  • A great Monologue from a magnificent actor,

  • Likely the greatest actor to ever come out of Hollywood

  • Why do some even care to see a scene like this, when they are incapable of absorbing its feeling, meaning and content?

  • came to see this scene when George Clooney mention Spencer Tracy, on Inside the Actor's Studio, hitting his marks by looking down w/o anyone noticing.

  • @starfish2344 LOL Me too :) and isn't he a genius! Only now when we know what he's doing can we tell :)

  • @starfish2344...Hitting his marks, yes, but looking down seems to fit this dialogue and delivery so well. Perhaps, I was thinking that Tracy did this in rehearsal and good direction from the Director had him keep this method in the scene. Also, during this monologue, Hepburn incorporated "looking down" as she set for her delivery. To me, it just gave the touchy situation of an interracial marriage in the 60's more awkwardness and discomfort when addressing these issues. IMO...

  • SPENCER TRACY !! FATHER OF ALL BLACK PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!! WAY TO GO SPANCY>>>>WAY TO GO OLD BUDDY !! :)

  • His speech was just amazing, can't wait to watch the whole movie :)

  • What a moving scene. Brilliant piece of acting.

  • I can't breathe . All I can ask for is a love even 1/12 of what Kathrine and Spencer had . The hurt and love in her eyes and the confort in his just rips me apart . And love is definitely blind , it knows no race , gender , or religion . This monologue is the true essence of what love is

  • Acting 101.

  • Wow, Spencer went out with a bang!!!

  • Best....Speech...Ever.

  • Geez mixing races is a great thing we are all humans come to the UK it's the most tolerant and friendly place there is - no French though lol we are just jealous cause they've got all that space and wine

  • This is one of my all time favorite movies! Everything about it---terrific script, fabulous acting and a wonderful song makes it a classic to enjoy for the ages.

  • considering some of the unfortunate racial comments and theories below one can just say, that Darwin was, indeed, right, when it comes to certain persons.

  • Katherine Hepburn's reaction was real tears BECAUSE she and Tracy had a REAL LIFE romance, and she knew he was to die soon (6 weeks after this scene). She was overcome by the fact his health was failing and had LIMITED TIME TO LIVE, and knew it was their last scene together, ever. LEGENDARY MOMENT IN CINEMA FOLKS.

  • Spencer died soon after this movie was in the can.

  • Great monologue. Lots of hate & faulty logic here in the comments, which is sadly typical. Race mixing is okay by me: we are all related anyway & have black ancestors even if you go back just a few generations. Any cultural 'problems' will be erased by time and change, as always. Neither race nor culture are static entities; they have always been dynamic & changing. Plus I love all women & find them all attractive; so I would say don't try to narrow my choices with your narrow mind.

  • @daokuk I love what you said: "don't try to narrow my choices with your narrow mind"!!!

  • @daokuk

    Well said.

  • whats sad is that the same problem in 1967 is still a problem for some in 2012

  • @KosmicColette it is not sad.Race mixing between black and white has ALWAYS been a bad idea,as has integration of the public schools. The liberals, respectable conservatives, and egalitarians tried to make us think it was a good idea against all scientific and social evidence to the contrary. The reality is that race mixing was being purposely promoted by the jewish communists of america in the early 20th century and their philosophy set the stage for national racial policy beginning in the 1950s

  • @IwontConform you cant just leave it at love two people can't just love each other ?

  • And , being, an Irish successsfullllll boxer you would latch with his love. Wouls you like to swing on a star or------ Harry loved him.

  • I have seen and love this movie. This is the best monologue to have been spoken by an astounding performer who also put on a brave face throughout this production as he was battling his illness. God bless Spencer Tracy and God bless Katherine Hepburn for supporting him. I love when they both share a loving glance at each other at 4:36. It's almost like they are thinking/saying:

Katherine: You brave, strong man. I love you so much!

Spencer: You are the best. I thank you and I love you most.

  • I loooooved this movie! it doesn't have to do with being racist its about learning how to accept others! some people are so blind that they can't see forgiveness or have a humble heart, this world is so up tight with non sense of Racism those people need to grow up how can you be at peace in this dumb world!!! and why do people have to be sooooooo damn rude here on youtube!!!!!!!

  • IwontConform - You are a supreme idiot.

  • @IwontConform Must RESIST?? lmao!! Dude....i think you have a serious mental problem.Maybe you might have seen your mommy being fucked hard by 2 10inch-huge super blacknegro like cocks when you were young and now you are not sure sure whether you are a result of mixing or not. Get a life troll.your redneck thoughts are pointless. MIXING IS INEVITABLE !!!

