On that night, I was a student at Tillman, and my sister, a Nipher student, were home alone. My parents were on the other side of town, and the scene was between us. My sister's friend was one of the first to know of it, thanks to her uncle, and thanks to that, we knew to lock the doors and stay safe. Nothing happened, but it was good to know we were safe.
I do not live in kirkwood, but I do live in DES Peres and I do so much in kirkwood! I would just like to say RIP Mayor Saboda. He died from the gunshot wound some months later. He will also always be in out hearts. I remember that I was at home with my little brother watching celebrity apprentice when the message about the shooting interrupted the show. Me and my brother were so scared because there was no adult home! I shook all of us and we will never forget that night and those days that fol
Kirkwood is a wonderful town. I graduated Kirkwood High School in 1976...and in fact...was a sophomore when Cookie Thornton was a senior. I remember him being one of the more popular kids.; So, it came as a complete shock to me when I first heard about this tragic event. I live in Indiana now...and haven't been back to Kirkwood in almost 30 years. It was sure nice watching this video. But, I sure hope this tragedy doesn't come to define Kirkwood.
sorry buddy thats not a claim to fame at all that is just sick our clam to fame is jeremy maclin kirkwood nativ who went on to mizz and then to the NFL with the eagles and it is really a very nice place
Its a privilage to live in such a great community. This night showed how much of a strong and tight knit community we are. This is a great video guys.
Thorton was not sent by God to punish us! He should actually be prayed for along with everyone else who died! There blog is just a blog, not the bible! My school is down the street from where it happened. My friend was across the street from. Dewey's.
awesome video, grew up in the kirkwood/glendale area and now live here again. that is an awesome tribute to everyone in kirkwood as well as those involved with that night. Too bad they killed the idiot and he will nver see what he has caused or suffer for what he did.
Thank you for making this video! It was so beautiful. I have lived my entire life in Kirkwood and I think that this video is such a great example of the unity that the people of kirkwood have.
i am a kirkwood grad of '05 and i am away at school. i am saddened that i cant be there in kirkwood to be there for my community. this video has helped me so much. i have been able to see everything and feel like i am truly there. watching this video haas also helped me grieve. if possible, maybe you could make another video of the days after making this video. i havent been able to see the memorials and how they have grown. hopefully they will all still be there when i come home in 2wks thanks!
I want to tkank you for this video! I lost two of my close friends that night, two great cops. My they rest in peace, along with the three other victims.
I just moved from long Island to kirkwood in Jan. 5th. I was shocked at the events that night. Even though I may be the newest member of the Kirkwood Community, the strength I have seen from this community is amazing, it is truly an amazing place. This tribute shows how caring this community is. My heart and prayers go out to all the Kirkwood Police Officers and the families of the victims.
Yeah you know, despite what might happen in Kirkwood, we really are a strong community that really comes together when we need to. And that's the good thing about it. Suffice to say, these types of things rarely if ever happen here, and that's the way it should be...peaceful. But as far as support systems go, Kirkwood as a whole is one of the best...
wow. this is amazing. i am in 8th grade at your school and i think that you did a really good job on this. my friends and i have all watched this and we were on the verge of tears, seriously. congrats.
that is amazing. id there any way i can get those pictures, i'm making my own tribute video. if you could give me some links to the pictures because i am have a hard time finding pic.

first we want to thank everyone for the comments and we want to thank the people at kmov for helping I also want to thank everybody for watching the vid so all in all a big big thank you
ps. the song is YOUR HAND IN MINE By EXPLOSION IN THE SKY
...I moved my family to the Kirkwood area because of the strong and caring community depicted in this video. A few days after this tragic incident I had to travel to Atlanta on business. It amazed me that such a tragedy only a few days eariler was already forgotten by the national media...I kept up with the events through contact with my family and friends....Thank You for this video. Though I wasn't here...I feel that I was...
It's weird how such a small place can have sorrow and horrible things happen to it. I got a little rem-a-nis-ing at the beginning that showed all of the places I have walked passed. I am fourteen now, and at first I didn't know much and I acted as if it didn't matter, but now I do care, and I do want to do something.
The Tribute is very moving. I lived in Kirkwood many years ago and have loved the city since. My prayers go out to all who lost loved ones. May God bless and keep you and help heal the wounded in body and spirit.
Rollcall: Those who serve in our cities and towns and face danger every day; who wear the badge of police, firefighter, or first responder: thank you. For those who fell in the line of duty: thank you. We will see you on your watch in Heaven where we will meet again. A note to those with anger, justified or unjustified: you will never find your solution at the end of a firearm. Please, don't squeeze that trigger, reach out and take the hand of a fellow citizen. TOGETHER, we will find a way.
It all starts at home, with focus on ourselves, individually - not with judging others. Who REALLY knows why Cookie Thornton did what he did? Please have some sympathy for ALL those who hurt because of the action. We cannot change what has been done, but we might be able to do something to change violent future acts. Anger, aggression and obscene words don't do it. How about respect, love, understanding, listening and COMMUNICATION in a gentle way?
What a wonderful job you have done. I have lived in Kirkwood for over 50 years and am having so much trouble wrapping my mind around this whole thing. Thank you for doing this.
What a beautiful and moving video...it brought tears to my eyes. I worked in Kirkwood for many years and came to love the city and the people. May the healing begin....
Thank you! Beautifully done! Now, what can each of us do, individually, to stop such things from continuing, not only in our city, but around the world? What can we do to fix something that is so broken? M.O.
My heart and prayers go out to Kirkwood. I thank you for your video. I have been a member of Kirkwood United Methodist Church for years and know that Kirkwood will prevail.
your welcome my girlfriend and i wanted to do somthing to show how strong our litte town is and to never forget the fallen and if any one is from kirkwood pass it on

It's a shame that a little mid west town like Kirkwood,Mo claim to fame is this shooting & the kidnapping of Shawn Hornbeck & Ben Ownby.
I'm from NYC but when I hear of Kirkwood,Mo I think of those two events. Sad cause I hear its a really nice place.
