I tried listening to the cover version of James Vincent McMorrow (Irish folk singer), and I found it dull, lifeless, boring, and monotonous. Yeah sure, gotta respect the opinions of others, but how can one not like this ORIGINAL Steve Winwood version? The original is colorful, dynamic, and full of lively rhythmic sensation. The tune, the singing have such a TIMELESS qualities to it, great song from a wonderful era in music... the 80's!!!
This is a good Winwood track featuring Chaka. What is amazing to me is how well Chaka, one of the most powerful lead and improvizational vocalists ever, manages to stay in her secondary lead role and respect Steve's primary lead throughout this track. This is fairly easy for producers to control in a studio setting (check out the original version of this track), but much more difficult for a natural soloist to do live (check out any Patti LaBelle live collaboration). Go Steve!!! Go Chaka!!!
chaka's one of my favorite singers and winwood's one of my favorite everythings. have all his albums since spencer davis. they're all wonderful. always tried to catch winwood when he'd come to town with traffic, blind faith, clapton, and solo concerts. never dissappointed. always provided genius like uplifting, introspective music and many holy goodtimes. steve's music will live inside me long into and beyone my next few lives.
@Nacho66 I hear ya on that, Nacho. she's a great singer, but she her tonal style here just doesn't mesh with his. Great groups like The Band were amazing in that their vocals sounds just blended perfectly. Here is an example of where two people singing in tune just don't jibe.
wiwood tore it up. and chaka provided perfect harmony. i'd've liked to see patti kick some of that. like she rocked that song w/ the blind country boy.
Chaka could take a NOTHING of a band of wannabes and turn it into the biggest force in music. Hey, wait! She did just that! Check out the history of Rufus, the band she fronted in the 1970s -- rather -- the band who backed her when she flew the coop!
You know i bet you after chaka khan starred on that lame ass episode of phineas and ferb a bunch of little kids looked her up and hopefully they stumbled on this song cause this is awesome
@BusaccaNr1 i see him about once year last time with a small band backing santana usually winwood good with either. short quiet set. like now i would ratersee lyly lovett with big band
@patrickoreilly30 ...no he dont...what is that supposed to be?...a compliment?...soul means sounding like yourself and being unique...not "sounding black"
Ooooh, old Chaka sounds like she was havin trouble stayin in pitch (she keeps goin REALLY 'flat') I used ta live next door to her when we lived in New Yaawk an i guess all the shit that we all went through, maybe did affect her voice...coz as i've bin typing this comment the clip has been playing away, and she was all OVER the shop...flat AND sharp...Jeez,now iss stopped i'm tryin ta member if she actually did get any 'bang on' notes at all.Wish i hadn't heard that now,coz i luv the actual track!!
I read somewhere that Chaka said Steve Winwood had more soul in him than all other white singers put together -- or something like that. He's a life-long fave of mine, going way back to his days in Traffic.
they did collaborate before.....Khan sings on the original recorded version. She also arranged the vocal on Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" and has recorded with Joni Mitchell, too.
@foxymidnite Yeah...she 'killed it' alright...as in nailing down the coffin LID,LoL!!As i've said to the guy above (or below...i can't work out where this comment will be placed!!) she was literally FIGHTING to stay in pitch in this performance, right from the opening bars of the track!!I wont rewrite what i juss put above/below this...juss read the reply to 'paddyOmalley' to get the rest (if you're even interested of course) as it shows that i certainly AINT 'anti~Chaka'!!XXXX!!
@paddeyOmalley We MUST have been listening to completely different clips...coz she WAS flat and sharp throughout the majority of this performance!!!!An don get me wrong...i LOVE Chaka, the woman (spent a lot of time with her) AND her talent/voice,so i'm most certainly NOT a disliker of Chakks...not at ALL!!She was really fighting to stay in pitch in this, right from the opening bars!!She 'pulled it off' mainly due to her professionalism and dynamic 'presence'...NOT by vocal abilities alone!!XXXX!!
Chaka knows how powerful she is, but she is also humble about her talent. That's why she's very generous when she's duetting with people. Which makes me love her even more for it!!
my wife loves some Chaka Khan, so i have to send this to her channel, "missu4u" and this happens to be one of her fav songs too! so glad you post it!~Phurdrick
Performances like this haven't totally gone away. We all just crave the music of our own generation.

I'm actually surprised that Winwood came out as the stronger vocalist here.
I love ya Chaka, but honey, your intonation is noticably off.