  • Jesus H. Christ....the dude could just say, 'you have my blessings' and get on with it. But, nooooooo. Mastuh' gots to have a big ole' overly melodramatic monologue where he gets to hear himself talk....

  • @TheShannon76 You didn't understand much of the meaning of this monologue did you!?

  • @TheShannon76 kindly go fuck yourself.

Signed, everyone who isn't a racist fuck

  • @TheShannon76 He was coming to terms with his decision and instead of telling it to just his future son-in-law, he wanted to expression his feelings to everyone... including their maid. I think any reasonable person would do this.

  • R.I.P

  • @quiditta a better learning lesson is to use this film as but one example of jewish-controlled hollywood`s ongoing effort to promote racial mixing with carefully contrived motion pictures

  • This movie was a product of the same jewish hollywood that is today encouraging black/white race mixing in many movies and tv entertainment networks aimed at young people as part of the elitist multiracial agenda.Of course, the propaganda today is far more blatant and tasteless. That the director of this film, stanley kramer,is jewish, should come as no surprise.Regardless of quality of acting or writing, films that attempt to influence opinions on racial matters should be avoided.

  • I just watched 'Up' for the first time on Friday and the first thing that came to mind when I saw the little old man was Spencer Tracy, particularly in this movie! ;) love this movie so much and especially this scene(it made me cry)

  • "Joey, this may be the last chance I ever have to tell you to do anything. So I'm telling you. Shut up." <3

  • I find it funny that he says that passionaite speach. Yet, at the end tell the black made to "hurry up and get the food".

    Aaaahhhhhh......America.

  • Love this film , and love this song.

  • To think, Spencer Tracy was literally dying while filming this film.

  • Wow......What an amazing monologue <3

  • I just had a Spencer Tracy moment. I think I came close to doing it justice.

  • I love Spencer and Katharine in this movie :) They are Marvelous together !!!! May they both rest in peace :))))

  • My Gosh...Spencer Tracy is divine, one of the best monologue that I ever eared.

  • good acting but this fucking movie man....so...I don't know...naive? Superficial? I don't know which word would be right (in my opinion) but, it kind of reminds me of the more recent movies having to deal with race, like Crash...something about it that's just off even though there are some good performances.

  • That look he gives Ms Hepburn about 4.30 - stunning.

  • Makes me cry..

  • Incredible final performance!!

  • when do they break out the acid tabs cause thats the story of, thats the glory of the 60's

  • Such a great movie - Thank you!

  • The black man sorta looks like the guy in In The Heat of the Night

  • @Sevmarick it sorta is the SAME MAN !

  • What a piece of film. Excellent.

  • A great actor - a great director - and a great film - not like the majority of trash that is served up to film audiences today

  • do they ever get married

  • zero talent Hepburn and Tracy

that's what the FBI brings US cinema

    fake approval for political purposes

  • @MsThunderroad i'm sorry but r u a paid troll or something?

  • he was retarded and played one role for an entire career

he wasn't able to follow the simplest direction, the reason he was always filmed standing or sitting to say his lines

the rewards of being an FBI collaborator in J Edgar Hoover run Hollywood

  • wow .. a movie where people can act , what a rare thing these days...

  • classic

  • I almost cheered at 1:30 i couldn't stand her character, only thought of herself the whole time never taking time to think that this is coming very fast to the parents.

Despite her I loved the film and thought the performances were great and this speech is just 8 minutes of bliss.

Bravo Mr. Tracy, heard that he was very sick, would have never guessed from his performance.

  • i suppose the people that think interracial is cool are unware that there has been a race nihilism agenda going on for decades in the USA and elsewhere for the express purpose of destroying racial indentity and the whole notion of race. This ideology`s goal is to hide the scientific reality of "race" and race differences under the pretext of "ending racism" by deliberately encouraging mixing to meld the races together as one and destroy the unique traits that distinguish each race from the other

  • Tracy's timing is perfect. He makes his point to his daughter and her fiance, and he lets his words sink in to everyone. Finally, he barks to Tilly for dinner, and it's funny and poignant.

  • 5:53 cuts to the heart.

  • "There would be only one thing worse, and that would be if, knowing what you two aer, knowing what yuo two have, and knowing what you two feel.....you didn't get married."

The good of humanity was never on greater display than with this line.

  • 5 racist fagots who didn't like it.

