He was a musical genius! Nobody could sell a song the way he did. One of my favorite Anthony Newly songs was Look at that Face. Does anybody have a video of that one that they can post? I would deary love to see it.
I saw Newley do a revival of "Stop the World" (either late 70s or early 80s) he was incredible. Obviously a Great song but to me the most moving song in the show was "Someone Nice Like You" ( "If we could Live twice- I'd make life paradise- for someone really nice- like you") He sang that to his wife when they were older regretting the fact that he had been a less than perfect husband over the years......
Wonderful! He was such a brilliant performer and it great to see him again.
Thank You Sir or Madam for Posting.
A few years ago I heard an ignorant radio host on CBC here in Canada disparage Mr. Newley after one of his songs was played saying "he'd never heard of him".
I always say : "It's better to remain silent and look like an idiot than to open your mouth an remove all possible doubt".
he sings this song better than anyone, altho I much prefer the original ending that was on the cast album. But I heard he never sang any song the same way twice.
Thanks for that. I haven't seen him perform it since I was a girl. There was something amazing about how he delivered it. His voice was so unusual and interesting. No one like an actor can send out a song with strong emotion to the audience. They use their whole bodies, not just their vocal cords. I saw him sing it without the make-up, as I recall. Also, the interpretation is lighter, more matter-of-fact sounding compared to other interpretations. Brilliant! Thanks again!
There is one vent puppet..who tried to perform this tune"Farfel The Dog"..Jimmy Nelson's dog puppet..until Mr.Newley found out and he told poor Jimmy and "Farfel"thru his lawyers"Don't you dare perform Mr.Newley's song again..or we'll sue your A-! off in court!'.
Here is Tony Newley..dressed in his"Little Chap"clown suit..puts on his clown make up and he performs his songs from his stage musical"Stop The World?!:I Want To Get Off!".
i met mr Newley many times he was not only a great singer but a great person ate dinner with him and backstage or of the time while seeing him he is truly miss
If you notice Tony Newley flubbed his intro to his song"What Kind Of Fool..Am I?!"..either he was drunk, stoned or..he was just allowing his undisciplined ego
How can you call your funny clown costume and make up from"Stop The World..I Want To Get Off?!"rubbish? the show was wonderful and so was your character of"Little Chap".
@bridges52news: Well, with a mom who grew up on this stuff, I've heard all kinds of versions, including the ones you mentioned. This song was not meant to be a pop tune, which is exactly the manner in which those singers rendered it--even Sammy Davis Jr., who I have always respected. This is a Broadway-style song, and Newley gave it the presence and hesitation intended for it. I have no quarrel with your opinion or those singers, but here Newley is giving proper treatment to his music.
@bridges52news I used to hate Newley's style, too. But, I think that it actually grows on you. And, Tony was a real singer. Remember in the beggining of the video? He used to perform this every night. That's not just singing, but dancing and stage acting as well. Stage acting is really tough. There are no second takes. Lighten up. It is his song...
The first time I had ever heard of Anthony Newley I had seen him as the Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland back in 1985. He was my favorite Mad Hatter. His facial expressions totally cracked me up. I had kinda forgotten about him until just recently, and I have been reading up on his career, and seeking out his albums. The man was performance genius! Love his delivery on this song. Thanks so much for posting. God Bless.
Brilliant and even that is an understatement. I did have the LP of Stop The World but that has gone now. I never saw him live and the closest I got was the film musical with Tony Tanner. He was great, but tony newley he wasn't.
I've loved Anthony Newley since I was a kid and saw "Dr. Doolittle." I love his music and his magnificent voice, and saw him in concert back in the 80s. He was magnificent. FYI-for film lovers, he played the Artful Dodger in Alec Guinness' version of "Oliver Twist" back in the 50s.
I've seen different stage versions of "Stop the World..." in the '60's & had the recording of it with the original London cast with Tony Newley & Anna Quayle. Without a shred of doubt his, is the definitive interpretation of "Littlechap". No one has ever done it better than he has.
Today (20 July) is the 48th anniversary of 'Stop The World' opening in London. This song stopped the show and made him a huge star. 'World' opened on Broadway on the 3rd of October 1962 and his newspaper reviews were, as I recall, somewhat mixed, but the people formed long lines around the theatre box office the next morning to buy tickets, and the rest is history.
This comment is about the video 'Anthony Newley Live' (I cannot post my comment there, it won't allow me). 'I Promised You a Love Song' is, like 'What kind of Fool', a passionate and eloquent song and one that is exquisitely performed. I believe it to be THE jewel in his repertoire. We are privileged to have been allowed to share such personal memories with him.
This video completely blows me away. I loved his musicals as a child, but never had the pleasure of seeing him perform live -- consider yourselves privileged if you were so fortunate! This performance is so moving. An incredible song, an incredible voice. . . thanks for posting it!
He was a brilliant performer. An absolute treasure. Thanks so much for sharing these. What a thrill they brought to my day finding them here on You Tube.
As a performer who does a good number of these great songs in my own act, it is a wonderful treat to see the master himself perform his own songs in his own inimitable way. Thank you so much for posting these fabulous performances.
THIS MAN...THIS MAN...OH, GOD...If you never saw him live on Broadway...OH...God...When they made him, and Gwen Verdon..I tell you, they REALLY broke the mold. UNBELIEVEABLE. BEYOND fantastic.
I am SO glad to find this. I was a huge fan of his musicals and wore my records out. So brilliant, and I recently saw that there might be a musical based on HIS life. Full circle, eh?
Yes thank you very much indeed for posting this valuable video memory of one of the all-time greats. It was an honor to see him perform a number of times - I even got to say to the great man, "Break A Leg" right before a New York Rainbow Room appearance!!
This would surely bring the house down anywhere in the world!
Wonderful!

to those who are bashing this performance: for your information, it's a reaction to british music hall, not american musical theatre.
