My Dad loved playing the Native American flute. He passed away a month ago and I took one of his many flutes as a keepsake. I have been staring at it and watching him on video playing Silent Night (my favorite) and decided I wanted to learn how to play that song on his flute. I picked it up a few times to a lot of emotion and squeeks. After watching your video I have hope I will be able to play Silent Night in the future and hopefully he can hear it in heaven. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Mine has 5 holes and one hole really far from the others. So it's impossible to play all 6 holes at a time, and the 6th doesn't do anything. Also, you blow into a big hole, it's not carved, I believe it might be a earlier design.
great instructional video! i found a native american flute at a thrift store really cheap, so i grabbed it without a second thought, as i have wanted one for a long time! i would love to learn to play, it is such a great instrument. i however, have a problem with my fingers being too skinny to cover the holes.
Hello. I have dearly wanted a Native american Flute for a long, long time. I got one today! I play orchestral flute and many types of whistles, but this one is very special and very beautiful, it's only a cheap one but sounds divine and I love it. Thank you so much for your very helpful video. It is different to play than all my other whistles and flutes and I am very grateful for your help.
Please, please post some more instructions soon :O)
Thank you. Your lesson is the best for beginners I have found on youTube. You teach the flute with the newbie in mind. I will be practicing my scales all day and night! Thank you.
Just a opinion-there is no easy flute.People have developed own musical styles for centuries.A flageolet type like NAF is the easiest,if focusing on producing sound. You blow into it then you get notes, not like Ney or Shakuhachi which requires years for good tones. But if you want to play even flageolet on certain style,it's not simple,as you need serious practice for playing Irish on whistle.NAF surely had more musical details which have been destroyed by the discrimination against Indians.Pity.
Thank you very much for this video. I have bought a native american flute recently and didn't know how to use it. Now I know and I will practise! Thank you again. Mitakuye Oyasin.
I bought a Native American Flute today an now I am so glad, that I found your video here!! It is as if you were sitting in front of me an it seems so easy! Thank you for sharing this! I love You Tube!! (I am living in Germany)
Although I don't play the NAF now, I believe I have a bit of musical sense. I want to buy one and play one, but aside from the musical aspect of it, I want to use it in spiritual relaxation. Therefore, I want to buy/play one in the lower register. Which key/style should I buy? My sense tells me that the longer, larger ones would serve me well. Thanks in advance for the information.
Your video is a great launching point when you are trying to learn this lovely instrument. I just came back from hiking in America and I purchased my first flute in California. It's terrible (only 25 us dollars) but still is beautiful to the ears. When I arrived back in Scotland, my mates and I can't get enough of playing the flute. Thank you so much for the video. The Native American cultures of the Americas are truly bewitching. We admire them from all the way over in Scotland. Thanks again :D
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I bought my first Native American flute a few weeks ago. I wait until everyone leaves the house before I practice, your video has taught me so much..Thanks so much for sharing your video. Have a wonderful day :)
your comment makes me very happy! Congrats on your flute journey. We all started not yet wanting others to hear us play. you'll share your music with others someday and it will bring them such joy. RG
thanks sps. there are quite a few differences between a native american flute and a recorder. I encourage you to get a native american flute and try it I think you'll enjoy the mellow sound. Certainly doesn't have the range and scale or recorders but a beautiful sound nonetheless.
I love you video. I hope that you come out with a part two soon! I have one question though my lowest note sounds different than yours but all of my others are fine. Do you know why it might be like that? I am really confused. Thank you so much!
Like youR video. I'm at the point where I know the scale and can play a few songs but I'm stuck on what I can do next. Looking forward to more lessons.
