  • I marched 1990 with G-men and we did half the summer tour with Phantom.

    This is 1990.

I remember learning the snare solo with Kevin Hollis...who had a damn eidetic memory for everyone's solos.

    It's Rich Stadium.

Plus you can see JJ Pipitone in the Tenor line.

    89 he was Dutch Boy.

  • why is everyone sayin' this is 89? 0__o this is 1990 my friends.

  • you people are stupid. look up phantom 1989 and tell me this is the same as that. Same stadium and everything? NO it's 1990! Get it right

  • Yea dude this is 1989, you should change title.

  • @slitherzpin No, this is 1990. Notice the Buffalo on the field? That's the Bill's stadium. 1989 was at Arrowhead in KC.

  • This is 89, same year SCV did Phantom of the Opera. I've got the DVD.

  • @paulegavin

um, you might want to watch the DVD again. This is 1990. I marched with the center tenor in this video in college. He was not in the center in 1989. The snares did similar down-the-line rimshots in both '89 and '90. Maybe that's what's confusing people.

  • definately 1989 not 90

  • Comment removed

  • Are you sure this wasn't 89? OR was the solo just about the same.

  • Yep, it was definitely 1990. 100%.

  • @thejog2k ....hmm they do a similar version to da drum solo they had 1989.."New World Symphony"...and i like it better...its longer :P...im a trombonist but i still like them drums lol

  • Was Hurley the arranger at this time?

  • Officially, I think that Jeff Prosperie was the caption head, but that Hurley and Wooton still collaborated on the composition of the score, if I recall correctly.

  • Ok, thanks for the info.

It just sounds like something Hurley would write.

The mans a genius! A drumming god!!

  • Yes, Marty is a genius no matter what JessOnTheRun says.

I like being linked to him. I was giving a free clinic for these kids who had moved to my area after Katrina. One of the boy said you play just like my instructors ( a former Brother Martin student and Hurley protege'). I told him that there was a good reason for that: we had the same teacher.

  • Yea man, I took one lesson from him and learned sooo much!!

I would love to see the way you play, try posting a video :)

  • I'd like to see this whole show. To be honest, this upper battery is very much more mature than either '91 or '92. Look at the stick heights in the tenor line-- the snare line just looks like they get it! I don't care if the book is old school I like the way their hands work.

  • There is only one person in that line that wasn't a veteran. He came from the Black Nights and had been marching for years.

As for the hands, that is the way Marty plays and so it is the way we played. You can tell a PR snare player who came from that era, even today: simply the best...better than all the rest.

  • where can I see a clean version of this??

  • 1990 was a fun show from PR. This was at the end of their "Carnival of the 'Drum Corps'" segment, where they poked a little fun at their competitors. Leading into this percussion feature, the corps light-heartedly performed musical and visual motifs of SCV, Madison, Cadets and Cavaliers.

  • If JessOnTheRun doesn't like PR in the late 80s and early 90s, then why does he feel the need to watch? Just remember, Mr. Hurley is well known and respected, but JessOnTheRun is a rudimental ghost.

  • typical Hurely crap... 14 years out of date for the time. uninspiring.

  • That snare solo may be the same-old, same old, but that tenor line FREAKING SINGS. There are some bad-ass dudes in that tenor line.

  • wow..I'm surprised JessOn the Run hasn't been here to say how bad this is and how BD is better...heluva guy.

  • damn, these were the days.

  • I couldn't agree with you more!!!! 1990 was the first year I saw DCI on TV, consequently PR Dreams of Desire was the first show I ever saw. What luck!!! I firmly believe that the best years for DCI was 1990-93.....the perfect combination of tradition and innovation. I marched PR in 94, which that entire season missed the mark for me somehow (speaking of DCI as a whole) and never quite got up to par again after that.

  • Nothing wrong with '94!!!

  • they were awesome

    i love the tenors scrapes

  • 93 and 96 had some good lines, but it wasn't until Paul Rennick came in and took them the PR drumline to a whole new level of excellence. They are the standard in DCI.

  • sounds pretty nice!

btw i also noticed that the

    guard was wearing normal

    marching uniforms! wassup wit dat?

  • They are the sames ones that they wore in 1989. If you want a better idea of how they look, then type in Phantom Regiment 1989.

  • Man, I love old school drumlines, they are always AWESEOME!!!

  • thejog2k... do you have the whole show? if so, can you post it?

This is one of my favorite Phantom Shows of all time and I can't find a video of the whole show anywhere. Thanks!

  • fuckin sweet vid

  • Orlando. You must have marched with the Sky Riders. He played us a tape of his 1991 line, great stuff. Mickey came to Magic of Orlando in 1992.

  • Mad props to my homey Mickey Hartzog.

  • Mickey was an instructor of mine in 1992. Love the guy.

  • my line's director in '90 '91!!

    where you from??

  • Sup homie :) I marched with Paul in the same line.

  • Sick I see phantoms drumline has ALWAYS been a formidable force eh lol. I cant really tell the cleansliness(is that a word) but it sounds ok.
