Thanks for that interesting, in-depth answer. It'll probably take a lot more space, but maybe next time they want to launch a new car model they can recreate the Mars rover landing. Put the car on a parachute, steer it to the site, release, inflate the air bag cushions and let the car go bouncing through the streets of London bashing over pedestrians and ricocheting off buildings! Finally it stops, the bags deflate and out rolls... whatever! Total cost $114 million, 32 dead. MAGNIFIQUE!!!

How are they able to drop the car so fast and stop it so precisely? It falls like it's on rails. Do they have better brakes on the wires than in the olden days? I imagine a lot of things could easily have gone wrong. If a couple of wires paid out faster than the other wires it might have dumped the car.

Hi there.

I worked on the construction of the spaceship that the car was dropped out of for the show. It was built by an American firm and shipped over here for the big event. It was actually a simple concept but to fabricate it from scratch was certainly not simple. The car dropped under its own weight on the sled that was attached to wire points on four corners. A compressed-air pneumatic braking system was used to gently slow the cars descent to the ground. We actually built the ship and

tested it for three days in Hickstead, down the M23 towards Brighton. All of this was hidden inside the spaceship. Needless to say there were fears surrounding all the potential problems, not least the cable paying out correctly as you mentioned. As I mentioned the simplicity of the design actually kept the majority of issues at bay and the critical calculation was how hard to apply the brakes and when to ensure we didnt come up short (unimpressive) or smash that baby into the ground, which

probably would ave been an impressive sight. Mmmm, the show prototype GM released to us being returned without any glass, suspension or life left in it.

It took us 4 full overnights to construct it again in London with huge teams of people involved in the build up. Big credit has to go to the Yanks who built it, the Brits involved in assembling and sorting it when it was here and the overall project managers. Oh yeah, you mentioned the brakes. During the descent they heated up to a little over 300 degrees. There wasnt any cooling system and it took an hour and a half between tests for them to sool. If they struck 350 degrees they would have failed and the car would have bit it. Some serious wire and brake drum kit was involved to keep things steady. I dont know if the specifics of the spec will ever be released. You'll have to look up the Yank firm for that. I think they're PRG Scenic Technologies.
