The vet washes them.

They can claw or bite someone if they really want to get away.

For people who are allergic, washing them once a week really helps against the dust and allergens. Very often allergies come later in life when a family might already have the cat, would it be better to bathe the cat? or give the cat away and it having an uncertain future. If it's already quite old, that's certainly not ideal for the animal's health

If they've eaten something their tiny stomache can't handle, they'll stink after a visit to the facilities...

I've had to deal with the results of several digestion-related complications myself. The kittens are usually not terrified, if you speak to them in a calm voice. :)

A warm, wet towel works as a good alternative for the most hydrophobic.