  • @asiwal um , your use of the F word makes you no better than them !

  • @Jackofmanytrades65 Well I don't give a F about what you think.

  • @asiwal REALLY? your use of the F word puts you in the exact same category.

  • @Jackofmanytrades65 so be it. Just fuck off.

  • @asiwal so guess since you dont give a F, you mind me calling you a BIGOTTED JACKASS EITHER !

  • You're a DUMBASS American!

  • @asiwal one homophobic bigot commenting on the people who disliked this video

  • @Ejwoods08 You also please fuck off.

  • @asiwal i liked the anti-racist part but not the homphobic part of your comment

  • @evans54 Every gay guy is missing my point. My comment is not aimed at them but at racists. OK may be I didn't use the appropriate word. Perhaps I should have called them assholes or dickheads but they are all derogatory words just as faggot is. The point is I was trying to demean racists not gays.

  • Spencer Tracey was the inspiration of Karl in Up. :)

  • I love spencer tracy, but find the subject matter of the film repugnant.I always opposed whites dating blacks, and still do.

  • @IwontConform Well, I guess all interracial couples will just have to quote spencer tracy, even in 2011 , "SCREW WHAT YOU THINK!"

  • @53398 why must someone date outside their race anyway? to be fashionable? there is nothing culturally in common, and usually no real attraction to another race,so why do it? just to avoid being offensive? when several interracial couples were polled. The answers to why they were together were vague,or,seemed to suggest an external liberal influence. In other words, the implication was that biology would`ve prevailed and kept these people with their own race,if not for a pro-interracial agenda

  • @IwontConform You know its really interesting what youre saying. Because at first I was ready to totally disagree with you. I myself am not really that attracted to my own race so much. But I DO have to think why? I WAS raised around alot of inter racial couples but there maybe some influence in how society has presented it. But I do think that there have always been people who are drawn to something different and new to them even without any greater agenda.

  • @pluckanalogy Yes,i recently spoke with an authority on the subject, and he says there is both a biological component and sociological component at work in influencing a person`s choices in the race of who they date. Its an unfortunate reality that ideology has had an influence on our choices and attitudes regarding race. This might not be a bad thing if it werent for the anti-white sentiment inherent in it.Its clear that the goal is to "dilute" the white identity, not create racial harmony.

  • @IwontConform But I dont understand what would be the proof to back the desire to dilute the white identity. Its interesting because when you go to Britian and compare the white people there that are more " pure" to the ones in America..The features are very very different. More sharp. But that is a side comment... why the need for dilutiing of the white race??

  • @pluckanalogy Because the ideology teaches incorrectly, and with obvious bias, that the white race is responsible for racial prejudice or whatever other "evils" that plague civilization and that reducing or diluting the white race via intermixing will eliminate "inequality" or "racism".The ideology also incorrectly teaches that there is no "race" or racial differences,so there is no reason for preservation of races. It uses this falsity to pursue its delusion of a raceless world.

  • @pluckanalogy

All this talki about "dilution" is a fucking waste of time. Deal with it - people have been fucking whoever they want forever. It wont stop just because you feel uncomfortable

  • @IwontConform I just want to know why you feel that way about it. I've never understood the logic of being against interracial couples. If you could explain the logic behind your belief I think I would better understand your point of view. Is it just whites and blacks that you don't think should be together or do you think that all races should stay to themselves? While my opinion will likely stay the same, I would like to know the other side.

  • @IwontConform Well it's good to know that you plan on living up to the name of your youtube account. I was scared you just chose that to be edgy at first.

  • @lordmaldad yes i do plan on it.When i look around and see the moron million of our population who get everything they know and believe from our controlled mass media and seem to lack any capacity for critical thinking,i am determined not to follow them. Therefore, you will not see me race-mixing,you will not see me welcoming the third world invaders who will eventually replace americans, with open arms, and you will not see me putting the rights and interests of non-whites over my own people

  • @IwontConform join the modern world

  • That's the greatest last speech anyone could ever have. Here's to you Spencer Tracy, you who have lived far beyond your own mortality and will live beyond our own.

  • This is another one of my favorite films. I admire how this film shows compassion, love and courageous choices. Mr. Tracy's speech was wonderful. You can actually see the love between him and Ms. Hepburn: her tears welling in her eyes and Mr. Tracy's long smile and warm look at her. An excellent example that love is not a choice, its a deep feeling that people feel for one another and as Dr. Martin Luther King once said 'Don't judge by the color of skin, judge by the content of their character."

