people don't understand you have to build up the joke or comedic situation. you cannot just come out with a slew of prepared punchlines like a sitcom. that destroys the atmosphere. what he did here was ratcheting which makes the exchange feel fluid and spontaneous, leaving the audience is completely unaware of his act.
