Yes tilleys are good, but no where near as good as the petromax/anchor range, for one they have a very very fiddly meths jar to lose! If you look at the better lamps like the German made ones they have an on board rapid preheater which solves this problem instantly, no mess or silly british methods.
@RocketScientist79 I also have two willis and bates made lanterns, one vapalux branded and one bialladin branded model 320's. They are also much better than the tilleys. That being said, I still love them.
@fouloleron2002 Oh Willis and Bates, AKA Vapalux. Lovelly machines, yes I had one for many a year handed over to me by a great old relative. It worked for many a year until it finally bit the dust this week. However from now onwards I'll be getting one of the ones with a rapid torch onboard and the capacity to use either petrol or diesel bases. Thus the only answer really is a petromax!!!
They do take some time to light, but they are worth it in the end. I am pleased you friend found it helpful, but if he needs any more help, lighting instructions can sometimes be found on e bay.

I was losing the will to live for a while during the whole creaky process but found it very informative due to a friends request on how to light one which he had just received today.
@ZS6JMP You're right though, it's a real man thing tatting about with brass stuff with pumps, knobs, routines, flammable liquids and fire. Who the hell wants batteries and LEDs? I love my 246 :-)
@jcardrosebud Dont get me wrong, there are some modern things of quality, yet it is scarce to find built to last products. I do love my fenix torches or eka knives, but for instance when it comes to things like good old lister engines vs 3000rpm honda gennies, you will be hard pressed to get the longevity, quality and ruggedness of the vintage gear.

The horror show creaking door has been silenced with a dose of good old wd40.
Once lit, the lamp is well worth the faff. Thanks!

Was that a horror movie sound effect at about 4:50? Nice lamp though. (bit of a faff though).

@jcardrosebud Rather have something that is old quality workmanship, thats reliable than some cheap mass produced piece of modern rubbish.

@ZS6JMP Ok, I admit it, I have a couple of LED Lenser torches and several victorinox SAKs to boot, and I am a gadge nut! (don't tell anyone)

@jcardrosebud The tilley gives a mor natural and softer light than any LED ever could.
