1st off, they aren't youngsters. 2nd, its an all volunteer military. To join combat arms you must volunteer.(That makes it twice you must volunteer to fight). To be airborne you must volunteer again. To go to Ranger school, yep, you got it, you must volunteer again. For special forces, guess what they require? You would also find it amazing as to how many volunteer to go back to the meat grinder. On the other hand, some people remain "youngsters" thier entire life. But they aren't in the Army.

Our military is volunteer so long as it meets its quota...if we get short enough or go to war then there's a draft probability. It has only been the non combat arms people that have a hard time getting recruits, such as truck drivers and logistics. That's the point, nobody wants to be drafted. A "volunteers" by definition works for nothing but our military does a job and gets paid for it. Our military is stretched to the point that we have to hire mercenaries which is indicative of a shortage in some areas.

Wrong. A volunteer in the sense of the military VS the draft is one who freely joins the military VS one who is selected by means of an involuntary draft. No one expects to work for nothing. The "mercenaries" you refer to are historic and not out of context with history. Private guards, groups hired for security of a company or in the employ of a government for security purposes of its personnel. (US soldiers are not trained as personal security guards).

They serve as builders, food service, personal care and security, bakers, laundry people, prostitutes, etc.etc. Alexander the great considered his number of camp followers to equal his army. Napolian considered it at three to one. In Vietnam it was one to one and in Iraq has been .80 to 1, until recently where it is now at 1 to 1.

Oops, the MSM failed to mention that when the army missed its numbers for two months last year. I believe reenlistments in Iraq last year hit 130%, I think that was shoveled to page 9 in the paper as well.
