I loved this song when it was first around in 1979 but hadn't heard it for something like 30 years! I've been searching for it for ages but kept thinking the band was "New Music" so I could never find it. I was so happy to finally find it, what a great song!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come listen to this single and more from the 70's, 80's - and now the 90's for the summer - on an Internet radio station you can listen to for free: "OffTheCharts!"
Go to Live365.com and type "Off The Charts" in the Search box. Click on the station logo and the station should begin streaming. There's also a direct link on my YouTube page.
Late seventies top of the pops audiences were a pretty dowdy bunch, unlike the early seventies. They clearly realised this when they glitzed things up in the early eighties.
It feels so good to live in the past sometimes. I had the 3 albums back in 70+/80s. I did not know what they looked like until YouTube. Thanks for sharing. So many good memories about this awesome group and music in general at that time. It was the very beginning of the new wave.
@lpbgtr Thanks, I looked at google images, it looks like The Musician Model. Strange Guitar, it seems to have so many selector switches even though it is just 2 pick ups. Also either the singer is quite a small guy as the Guitar looks massive on him.
They played this on some alternative stations, stateside. For one - WPIX, New York when they had the "PIX Penthouse party" spring summer 1979. I've said it before and I'll say it again - to be in your early 20's and be in New York at that time was magical!
@mattah111 According to the poster of this clip (smartdriverd) it was indeed an album from 1979. I distinctly remember this single from1979 - whether it was earlier or not and caught on later is a probability.
I bought the album "From A to B" when it came out, brilliant! It had the othe singles on; Sanctuary, This World Of Water and Living By Numbers, the rest of the tracks were pretty decent also.
You're right, the crowd looks like they don't know what's going on. I've got your message wrong, sorry. But there's no need to pick up a fight and talk about how you were there when we were not. I discovered this song when I was much younger than you.
@ZLUGGO Tony Mansfield became an amazing producer...another Producer that has put out excellent music from this era is Rupert Hine. Check out his Thinkman band as well as his production on albums for Saga and The Fixx!!
LOL I love this song, but you're certainly right !!! And you can definetely notice this is 100% playback. So either it was its first public performance and they were new to the crowd or the playback wasa totally turn off for them !!! Anywa I LOVE IT!!!
Anyone know the thing about They Might Be Giants and New Musik? I overheard bits of the stiory and now they sound almost the same. Comments please....
so timely. excellent lyrics. without question puts a little pep in your step. Get your f------ ass out of bed and proceed with the day and over come any and all obstacles before you.
JTHOW I agree! My opinion; Studio technology at that time was analogue & Trevor's Yes 90125 effort ushered in the "Big Sound" along with the emergence of digital. Radio programmers are cornered into CHR/AC/Rhythmic/Active Rock/Country. There isn't much of a market in their eyes for true ALT & in the few markets where it exists songs like these sound light/airy thus throwing off the block. Lastly, samplers/beatboxes/hip-hop/dance/marketing prevail. Music is a commodity & no longer an art form.
Bangin' (whatever that means) .... fantastic production - still sounds punchy and powerful - one day this band's influence will be recognised ....til then , let's just make it our little secret :)
You're wrong, MartiW. I've been doing some research. It's a person called Clive Gates, and he's not waving to his mum on this apparently, he's waving to his parole officer.
I don't blame him for waving. He probably knew they would only have a brief time in the limelight and wanted to make the most of it. He adds something to the performance and is probably trying to make up for the bass player's total lack of charisma.
Well, in regard of this...Myself I did too had it!!! Unfortunately I lost it in a house moving. I thought I would never hear it again in my entire life!!!
Ah, New Musik, man they were quite a few years ahead of their time I thought. IIRC from A to B came out in 1979. Punk was still on and the New Romantics didn't really kick in till 1981-82.
