is sad and so true. Only she also should have noted that you will eventually lose your job to a 25 year old social worker/counselor/master's level clinician because hospitals and clinics won't want to spend the money to pay someone with your qualifications. In today's world it's not about providing the best service to patients, it's about cheap labor.

But I still love my degree. And what I do. Even if it is a financial disaster.

  • @pamelag812 Yes, it all about cheap labor, so that people who have a lot of debt to pay down are in a awkward position. The debt can run one's life, and the high pay that should normally come with a high education level , in this case, doesn't.

  • My Cats don't call me Dr. LOL

  • lol this makes sense that this is in the states.. its not so grueiling in canada

  • School is for losers.

  • She is wrong about the life coaching though... Lol.

  • Sooooooo true.lol

  • LOLLLLLLLLLLL \O/

  • Kinda don't want to be a Psychologist now. LOL.

  • @SelenaL10 Yeah, skip it ....goi into some type of business...since everything is a business.

  • LOL these are awesome

  • This is sad... Reality really bites sometimes.

  • hahah love it

  • Well damn

  • tink i wanna change my career choice.....dis is not vry pleasin 2 find out :S

  • I so wish I'd seen this before I started studying psychology. On the other hand in makes me feel marginally OK about only having a Masters.

  • Is this really the truth about clinical psych? I am nervous now lol

  • This is great!

  • I'm a guy but I'm "idealistic" and outright delusional as this girl. There's nothing worse in this life than to feel one is useless and to pursue a path in academia is ridden with problems as you carry on your shoulders a mediocre mind which drowns in a sea of like minded and individuals with greater potentials.

But alas I'm an ADHD depressive with daily suicide thoughts. Its unfortunate.

  • @Standuble Sounds like a cry for help. Where is our clinical Psychologist!?

I understand what your saying. But I'm undergrad right now in my BS in Computer Science. I'm big fish at my Junior College but I fully expect to be shown how dumb I am, daily, when I get to my 4-year. There's no solution to this issue however since this is how your learn. You learn by trying, making mistakes, correcting those mistakes, and doing it right the next time, all while building previous experience.

    Good luck.

  • so funnnyy!! so pleased here in the uk we get funded by the NHS... shame it makes it all the harder to get on there!!!

... my cats don't call me dr either... so funny

  • I absolutely love this!

  • This is a very funny videoclip! After 10 years of university, 2 years of postdoc, licensing exams... why do it?

  • This is f**king hilarious. I am gonna graduate with an M.Phil degree in Clinical Psychology in about a month. Most my classmates appeared for an entrance for a Ph. D and i was so sure i didn't want it.

I am already close to thirty and keep comparing myself with my classmates from school who were dumb but chose fancier degrees like engineering and are earning bigger money and are married, some even with kids. Ah! For all the hard work that i did and do, all i get are peanuts :D

    Super!!

  • LOL

"There will be a few wonderful men in your graduate program, however, they will all be married or homosexual.."

  • @Leonidus0 That's EXACTLY what I thought before she said it because that pretty much describes the guys in my program. All 3 of them.

  • life coaches! My god.....

  • I think I'll just stay in denial and learn the hard way.

  • @dafana LOL, exactly what I was thinking. Hope I don't regret it.

  • so sad ...

  • LOL

  • I just changed my major to psychology. This is scary :(

  • Haha this girl is delusional

  • One has to make the distinction between the PhD and PsyD route.

The former will allow you to get an internship without much difficulties, get a real post-doc and come out without any debt. As for a PsyD. or a Ph.D. in counselling ... don't waste your time or money. These are a dime a dozen and you can get them at various dimploma mills. In the Chicago area ALONE about 300 PsyDs are manufactured every year.

  • @aporeh

PsyD degrees are just as valid, just go to a good program. And psychology school mills also churn out PhD's. I have a PsyD and I had a ton of interviews for internships, all at APA accredited programs, and am having no trouble landing job/postdoc interviews at prestigious hospitals. But if you think PhD programs won't make you come out with a ton of debt, those days are pretty much over. Everyone I know has a ton of debt, PhD and PsyD alike.

  • okay so now I DON'T want to be a clinical psychologist, which is nothing against the profession. but if I just want to work with patients, an msw will do it.

  • stupid....

  • Wow this sounds so depressive. I rather be a coach :P

  • Smart.

  • i love the part about the cable television show lol

  • Has anyone realized everyone's comments on this page is longer than normal people?

  • @bombertaylor

All comments have to be approved first.

  • This is hilarious, though sad... The moment find out you're pursuing a degree in psychology, or that you're a psychologist, they're terrified you're going to psychoanalyze them, that or you're crazy.

  • This is perfect!

  • The fact of the matter is psychology is one of the most rewarding careers out there. One is constantly learning new things relevant to one's life and two, being a clinical psychologist enables one to help people who are desperately in need (rather this be helping others lead better lives or solving problems they have). Can this be achieve as a researcher, the alternative route in psychology? no!

