Harley's absolutely right. I've monitored this with so many people, family, friends, and myself for decades. Blaming everything on "stress" and "emotions" is grasping at straws in 99% of cases. FUNDAMENTALS of "putting enough fuel in the tank to support their lifestyle" is the clear and easy solution (one would hope).

DurianRider, thank you SO much for this video...I think i finally "GOT IT"...something that I think is a limiting belief and one which I am trying to break is the idea of Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner. Like today, I had my first meal around noon, then next around 6pm...then WANTED to not eat but decided to have a bunch of mangoes..I felt kind of bad at first, then watched this and realized that it is BS and if I am hungry, i am hungry for a REASON, and SHOULD EAT and NO GUILT especially if it is FRUIT
Excellent!!! Loved the video - totally true...every diet has an equal and inverse binge! Women are starving themselves...just as we starve ourselves in many other ways. Hey Harley, what does your mother say when she hears you using that language?! Great message and perhaps clean it up a wee bit as you have so many other issues! Smile -
Wow! I'm in the middle of doing a 30 day raw food challenge and day 13 hit me really hard (see my Raw for 30 - Day 13 video). I blame emotional detox on making me want to go back to food I haven't touched in 5 years, but I see now that it's because I'm not eating enough / getting enough carbs from fruit! THANKS for the info!
Yeah that makes sense for sure. So in the circumstance of FEELING, not dwelling on, grief (spouse left you an hour ago, dog died an hour ago)is it fair enough to say that a cheese pizza or a beer is gonna lighten the emotional load? Or are you more saying that ppl shouldn't delude themselves that they are emotionally eating on a regular basis.
Like I know you took your dads death a lot better than most people would take the death of their old man... Do you thank your full carb-tank for that?
Good theory Harley. So just to clarify.. I'm a pumped up, excited living life 811er and i see my dog hit by a car and he dies slowly. is my sufficient carb intake gonna stop me from feeling anything? or if i do feel like crap is a dominos deep pan cheese pizza gonna help me numb myself?
i reckon your freaken close.. But I dunno if enough carbs is gonna make me incapable of greif..
@StevieBaskin Great question Steve. There is a BIG difference between feeling greif and DWELLING on it. Does that make sense? BIG difference between having a negative thought and DWELLING on negativity. Its normal to feel things but when we dwell on them and they become a hinderance then we know we need more sleep, sugar and or water.
When I eat my bowl of rice and vegetables, I well up with tears of joy and start screaming in an euphoric experience of maximal emotional magnitude.
Not really. But now I'm eating 1kg cooked weight of rice per meal, I'm really feeling a boost in my energy levels. I thrive on 811, but my wallet hates me.
This was a good video..explains why I gained my weight back after fasting for 21 days with only water. :( whaaa. I was not much hungrier than before my fast, but my body sure did hold onto everything I ate. I was actually less hungry after my fast. I eat less now and my body is more efficient and I can tell you that does suck.
@vicky2c Fasting is VERY hard on the body. Its like running ultras on 5 bananas per 100miles. I mean yeah, if your really sick and your body doesnt want to eat fair enough but I just cant see why people that dont have severe health issues should be fasting. Even then I would advise they live and eat proper before fasting even becomes a thought. Its like why focus on door handles when we havent even poured the cement for our health and fitness foundation. But thats the society we live in:(
wow this is an excellent eff'n video! I thought myself 2 b an emotional eater up until now. I have been binge eater & bulimic. The truth is u don't puke strawberries, bananas, watermelon & salads, even when u have negative issues. Only pizza, pastries, meats & hi fat hi carb dairy flour meat sugar "foods" Anytime I was n veganland, my bulimia "vanished" (binging didn't), even when the negative issues remained. Earth fruits help u 2 deal w life better. I'm having AHA moment!! EFF EMOTIONAL EAT'N!
