  • :(( too much joking, wasting my time, btw nice tutorial...

  • whats the difference between A flat and A flat major

  • @DamanArora1209 you mean A flat minor and A flat Major?

  • @Gaziermo yes

  • Thanks for taking the time to make these. You're a great teacher!

  • the circle of 5ths draw here is different from the one on Wikipedia and other places I've looked... WHY ?

  • @DongWork4Yuda It looks the same to me..... I think (if I understand correctly) that Andrew has added an extra outer circle to show which flats relate to the relevant scale(ie. in wikipedia's circle the scale of Eb has 3b's in it. Andrew has kindly written in the outer circle showing that in the scale of Eb we have Ab,Eb,Bb) Wiki just states the number of flats or sharps, Andrew has drawn them out for us

  • if you dont get it (like i didnt) try learning some simple sheet music and play it by heart, you will then understand the need of Circle of Fifths: it just makes life simplier ;)

  • haha hey LYP! your funny!

  • If you indeed read out loud the 'father Charles' phrase, thumbs up!!

  • I was taught Fat Cats Go Dine At Ed Browns

  • You're amazing for doing this for free, it's so helpful, thanks SO much!

  • 5:18 LOL

  • andrew, thank you so much for these lessons, i feel that i'm learning piano and not just memorizing scales, i really feel that i'm getting better and better!

thank you so much again, this lesson is pretty tricky but i think i got it ;)

thank you and sorry about my english :)

  • OK. I"m confused... where is Cb on the keyboard. and I'm assuming F is E sharp. but why not just say F. And why is this Circle of fifths different from one I downloaded off Bing? Yours seems to have more around it.

  • i FINALLY UNDERSTOOD THIS xD thanks a lot! best music theory teacher ever

  • ..its funny how he says...."dont worry..its very simple" ....helloo@!!! LOL

  • I don't get it.. I'll watch it again tomorrow!

  • LOL. this. is. difficult.

But, it'll only take some more time to understand and learn it than the others I guess.

  • The only unfortunate part about these videos is that I've already learned all the music theory from when I played tuba lol

But still, very well done. I'm glad I found this

Also, there's "Fat Cats Go Down Alleys Eating Burgers"

"Better Eat Another Dozen Greasy Chicken Fingers"

  • The only unfortunate part about these videos is that I've already learned all the music theory from when I played tuba lol

But still, very well done. I'm glad I found this

  • im lost

  • THANK YOU!!! FINALLY someone explains it creatively :D

  • In the cirrrrclleeee, the circle of fifths!

  • THIS EPISODE IS DIFFICULT D:

  • I suggest if you could make the board and the drawing bigger while explaining thank you :D

  • I find it harder to understand this circle.

  • I have a better understanding of this thanks to you.

  • i have a question:

A natural minor scale has no flats

This means that any natural minor scale doesn't has flats?

  • @bboyfabolous1994 wrong! it goes in same intervals as major (0+2+2+1+2+2+2) this is how i write them...

  • @bboyfabolous1994 oops, i failed. its 0+2+1+2+2+1+2 semitones

  • you are one helpful guy lol i dont know what i would do without you haah

  • whats Tone & Semi Tone?

  • @screamcriistal123 a semi tone is a half note. fx from C to C#. a tone is just one note. Fx. from D to E

  • I cant hear you!!! grrr!!!

  • LEARN PIANO

    easypianolessons.toppianocourses. com/

This website has great piano lessons which worked for me.

  • @ColinMcDonaldGrant thanks for that link. i'll check it out =]

  • So I could use this as a guide to compose music let's say if I compose a 4 chord progression melody I'll know which chord I can jump to by using the circle of fifths how cool is that :-)

  • This is GENIUS!!! :D I understand! You are amazing!! :DDDD

    <3 Thank you!

  • i dont get it......talk louder

  • if people are having a hard time hearing him do the following steps:

    1) right click speaker in bottom right of screen.

    2)click sounds

    3)go to playback tab.

    4)click on speakers (double click)

5)it should take you to speaker properties

    6) go to enchancements

    7)check the box loudness equalization

    8) now you can enjoy the videos even more :)

THUMBS UP SO PEOPLE CAN SEE!

  • @shmaol Thank You!

  • Muy buenos los videos, Saludos desde panama!

  • Thumbs down, actually, cause it's only your computer that has this particular setting.

  • @shmaol thanks !!!

  • @shmaol Like a boss. thanks

  • i am kinda used to the picture on the end -.-

  • okay WUT?....im totally lost!!

  • Thank you so much for explaining this to me. T_T I was so confused when my teacher tried to explain why certain scales had certain sharps/flats.

  • AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! What ... Minor, Major... i´m totally out

  • hey Andrew, I tend to agree to comments that this is actually first video of the series where I kindof lost you :( I hope to get back on track in the next videos, but I think you can improve this by adding some part of real piano play to the appropriate scales, would make more sense imho. anyway, thanks for what you doin', man, much appreciate :)

  • E-D-C at the end on the piano... MGS2 Theme!

Awesome stuff, onward, to lesson 10! :D

  • i like ur spikes than ur teaching... :P....actually i have understood the cirle of fifths but i felt u cud explain it better by saying that all these notes are major fifth of the p[previous one......

  • i like ur spikes than ur teaching... :P

  • low volume can't understand and I have to rewind it

  • I don't know why, it may be youtube, but the video seems to be stopping at about 9:38. It also doesn't let me progress any further through the video. Up until now the videos have been extremely helpful though. Oh well on to the next video. I'm still going to have to watch them all again to pound it into my brain. Finally there is something worth while on youtube, Thank you!

  • My Band teacher uses Fat Cows Graze Down At Edwards Barn...either way, it really helps me remember! :)

  • Like this comment if you were repeating back to Andrew out loud!

  • Look for How to Memorize All 12 Keys of Music In One Hour While Doing Laundry

that's a very interesting blog article I found about how to use the circle to memorize all 12 scales. After reading this I finally understood the way flats and sharps are used. It has greatly helped me to memorize the chords.

  • @mdinka can you please send me the link? I found just bogus sites. Thank you very much!

  • Honestly, I just imagine "Father Charles" riding on a dragon. And he then dies for the honor of his kings in battle. Buuuuuut, I get better at understanding music in turn, so some good did come out of his sacrifice.

  • Lypur !! Thank you soo much for this! I have and uni exam (well basics) about key signatures, chords, intervals, scales, harmonics and so on....

Compared to the booklets and other readings for this theoritical part you rock!!

I threw away the crappy book and finally got it with this video !!!

    Thank you!!!!!

  • When you asked "Do you understand?" it felt as if you were talking directly to me and I just nodded and laughed at myself Gud job! Haha.

  • Comment removed

  • when your making the second ring on sharps how do I know where to start FCGDAEB? like in Gmaj, F# goes above it why not start on the C at the 12 o clock postition?

  • I've been playing flute for seven years and I never understood the circle of fifths until now. Kind of sad, really... Thank you so much. These lessons really are helping me play piano, which is something I've wanted to do since I was five(:

  • when he sizz the Circle of fifths i think am take a magic class

  • This is so much better than learning from some snooty old guy or something.

  • this guy is great for putting up all of these videos for free. super great quality, id pay $ for this guy

  • Would be great if the camera was zoomed in a little more or you wrote larger so we don't have to zoom ourselves closer to the computer screen or be forced to watch it in full screen.

  • How can you see us in the next video?

  • @FishingtonBurpPuzzle Maybe he's Santa Claus in complete desguise?

  • I DONT UNDERSTAND IT. CAN U PLAY THAT ?U SOULD DEMONSTRAITE IT ON PIANO.

  • hey what's withe Cb and E#, sorry I wasn't listening carefully (?)

  • Looll at u getting carried away with the charles's father hahah love your personality makes me enjoy watching the videos more so I learn. The circle of fifths is one of the things I have had more trouble memorising I kinda get it but thanks for the vid it has helped :)

  • Dear Andrew, Thank you so much for everything that it takes, doing all these lessons...I don't have you e-mail, so, I have to talk my doubts over here... I've been folowing your lessons every day one. But this one, I'm having dificulties understanding how am I going to use it. can you try to explain me better or should I just watch the next videos?

  • @i08dionisio :) I'd just go to the next video.

  • I don't really understand the minors.. Are those minors in natural? harmonic? or melodic? But overall is pretty much straight forward.. Thank you so much

  • To everyone who doesn't understand this circle of fifths thing, my advice would be to re-watch the video over again, cause...that's what I'm about to do. lol I lost him after the first 15 minutes. Great videos though Lypur, I really appreciate it. I'm definately gonna re-watch this until I do get it. Thanks for making these.

  • @hggh93 and what's wrong with being homosexual? It's a free world

  • @creamiorange People's moral beliefs clearly interferes with their conceptual thought, so despite actuality, I wouldn't really expect a concise and satisfactory answer to your question.

  • great videos....terriable attention span

  • theres beauty in brevity

  • if you put bottle instead of battle you make him an alcoholic.

  • @tneprescintr LOL! You're right! We couldn't teach that to kids though...it wouldn't be right.

  • @Lypur yeah... pity... =P

love your vids btw. I'm actually studying singing and piano classes are very helpful.

  • @Lypur But a battle with killing people is all good? ;)

  • Father Christmas Gave Dad An Electric Blanket!

Blanket Exploded And Dad Got Cold Feet!