  • @xEternalx Did you listen to the video?

What people are you going to help? And how are you going to help them?

Most treatment given to the mentally ill comes in the form of pills. As a Clinical Psychologist you have no ability to treat them with pills, and for the severely debilitating psychoses that result in hospitalization, therapy won't help. If you want to give therapy to help people you definitely don't need to try and become a Clinical Psychologist.

  • @xEternalx are you a clinical psych?

  • this sounds worse than law school

  • This is not much different than any other career choice for women. Any highly educated woman is going to have a hard time finding a relationship because by the time she starts her career, most of the men in her age group will already be married, have a girlfriend, etc. One thing I have found though is no matter what your goal is, someone will always be there to tell you how to do it or how hard it is and how impossible it will be or you to reach it. HATERS!! Don't listen to them.

  • This is depressing..

  • I'll admit, as a junior psychology major seriously considering getting my Ph.D. in clinical psych, I found this video pretty funny and somewhat helpful in deciding whether or not to got to grad school. It demonstrates some of the wrong reasons to pursue a Ph.D. such as feeling proud of yourself and wanting people to call you "Doctor". You really should have a true desire to help those in need in order to succeed in clinical psychology.

  • @LilPirateMiss

Consider the return on investment before you take out loans for your degrees. 200k in student loans is not worth it for a Psychological doctorate.

  • So true!

  • Okay, at the end everything gets more clear, that is the best part of this video :) Woman in Blue is so frustrated woman, it is quite clear why she speaks only about negative sides.

If you want excuse why not to get PhD in Clinical Psychology, this is right way to go. But, if this is what you really want (Really), than get to the grind, and benefits will outweigh all hard stuff, far beyond what she said here ;)

  • Precisely why I didn't continue with Psychology.

  • @michaeldelmonte Excellent Decision!!!

  • I am married, have a wonderful child, 2 dogs and a house. I like what I do. However if I would have relied on my income, it would have been difficult to have the kind of lifestyle that we have. When it comes to relatinships, it is "work" no matter what your profession is.

  • It's been my experience that therapists and psychologists are just nutjobs with a degree.

  • At least I'm engaged and I have a dog. 3 more years until people can call me doctor!! :-D

  • Why didn't I do medicine instead of a clin psych PhD?

I could have been rich and respected by all.

  • This really cleared some things out for me about what to do about my education, since I'm at a cross roads with my education.

  • If we would follow these videos, we should better work at the local pub the whole life. Thanks God there are professors and professionals who are happy about their job. Try to work as a laborer a few months, then you will stop complaining.

  • I too have had many of these experiences! Especially the dating challenges faced by women with more education than 99% of men.... so true!

But also all of the rules and the non-high salary! Oh and yes on the supervision thing too!

  • I too have had many of these experiences! Especially the dating challenges faced by women with more education than 99% of men.... so true!

But also all of the rules and the non-high salary!

  • This video is true on many levels. If you are considering a Ph.D. don't lose hope! If you are planning to provide counseling ONLY, then you may be getting into the wrong field, as services are cheaper with master's level folk and it will be harder for PhDs to charge $100+/hr like they did in yesteryear.

DO NOT forget about assessments (forensic, neuro, IQ, personality) that can provide a serious source of income. Also expert testimony usually goes to PhDs and not MAs.

    I love this gig!

  • Don't forget to mention "boarding" to potential psychologists. It's a kind of guild mentality--now some boards are striving to limit insurance reimbursement to clinicians who are hopping through board hoops (and paying money to do so).

  • Hilarious. "My friends say I give really good advice..." But in truth if you're a good businesswoman you'll make money. Just set up shop in an affluent area and then help the poor once you're more established.

  • You also have to consider that most major insurance companies discriminate against recently licensed psychologists, and create all sorts of deterrants for getting on their panels. Most of them have a clause of waiting at least two years and/or require you to include prescribers as part of your practice. Thank goodness for business and marketing opportunities...meetup groups....social media..etc. etc.

  • AHHH HAHA, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

  • I'm doing a Dpsych in Australia and get paid to do it, with zero tuition fees. This is pretty normal in australia. There is also a national shortage of psychologists since the government started rebating $120 per session. i.e. if you charge $200 an hour your client is only out of pocket by $80.

looks like the situation is different in the U.S.

  • @anotherlookmedia

Yes, in the US, graduate school is BIG business.

  • @anotherlookmedia Actually most legitimate PhD programs in the US cover tuition with additional stipends. I don't know how anybody racks up $200,000 in student loans going to a real PhD program as someone suggested here. Perhaps people are including their undergrad loans.

  • @anotherlookmedia

Wow, what uni are you studying through? Most of us here in Queensland paid a lot of money to obtain a doctorate.

