I'm not sure why everyone seems to be a self proclaimed expert in aerospace physics, to the point where they can accurately judge size and velocity of an object with no marker in a night sky. It's really quite elementary, things appear BIGGER when they get CLOSER to you, see? Refer to the case of the cow that's FAR AWAY! (Crilly et al '97). And being as the lanterns are mainly made of paper, it's likely they move with the wind current, and incase you haven't noticed, wind can be pretty fast...

These are Chinese lanterns ,a large paper lantern that has a candle at the bottom and is basically a mini hot air balloon ,google them.They are being let off almost daily and are being mistaken for ufos all the time .
