It boggles my mind that the audience isn't just going ape shit over how amazing they are. If, by some act of time travel, I was in that audience I would be up the front dancing and generally basking in their awesomeness.
The band I was in did a gig where we supported these guys. We were utterly knocked out, we'd heard nothing like it before. Frank Allen was still with them then on bass and Dave Wendells on guitar. Frank left to join the Searchers and Dave to Lulu's Luvvers.
I guess that this is about the only way there is to find out how Cliff and the boys sounded on stage back in those days. I really appreciated watching this video and it proves that they were the great live band that the rock encyclopedias say they were. I have collected most of their recorded output on CD and it is well worth exploring.
great sounds. the club agogo newcastle 1964 i saw em and they were explosive. he was terrific as were the rest of the band and mick burt the drummer is so puchy and tight .what a gift to have such great 'feel'.its pure joy to hear and see such a great player 'live' again. ta for the posting
I saw many great live bands when I was a student at Durham from 66 - 70 and this lot were one of the best, along with Tony Rivers and the Castaways. Chas Hodges certainly played with them and I am sure the drummer on this video is Mick Burt, who became Chas and Dave's drummer. Both these videos capture just how good they were - thanks!
The drummer is indeed Mick Burt, Chas Hodges on guitar and the organist was once dubbed the "English Little Richard", Roy Young. What a band they were.
Also note that Frank Allen (of The Searchers) was an original member of The Rebel Rousers until 1964, until he replaced Tony Jackson as bass blayer for The Searchers, and he's been there ever since!

Anyone notice the drum kit. Its none other than The Rattles. Great German band who went on to have a big hit in 1970 with The Witch....

Wow, that must have been amazing seeing them perform back in 1964! Musically, they're one of the tightest bands I've ever heard.