  • @taurusgirl65 please,no more quotes from MLK.It is well documented that the man was a communist puppet,a fraud, and a plagiarist.

  • @IwontConform First of all, don't tell me what to do. I have a right to choose whichever quote to include in an opinion and thought, whether a person is a fraud or not. Second of all, you don't see me telling you how I feel about you opposed to birracial relationships so I won't because you have your opinion and I have mine.

  • @IwontConform stupid comment

  • God I love this.thank you for posting it .

  • @Quenyar Amen! And yet, whenever I point out to people who are anti-gay marriage that their arguments are exactly the same arguments as those that were against interracial marriage, they don't see it. They really can't see the similarity! *shakes head*

  • One of the greatest monologs in the history of filmdom.

  • I'm a licensed minister and just married a cute couple on the beach

last summer. The young man was blonde, blue-eyed & white, the young

lady was a beautiful dark African-American whose father was a minister.

Both sets of parents were against it, but the kids had loved each other

for years by then. I met with them several times to discuss the challenges

they would face. I was especially disappointed that the girl's father refused

to marry them or even attend. Racism is STILL AROUND in 2011!

  • @GooglFascists That's very sad about the girl's father, it's just awful that such things are still happening in 2011.

Still, I hope the young couple have a long and happy marriage. :)

  • @DuaneMThomas you seem to be missing his point. His point is that he lives in my country (britain) and were not backwards when it comes to black people. Were all equals. Where as in your country, which I'm guessing is America, is still very much, retarded when it comes to race relations.

  • @MrPrueKain

What the hell are you on about "deeply wrong" love between a black man, and a White woman is wrong? Hmm.

  • @RedRoosterRoad I think he meant that racism and prejudice is unnatural and deeply wrong, and that it's wrong to be opposed to two people of different races falling in love and having a life together, not that interracial romances are wrong.

  • Please please PLEASE people.. stop mumbling about racism. He's right, Spencer Tracy is right and there is nothing, nothing on Earth you can do about it. Stop wasting your life about something that is unnatural and deeply wrong. There is only one race, that's it, end of the game. Damn, I'm watching a monumental scene in history of cinema and you are spoiling the moment, because I can't help but look at your pointless comments: Why did you ever open this video first place!

  • @MrPureKain Preach on!

  • Spencer Tracy was magnificent in this movie and capped off a legendary career with his greatest performance. Tracy should have won the Oscar. Columbia made Ms. Hepburn and Director Stanley Kramer place their salaries in escrow to cover the studio due to Tracy's health. Thankfully we have this movie and it's truly splendid final scene to remember Tracy. The behavior of Kate Hepburn and SpencerTracy .and the media's respect of two truly great stars garners respect and admiration.

  • This scene is one of those that makes me feel like I am sitting in the same room

  • 1 OF 3 GREATEST SPEECHES IN THE MOVIES . The other 2 are George C Scott in Patten and the 3rd, Al Pacino in scent of a woman-- HOOA!!!!!!!!!

  • everytime i see this scene i have the feeling as if i sat there on the couch impressed and just about bursting in tears.

  • I've heard that there's a point in this speech when Spencer looked at Katharine and she knew that he was dying. I feel like that happens at 3:40. Or maybe 4:35, haha idk. Its so bittersweet to hear him talking straight to her, and not to the character. Great speech.

  • I just fell in love with Spencer Tracy...

  • The Graduate, God Father, Midnight Cowboy - there are a lot of good films through modern film history. But nothing beats this one, the best ever made.

Tracy´s and Hepburns appearance is absolutely fantastic.

  • I loved the films from this era 1940s-1960s. There are excellent films now, but I grew up in the 60s and they are so nostalgic for me. Great writing, acting, just wonderful. Just finished watching "To Sir With Love". Both still powerful and watchable today.

  • I couldn't agree more. A great way to end a career! Vintage Spencer Tracy!

  • You could see in that scene, that it was really Spencer Tracy talking to Katherine Hepburn. Every time I see it, I'm deeply moved. It was a great love those two had...

  • @Liz86000 , Do you know if from 4.15 to 4.40 if that was part of the script or spencer's own words. As you say it was a great love that they had.

  • @markserjeant I think I read it was his own words. He said to a friend afterwards something like "I finally did it! I finally told her how I felt. You should have seen her face!". By that time, Spence had trouble remembering his lines, and that movie was very difficult to make for him. But in that moment, I think he wanted to make that last declaration to Katherine. And indeed, he died not long after that. And you can see in her face that she doesn't act.

