i noticed Dweezil dubbing this song on stage but the low brash voice from the cigs that his father had can not be dubbed even by his son, but then if his son would break out of the 'mold' and move to new ground there could be some intense music to be heard .. I figure that shadow will always be there for him ,, sad.
wow, this is the "Just Another Band from LA" live recording , very cool, one of my favorite LP's of all time, still have the CD, the album is long gone, too bad
does anyone know where a place where they have billy the mountain and this song to download from? my dad really wants them but torrent..limewire..itunes..and others dnt have it. =/
At least Zappa did one thing well he preserved the music. I would love more video but the music he salvaged and digitized. He broke new ground just in that alone
Great vid, I was under the impression Zappa was libertarian neither for or against drugs . But kooky drug heads that's another story we always seam two out ourselves and that's not very individualistic .
You sent your answer to me OneEyeProductions, about this song. Your suggested answer to my post was taken from a website called "Zappa wiki jawaka. Not very original, hmm? You are referring to Frank Zappa you see. As a former resident of the "Greater Inland Empire" and have had many a great steering wheel slapping session listening to Zappa's skewering of social issues. I'm no newcomer to "The Zappa Era"! As if "Just Another Bnad From L.A." album didn't address incest with "Magdalena" ? ZAPPA!!
And I misled those with the term Zig Alert. I should have posted Sig Alert. Sig Sigmon...thanks for the lasting traffic alert term that seems to be grounded for many decades to come. We have a SigAlert!!
Frank Zappa was indeed anti-drug! But to be pointed, you still would have had to be born/raised/lived in the southern California area and in particular, the L.A. area to have been able to appreciate the cander the Zappa and the Mothers of Invention delivered. George Putnam....row over in your grave!! You do know who George Putnam was! That Right wing bastard that he was!! May he and Bonzo Reagan roast in hell!!
Call Any Vegetable. Now...were "The Mothers" talk'n about some good smoke? Or was it more of a sexual thing? "Standing there shiney and proud by your side...holding your joint while your neigbors decide" And besides...unless you were born and raised in or around L.A....much of this album was a mystery to outsiders. By outsiders...even people from northern California wouldn't have a clue as to why this recording at UCLA was such a smash with South Landers of the Inland Empire. Zig alert anyone?!
Its always nice to see footage of Zappa live but the video and audio don't match. The audio is from Just Another Band in L.A. which was a concert in LA the video according to the author is from a concert in Amsterdam. Could you load this with the original audio?
You forget The Turtles were into satire from the beginning- Do you remember 'Santa & the Sidewalk Surfer'? And don't forget their series of recordings (while on acid) as The Rhythm Butchers? I am certainly not trying to take away any credit from Frank (the man is simply a genius) but you need to be more open to the talents of Flo & Eddie as well. By the way, I saw them on their first tour after they left The Mothers, great show with Don Preston, Ansley Dunbar, etc.
Too little of The Mothers exist on video- can you imagine a complete video of Billy the Mountain?? I was always a big fan of the original Mothers, but the Flo & Eddie years were also very exciting...their satire was a perfect fit with Frank.
Their satire? While you could say F&E added their own personal touch to the 70-71 edition of the Mothers, I think most (though not all, as Kaylan wrote some lyrics like "Magdalena") of the lyrics and conceptions were Frank's. F&E sang Frank's stuff. They were members of an ultra-clean boy band before. The legend goes that F&E were happy to work with Frank because they wanted to get rid of the clean-cut image of their Turtles era.
Is the real Mothers for you the original (1965-9) Mothers? You may not like the later bands, but Mothers pretty much was the name of Zappa's backing bands up to 1976. That includes the Flo & Eddie band (1970-71), the Roxy band (1973-74) and the later lineups up to 1976 when FZ dropped the MOI handle for good.
Of course I'm talking about the original Mothers.I know he had many incarnations of " The Mothers" as a touring group.I'm not trying to split hairs here, and mean no offense. But come on,the original Mothers are the shit.
Of course the original Mothers were great, but many later incarnations are written off, because they were too different from the first MOI. A very pervasive school of thought (not saying that you represent it) is that Zappa was great until he disbanded the Mothers, and then after 1970 he got cynical and sold out or something. Most certainly not true. Ok, Flo&Eddie band was a step down, but the 1973-74 group was one of his best post-sixties bands. "Roxy" is one of my favorite Zappa albums.
is really true he never did any drugs, he alone shows it wasn't just the awareness the heightend the movements of the 60's. spaced to this one many times in the past.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
but one thing he did have an addiction to was sex. it is known that he was a man who was a nymphomaniac..... now as a man myself, i find that insane...i love sex more than anything..and im not a nymphomaniac..idk if this is true but he was rumoured to have upwards of 15 sexual partners daily.
God damn we need more FLO AND EDDIE on youtube!!!! Comon Zappa freaks SOMONE HAS THE HOLY GRAIL of zappa footage and is holding out..And im not talkin bout the Family.God knows you could spend a lifetime in "The Vault"

sorry, but Mr. Zappa was very anti drug. He did enjoy an occasional beer, however. The sexual thing would be more understandable.

Flo and Eddie had their moments, but overall they aren't my favorite morph of the Mothers. Anything pre-F&E is the Mothers of Invention.

The Mothers pretty much died with "Apostrophe" in 1974. The promotors might have used the "Mothers" but everyone knew it was Zappa and his band.
And we loved it.
