Perhaps the Ovemind expected its own death, or at least the relinquishment of its control over the zerg, as it would enable Kerrigan to fully take charge and free the zerg from the Fallen One's influence. But the Overmind probably didn't want to die like this. It wanted to assimilate the protoss before allowing Kerrigan to take over.

The Overmind was an antihero of sorts. It wanted to prevent the Fallen One's evil from coming to fruition, but its methods involved sacrificing the protoss.

@Akantorz12 Where are you getting this? The end fight involves Kerrigan, the Protoss, and Raynor fighting together against the hybrids, not fighting Kerrigan. The whole point of starcraft 2 was to save Kerrigan because it was only possible to beat the hybrids with Kerrigan's help.

@Tuobeb24 Nope, he did that to destroy the Overmind, because the Overmind and its cerebrates can only be harmed and killed by Dark Templar energies (from the void). In other words, you can't nuke or simply shoot the Overmind to death. Tassadar combined the power of the Khala and the Void, destroyed the Overmind and burnt out.

All the protoss in his ship were ready for the sacrifice Tassadar was about to commit, and they were glad to be part of it. The protoss do not know fear and are honored to die in glorious combat. On top of that, he couldnt allow the Overmind to escape through the space portal he opened over himself : he had to strike NOW!