Thank you so much for spending your time to help tech people this beautiful thing we call music. You are very much appreciated :)

  • It is rather comical to look at the view counts for each of his lessons. Lots of quitters!

  • So is knowing the scales important if we want to play? cuz i kinda get it kinda dont...

  • Comment removed

  • Hi

I learnt that there is always a semitone between the 3rd & 4th key and the 7th & 8th key of a scale starting with the key the scale is in (ascending). Descending the semitones are between the 1st & 2nd keys and the 5th & 6th, this may be easier to remember! However, note that Andrew also does a series of lessons on theory. Thank you so much for your free lessons Andrew. Keep up the good work.

  • How do I get my hair like that?

  • There is a much easier way to memorize the circle of fifths than Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle! All you do is B E A D like the word bead, and then Great Cats Fight! so you would have B E A D Great Cats Fight!!! So much easier!

  • thanks bro

  • One thing you might have meant to mention is that in the circle of 5ths if you center on say a key, like C you have F before it and G after it or so on the circle you locate the c and see F C G. The one before it (in this case F) is always C's 4th the one after it is always that key's 5th.

    C D E F G A B D E F G A B C

    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 OR 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

    Just have to remember to # or b the 4th & 5th's

  • dude, im about to have a quiz over this at 330 for my music theory class. Im a drummer, so this whole aspect of piano is entirely new to me. i was freaking out all day about not knowing how to draw the circle. thanks to ur phrase Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle, ive got it down! hahaha. this really helped a lot. thank you

  • Fantastic, thank you!

  • zZzz think coz i nidda listen very carefully to catch his accent and understand, and its worst when its not loud enough. i nid to strain my ears so badly =X

but still, i'll juz watch this video a few more times juz to make surei really get it and understand =) thks. and even though its still kinda soft, its way better compare to ur first few old videos. thks alot !

  • @twistluv

That's weird, I can hear his vids perfectly on my speakers, and headphones. Both at home and at work. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's something on your end, because my volume is on medium low and it all comes through perfectly clear still.

  • 23:00 WIN XD

  • i love you.

  • To all you learners if you are learnin like me then good luck with that and to all you ASSHOLES who leave stupid comments this is simply not for you so why dont you lot jst FUCK OFF SOMEWHERE else on the internet and stick to your Porno... Andrew i thank you from the bottom of my heart and coz now i know how to play alittle piano its coz you are behind it mate so thank you once again for your great effort Bless

  • you are AWESOOOOOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you don't know how this just helped me. Thank you soooooooo much.

    can someone please explain?

  • 23: 01 epic :D

  • for choir its

Frank Can Go Down And Eat Breakfast!

and Bill Eats And Drinks Good Clean Food :]

  • love trust truth and courage set you free

  • Your a great Teacher:)

  • in violin we say:Fat cats go down alleys eating birds. But it won't make sense when you say it backwards

  • @8108angela Birds eating alleys ;p lol

  • Thank you so much.

I finally understand the circle of fifths and its relationship with major and minor scales. You really explained this so well, without assuming I get you from the start. Thanks again!

  • You wouldn't happen to know how a accidental for a natural would be indicated???

    That puzzles me.

  • thank you

  • Thank you mr Lypur for taking the time out, ur jokes are crap but i still find them funny (if that makes sense)

anyway you videos are much appreciated and i have learnt so much, thank you

  • What did he mean by saying there's 7 sharps at 8:58? The only sharp I can see later on at 11:50 are F#M & C#M? And that's only 2; not 7!!!!!!!!

  • R the minors in the Circle of 5ths Natural?

  • i should've made a bigger circle...

  • You Are The Most Amazinq Teacher Ever.....(: Thank You Soo Much For Explaininq All This Soooo Well(((:

  • Comment removed

  • No this isn't all that easy and I couldn't have learned it myself....maybe I am just extremely slow but this is the third time I watched the video and still don't get it. Man.....ok...here I go again

  • That wasn't 5 seconds! LMFAO. I was about to hit PrtSc and then it moved xP But it's okay, that's what pause is for " ll ".

  • ook im confused about the circle fifths on how to apply the info in order to read the nottes for a song. just to be sure say i use c sharp major, does that mean ill have to use f,c,g,d,a,e,and b sharp?? for that major?

  • @starter497 C♯, D♯, E♯, F♯, G♯, A♯, and B♯. If it's a c scale or any other scale you have start on that scale that's why it's called a c Sharp Major. Say for instance for F - Sharp Major you will initially start on F-Sharp ie F♯, G♯, A♯, B, C♯, D♯, and E♯. Hope you understand.

  • This is brilliant :D THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Great ! So thankful for your video's..

  • WTF!!!Andrew all ur lessons have been great but this is like crazy. I didn't get it at all. It's not u it's me.

  • @Soccermaniac3555 I am having the same problem!

