Great music! Is it possible to get a CD with that recording? I've searched the Internet, but didn't find anything like this. There are many Pizzarelli CDs available, but nothing about virtuoso guitar and chamber concert like this one.
this man is obviously more than a virtuoso....the problem is the tone of that guitar..i can't appreciate it..my problem maybe but the tone of that guitar..is dead..imho
Gran bel swing e buona tecnica ne fanno di John un grande chitarrista jazz rispettando i grandi del passato. Certo che la scuola del padre si sente eccome.
When other great musicians say, this group "cooks" it makes us all understand how remarkable these guys are. What a performance by all three. I had both feet tapping and my wife said I was wearing a huge smile. Nuff said!!
but it's weird the song is titled "after you've gone" and the lyrics depict a sad song, but it sounds like "after you've gone, will be the best day of my life:D"
Can anyone post something from the John Pizzarelli concert with a big band where he performs the Beatles music. It is worth hunting down it is just fantastic. I have it only on VHS which i am unable to put on DVD,
Di Meola and John are not even attempting the same types of things so to try to compare them is nearly impossible. Both are great players in their own right and I dare say better than almost anyone who is going to be posting on YT. Great playing all around very hip stuff. Sounds old school with a new school flavor...just awesome.
@jazzman3071 I get so tired of people praising one musician but feel the need to trash another. Both John P and Al D are great guitarists who play in very different styles. Pizzarelli doesn't get the acclaim he deserves - I think his importance won't be truly understood until "After he's gone." To those who say that Di Meola can only shred - listen to him on Friday night in San Francisco with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin - Al is amazing.
Nicely done John. One of the better versions of this song I've heard....and I've heard alot. LOL Serious, their phrasing and time changes are superbly executed.

Could a father be more blessed than his sons work together...yes...I am my brothers' keeper...and my sons are just beginning to work well...when they aren't 9 2 5in'...enjoy.
Ray Kennedy. I'm from St.Louis grew up with those cats as an influence. Ray and Tom kennedy and Dave Weckl. They've been friends since they were youngins'. They are all freaks of nature. And all just super guys.
John makes funny faces when playing :) but Scott Henderson beats every guitarist in that. anyways, i didn't comment the music, cause the quality is obvious, you know ;)
I remember reading of a guitar teacher telling his student, before you can play FAST and clean, you have to learn to play SLOW and clean. Classic example right here. Ninth chords 'n sixth chords 'n octaves, et al., it's all a blur!! Awesome playing, JP!!!
Al DiMeola?? This actually has some feeling, phrasing, and more than just up and down scales. Sorry, just never got the "greatness" of Di Meola. I guess that goes back to
Namsaj61's comment about assholes, now doesn't it? :-)
Great video! I can only dream of playing like that. The confidence alone is amazing.
@ homeslice1479: You're right, his playing isn't like Di Meola's... It's much better.
Di Meola is one of those players who can't phrase anything but still people hold him in such high regard because he can "shred." Just remember it's what you play that matters -- NOT how fast you play it.
@darkoanton5 Agreed, there isn't much bad you can say about Di Meola. Especially that he only shreds. His phrasing is second to none, and I've seen him live, and you can see the passion in his music when he plays. To say it's simply "shredding" is ignorant in my opinion.
@JamesIsMyNamo Ever listen probably has a style preference and that's understandable. I can't see why anyone would trash Di Meola. You can find many examples where it's not shredding. My favorite recording of his is Soaring Through A dream from 1984. But, I have no problem with Race With A devil On A Spanish Highway either. I'm not criticizing Pizzarelli but Di Meola writes most of his own music. Both exist in my guitar world.
@JamesIsMyNamo I fully agree. Anyone who trashes DiMeola hasn't a clue what they're talking about. You don't play with the likes of Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, John McLaughlin, etc... if you can't phrase.
@darkoanton5 Al DiMeola is an enterprise, that's why que plays with Corea, Clark, McLaughling, etc. He's not a real jazz guitarrist/musician. I'not saying he sucks, but he's not a jazz musician
@FuchsFran Are you saying Al Di Meola is not a jazz musician or John Pizzarelli. Either way, you're completely nuts. Jazz is just not swing music. Any other guitarist who are classified a s jazz that you would like to tell us otherwise. Di Meola has said he's a Latin player first and a jazz player second..
@konicki This is the kind of comment that makes me sad, very very sad. John Pizz Is the man, he's a genius is in reharmonization...but come on man, thats no reason to make an insecure insult about a musician who's just as important in his own genre. And honestly man, I prefer dimeola's solo phrasing. JP can reharmonize, reimagine, and reinvent any song, which is his true genius. No need to be immature and insult a musician with a little more technical focus.
Not the biggest fan of his voice but WOW that's some impressive guitar playing. Very fast and technical but still mostly very tasteful. Not quite like di Meola but still awesome.
well, your "empession" is wrong. I have seen John Pizzarelli and his father Bucky more than once, and, unless your name is Joe Pass, you couldn't even stand in the same room with them. Remember "fun" ? that's what music should be, not just for the players....
