@mramalways... I work 4 disney... I get caught wandering behind locked gates... I get fired. no thanks. Plus, who knows what animal population runs wild behind those gates. you sneak in & post your video... I'd like to see it!!!
I remember going to River Country at least three times. It was definitely superior to the current WDW water parks. It had warmth and old world charm and everywhere there were wooden structures, unlike the current parks which have way too much concrete showing. The only problem was the water was very funky as it shared a water supply with the, "Seven Seas Lagoon."
i never went as im too young to really remember it but they closed it cause florida law states natural bodies of water cant be used to support water parks which is why at river country on the section that borders the lake the water was murky it intrigues me now tho kind of like a mystery seems like it would be fun tho
oh and btw they still use some places like bathrooms near the locker rentals for bathrooms for the jamboree or something like that at fort wilderness
Wow, it actually appears to be unmodified, all of the fake rocks are still there and don't appear to have aged badly. It appears that all they did was put a fence up and cut off the power (you can see the non-working slides)
I visited this park as a kid in 1983, it was ok, in comparison to new water parks it does not even come close, it was really more of wet playground I do miss it though good memories. I used to work for Walt Disney World as an engineer trust me when I say this, they have lost thier way, the only care they have is max profits;(park admissions & merchandise). Try contacting WDW with a complaint and see if you will ever get a response...you won't because they do not care.
Well, they never marketed Discovery Island very well, plus u had to wait at least 30min to catch the boat there (not to mention the boat trip time), and unless you bought your tickets thru AAA it wasn't worth the price. The good news about DI is that, in a sense, its island's inhabitants were relocated to Animal Kingdom and that's a much better place to see them.
Hey, Why don't you rent one of those boats and boat over to river country. I stayed in Ft. Wilderness this year as well and saw people taking boats over. I think it's a good idea. Don't you
When I have the cash to do that believe me I will and I will post it here too. Maybe I'd get the boat too close to the shore and get stuck. Darn, I'd just have to get out and explore. :)
Aww you're so sentimental, I miss it too. I don't believe they'll re-open it though. The resort pools are almost as good as this was, and if you want more you just pop over to Blizzard Beach and Typhoon lagoon. It just wouldn't be cost effective for them.
(1) possibly a DVC member only area (2) A place that's reservation only where crowd control is a main plus as you don't have that luxury at BB or TL. It works very well at Sea World's Discovery Cove (even if you don't pay for the dolphin swim).
(3) Not rotting away- at least allowing someone to use it if they'd like to or they can go to the others.
its not used at all due to a ordinance saying that all water parks had to have fresh water (river country=river water) thats why it closed. the only thing thats still used is a small shelter/ clubhouse for parties and such. but the res is in fact rotting away (if you google map it you can see the grimey stuff, and the rotting wood from the sip lines)
My hope is that they will fix it back up and re-open it. I had heard that they were going to pave it over and put in a pet hotel, but the last time I was over in that area the construction I saw was next to the golf courses, not the old River Country.
Please join me in writing to the executives at Walt Disney World to bring River Country back to life. When they see how many people want it back they would have to, at least, consider fixing the problems and re-opening the park. P.O. Box 10,000, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830-1000. Remember, this is the company that can turn nothing into something - and something is already there!!