  • any1 else see a piano playing ethan hawke? He just kinda looks like him is all I'm sayin.

  • @dooovde nah!!!!!!! he looks like sherminator from american pie! lol!!!!!!!!!! no offence dude!

  • I also learned it as Father Carol Goes Down And Eats Breakfast

  • I didn't understand major and minors can some1 explain it 2 me?

  • Comment removed

  • Can anybody explain to me why they also call it a circle o "fourths"?

  • ok so i know this must hav somthing to do with playing the piano becaus why ls would h b tlling us all this. i just cant undrstand what it has to do with playing the piano. but i'll keep watching the rest of the lessons and hope it all makes sens

  • @ConicalRamirez this is about reading and writing music so you can play songs on a piano.

this is musical theory instead of practical music.

  • @ConicalRamirez I was going to ask how you are going along with this but this comment was from one month ago saying you didnt know what was kinda going on, and i am a bit lost myself. If i dont know how to play how is this helping? Sadly outdated :( So if im at the point where you were 1 month ago, are you still learning? Have you gotten a lot better? Thanks for feedback :)

  • @xLosTxCauSe Hi, to tell you the truth I am quite embarrassed to say that I only watched a couple more lessons after this one and I havent watched one since. although your message has put it back in my head so i will really try to start up again as i would love so much to get through the whole course

  • Is a minor always played on the left hand while the majors are on the right?

  • Too Low.

  • Just to be clear, the "minor" keys in the center would technically be considered the natural minor, right?

  • Thank you, Andrew, for making the circle easier to work with. You are a very good teacher.

  • cant see the board.

  • I been lost since video 6

  • me too xD

  • thanks a lot for the lesson..

  • ahhhh!!!! I didn't get it!!

  • Another phrase to help remember the Circle of Fifths is

"God Destroyed All Earth By Floods

For Being Evil And Denying God."

    G D A E B F# is the order key signatures with sharps.

F Bb Eb Ab Db Gb is the order for key signatures with flats.

You're phrase "Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle" is useful too. :]

I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm going to take AP Music Theory next year.

You're videos are great and very helpful (and entertaining :D).

    Thanks for posting. :)

  • Andrew, you're a bit idiotic XD... but which musician isn't? :D.... I like you and you're lessons are great, thanks :)

  • I think the word your looking for would be "eccentric", not "idiotic". There is absolutely nothing "idiotic" about his lessons in anyway. If anything I think Andrew is so creative with his lessons that he makes the impossible seem possible.

  • 6:48

  • Excellent lesson Andrew. Very useful and valuable.

Question: can you explain a simple way to put this knowledge into practice. I find instant application of information helps to solidify the concept in the students mind... the student here being me. :)

    Thanks again.

  • ok i havent been lossed in any lesson, this is a first, i need to go back as well

  • i love ur lessons:) thank u for teaching me SO MUCH that my teacher didnt bother to teach <3

  • Andrew is giving of his time freely. If you don't like his vids.........don't watch.

  • @flyingporcupine2

It's 5:13am EST don't you have kindergarten in few hours? From the level of your remarks you must have.

Violetsky0036 is right. If you don't like the vids, don't watch them, or else keep your sophomoric comments to yourself.

Let me speak in your language for a moment and then maybe you'll understand. OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES, EVERYBODY HAS ONE AND YOUR OPINION STINKS JUST AS BAD.

You definitely couldn't do any better.

  • Is the reason that both these scales are written on top of each other because they are meant to be played at the same time?

  • @pugh7755 its bad to reply with 'you definitely cant do any better', as it shud be expected that the guy doing the job does it well - but anyway, that guy's a troll, so ignore him, LYPUR IS AWESUM :D

  • Thanks, man! You´re very generous.

  • Major pentatonic scale = One construction takes five consecutive pitches from the circle of fifths; starting on C, these are C, G, D, A, and E

  • "Fat cats get down at Ernie's bar" worked better for me. Cause it made me think of cats playing music at a jazz night club. So I immediately associated that phrase with music.

  • Father, Charles, Goes, Down, And, Ends, Battle, Funeral, Celebration or Ceremony,

    hahahahs.....

  • For the people that can't get this, I suggest to your learn your scale first, preferably all 12 major scale: both major and minor scale. Once you know all 12 major scale you'll be able to understand this music theory. I hope that helps. :)

  • Thanks :D

  • You're welcome. ^-^

  • Your welcome. ^_^

  • ahh sky captain charlesis dead hah

that made so hard to forget

  • Thank you Andrew, I really am learning a lot about Pianos. I actually play on the keyboard...

  • How I love my name? Can you guess?

Lol i think the awnsers ar going to be harsh

  • I wonder if when we practice minor scales it is preferable to practice and learn all three types of minor scale, or only harmonic minor. Maybe I missed what he said. Any suggestions?