  • @anotherlookmedia

It depends. There are some specialty fields in psychology that have a shortage in psychologists and they will pay for tuition. Also, some post-doctorate fellowships, including working for the government/military, will reimburse a portion/all tuition depending on qualifications and experience. However, getting those positions are highly competitive.

  • OMG this video made me laugh so hard! And yet, the sad thing is I had those canned reasons to get a PhD till I realized hey I have something I want to research. I could give a crap less about the other stuff but this video is a good reminder of why you really WANT to get in the field. It's not glamorous but it could be incredible

  • 2nd year Ph.D. student here. FML.

  • Four cats hahahha

  • pls note the comment about 'you have to be extra nice because ppl will think you are crazy'

  • @anand604

people think we are ALL crazy!

  • This is too true -- the funny thing is that she left out only one thing -- you must be extra-extra nice to other psychologists so that they don't diagnose you with Axis 2/Cluster B disorders.

  • If you go to a large research university, you can get your PhD tuition waved and if you are a TA/RA concurrently, you can get a monthly stipend. I'm not saving a lot of money, but I'm not accruing any debt either. I agree that this seems like a better description of PsyD than PhD; this video didn't mention research once.

  • @FirstAnathema It actually mentioned it briefly during the "you are too busy to find a boyfriend" part. She mentioned doing research as one of the things that would take up too much of your time

  • Did I just meet you? The clinical Psych from UI, in the Indianapolis Airport? If so, describe me and I'll give you a way to get in touch. I'm sorry I didn't ask you for your contact info.

  • @aehohenbri Not me! :)

  • "if you are a clinical psychologist, people think you're crazy. you have always to be extra nice so that people will not think you're crazy."

    THAT IS SO TRUE!!

  • @Ebolav35 - wow in regards to your comment regarding PsyD programs. I have a PsyD and I do not feel that I came from a diploma mill. I think I received a great education and now I am a psychologist on an Army base working with soldiers returning from combat. Psychologists thrive with open minds without judgment and stereotyping. Not all PhDs come from good schools with great educations and good applicants. There is good and bad in both degrees.

  • @timariposa I ran out of room to elaborate-it's not all PsyD programs are bad, it's that most questionable programs that accept too many students, charge too much per credit hour, offer little non-loan funding, and little chance of working at top-tier internship/post-doc sites, happen to be PsyD programs. This was obviously not initially what was intended with regards to the initial distinction between PhD and PsyD, but this is very much what it has turned into in many places around the country

  • this video bothers me because i hate the mentality that some people have. In a way that they encourage people to settle for mediocrity and not pursue higher goals.

  • As a licensed clinical counselor and certified coach - this tickled my funny bone...LOL!!!!

  • This illustrates why you should go to a PhD program that only accepts a handful of students each year. In addition to the higher caliber of the program, having a small # of entrants allows them to receive funding.

I earned a PhD from a top tier program, and had guaranteed funding throughout. I'm 32, have a large house and very little debt.

Don't enroll in a PsyD diploma-mill school from a "professional" school of psychology-they are profit driven, and accept questionable applicants

  • So accurate it's actually not funny. I mean, it's actually just plain old informative. I tell students who ask me what to do to go medical school! I figure, if they really want it after that, they know what they're in for. Me, I'm glad I have a job I love and find interesting and rewarding.

  • I'm getting my doctorate in Clinical Psych in 5 months and this is so true that Ik don't know if I should laugh or cry! Great job!

  • This should probably be called "So you want a Psy.D." I've found my Ph.D. so far rewarding, and didn't choose this path for a title....

  • @deanaches1 did you do it with arts or science as in ba psych or bsc psych ..just asking.

  • totally hilarious. If anything (and unfortunately) this underestimated my age, amount of student loan debt and stress that I incurred during the process. but still a funny and eerily accurate snapshot! (aghhh should've been a life coach: )

  • epic.

  • Maybe this video is intended to discourage people from entering a profession that does not reduce our enormous trade deficit. I wonder how many clinical psychologists the Chinese are putting out yearly versus engineers...

  • Ahhhh the realities of achieveing a PhD :D This applies so incredibly to law school too. Most lawyers including my ex thought when they get their law dgeree it was all gravy. All these facts plus many more came and kicked her in her butt. You have to want this pretty bad lol! I has mah masters so far, and will be going into research.

  • crap i already started my masters... oh well I guess i'll finish that and move on to something else ha

  • your mother will cry and ask you why you did not become a real doctor. LOLOL

  • Amazing!!!

  • This video is almost perfect, except that it leaves out the part about thousands of students flying all over the country (at their expense, not the sites requring the interviews) to apply for mandatory pre-doctoral internships that only two-thirds of the applicants will get for poverty level pay. Oh, and they have to do the same thing for postdoc the next year, and a job the year after that.

  • @MrDrBrain79 Very true, lol! I think I repressed those parts. Thanks.

  • @iPsychDoc78 Having just finished the whole stupid applying, interviewing and ranking process, I wholeheartedly concur! Nicely done!