I watched that scene again and cried...

  • @Liz86000, Thank you for your reply. It's a pity because of his religious belief's that he couldn't divorce his wife and marry katharine. I know he took care of his wife and family all his life financially, but to me katharine was his real widow.

  • Subject: For the good of the american people

Anagram: chortle to foe from PinHead apogee

Exactly, TAP. Get a grip! I am off for breakfast.

  • "And happen to have a pigmentation problem". GOOOOOD , you said it, Spencer.

  • this is probably the most beautiful monologue I've ever seen in any movie ever. I cried in the end.

  • Tracy, Hepburn, Poitier acting and Kramer directing

no movie can get better than this

  • Thought of the Moment:We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers. -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Can I quote Spencer? That is the one thing I would disagree with! And I have a sense of irony 2.

You have no sense of irony have you reilly question mark

  • Thatnk you...I didn't know he died until I read alot of the comments.

  • @ToxicOdiousOne ...what are you talking about?

  • @ToxicOdiousOne You're a dick head

  • I was a child when this movie was released; but I remember the comments, Spencer Tracy or no, not everyone gave it favorable reviews. A excellant film; far ahead of it's time.

  • "Pigmentation problem"

    Epic line.

  • this is the first time I realise this story is in the end nothing more than the story of Hamlet; exept that here the father is performing the final speech movin to his own "emancipated" conclusion, where in Hamlet is Desdemon who convinces him. That's when she says "Father, what my mother was in duty to provide you as a husband, is what I am due to respond to my man". Amazing expression of love with regards to their daughters ever. acidflute@libero.it

  • damn..........did this guy win an oscar for this scene or what??? if he didn't, then wow....i have never seen this movie before and typed in "guess who" for no reason and clicked this clip and i wanna watch the movie now. That was a great speech.

  • @ThePistons4life No he didn't win, but he was nominated. Katharine Hepburn won for her role in this film though.

  • One of the best speeches made in Film history.

  • Tracy suffered a congested lung condition, forcing him to pull out of Cheyenne Autumn and The Cincinnati Kid. Edward G. Robinson replaced him for both films. On June 10, 1967, seventeen days after filming had been completed on this film, he died of a heart attack at age 67, having long suffered from emphysema since the early 1950s from his daily smoking habit. The film was released in December, six months after his death.

  • amazing acting.. amazing film.. timeless...

  • Spencer Tracey looks like Steve Martin.

  • I saw this movie for the first time last night.

    How did Spencer Tracy die?

  • @doctorshifty83 Spencer Tracy passed away of a massive coronary; on june 10, 1967 @ age 67. Alcoholisma, Diabetes and Emphysema were listed as underlying factors. KH tells how she heard him stirring that morning in the kitchen; then heard a tea cup crash to the floor w/ a loud thud, and she knew he was gone. He died 17 days after filming wrapped on GWCTD. KH never saw the completed film; she stated it would be too painful; and didn't pick up her Oscar, she sent a friend in her place.

  • Katherine Hepburns tears are real in this classic scene. She knew the end was near for Spencer Tracy. He died shortly after filming wrapped. Hepburn never saw the finished article stating that the pain of Tracy's death was too much for her to see the film. Tracy is just pure class as always.

  • Tracy got cuckolded.

  • holy crackers! it's Carl Fredricksen!

  • Those words ring truly and clearly today. For all of us.

  • One of my favorite monologues.... Spencer Tracy died just 2 weeks after finishing the filming for this movie, however, this role will have him live on forever!

  • Nobody here is acting....

  • At 8:15 Katharine Hepburn is trying to hold it together..and starts to cry...SHE did say..years later..she knew then...that the end was near...and this would be the last time they would be together on screen. Spencer died 17 days later at Katharine's lil home on George Cukor's estate....She called MGM...and let them handle it. from there... sorry not 8:15...but 3:41....

  • the best ending scene for a star. This is was the final scene that Spencer Tracey filmed. R.I.P!!

  • That was emotional i have to watch this it looks like the stuff of legend

  • Spencer Tracy is one of the best American Actor of all Time.

  • the look on her face as he speaks never fails to make me cry....such love.

  • This is what goodness is all about.

  • dude Tracy reminds me of mr frederickson from Up xD

  • Today is a different day. Yet there is still prejudice to interracial couples - not at the same level, perhaps...but it's still there. The progress is great though

  • My God, SIdney is handsome.