I actually completely agree with you as a former "emotional" eater. I used to eat nothing but constant junk. After going raw I find my self not over eating anymore, and not craving all this random junk. And my depression has lightened up a lot. :)
The sad thing is, people don't even know there are many different kinds of starvation. My state, WV, is a perfect example of people who are completely starved of real nutrition. They're obese, really sick and self-medicating with junk food, cigs, alcohol, gambling, "hillybilly heroin" and meth.
Harley, you're the only raw person on here who makes sense. and isn't selling anything. Thank you so much Harley for being straight forward and passionate. XO
harley, i have suggestion for next episodes. why don't you show us some of your favorite smoothies and food combining or are your smoothies just made from bananas and dates? what foods you think are good combinations and what foods should be eaten alone? from your experience. yes i started to read the 80/10/10 diet, but just wanted to hear your thoughts.
@hardknotpassable get some cases of commercial bananas... get some medjool or any kind of dates and do the "datorade" shake... watch Harley's bananas and dates video, #180! low fat raw vegan from commercial fruits is a hell of a lot better than anything else besides all organic low fat raw vegan.
WHOAH!!!!!!!! that's SUCH a great example! "eating emotions away" is like saying you can actually "drink or sleep your emotions away"... This video is so POWERFUL for someone like me, THANK YOU!!
The relief I have felt to let go of restricting calories and just go for health I cannot begin to tell you. I am so carbed up I don't care if I am fat but I do care that I am stuck inside (supposedly) working and I cannot get out for a walk....
checked out nutridiary to see how many calories id get out of dates. a box of dates ( about 50 pitted medjool dates) = 3324 calories. which means i could get a days worth of energy from a box of dates. Right or wrong? seems like a little.
Harley, it's been shown that fat numbs negative emotions. Doug Graham's wife mentions this in videos, and Brendan Brazier (vegan triathlete) mentions this in his book. People eat fatty foods aka comfort foods to numb bad feelings. That is emotionally eating.
I agree that people who have constant hunger are probably under-carbed and under-nourished.
@IronCladBen Great question! But hoow come the fatty foods they mention are also sweet fatty foods? ;) Who just eats coconut oil by the spoonful or drinks olive oil to numb their emotions? NOBODY!
Donuts
Ice cream
Candy
Choc cake
marzipan
pizza
creamy pasta etc. All foods that are 'comfort foods' and get most of their calories from fat BUT if you took out the carb element, they wouldnt be 'comfort foods' no more.
I dont expect everyone to just buy what I say, but I want them to re-evaluate.
What dyou think of a rice based, fruit, veg, greens, based vegan diet Harley? You never really talk about non fruitarian veganism... It sounds like you dont like cooked veganism anymore then a SAD diet.
@fumanshu888 It makes dry rice eatable faster than putting it in cold water? And no, putting my hand in boiling water would hurt, I hope you dont do that. Does a banana tree falling on your head hurt?
@wordey123 i find a ripe fruit faster in the wild then you can make fire and cook your rice. ;)
you should define 'eatable' for you. our ignorance is our greatest enemy. ...
just because i'm able to eat something (put it in my mouth, chew it and swallow, and then somehow digest it) doesn't mean shit! ask a chemist, then a biologist and so on. or just common sense.
@fumanshu888 Okay, I'll worry about weather to cook or pick ripe fruit when we go back in time and I become dependent on the outdoors. Yes, death to molecules. I'm still gonna eat it and live to 80 and have a good life. I'm a vegan, dont shoot the messenger. Why dyou talk shit like that? No one wants to hear it.
@wordey123 it's about time you realise how much we are dependend on nature (aka outdoors LOL)! go ahead and cook you a dead meal. i eat fresh, thrive on a raw 80/10/10rv lifestyle and live to 140! when you prefer cooked rice or pasta over a banana, that's your choice.
@wordey123 Harley does not think it is optimal but has stated as is his second if he had not his first option available to him. Personally I do better on high raw partially cooked (rice, quinoa, beans - dinner only) diet at the moment. I woke up at about 04:45 this morning to get ready for work and ate about 3260 calories this day from fruits (like a kg of grapes), a few nuts/seeds (20gr), greens and rice with tempeh. Normally I would feel sleepy by now but I don't. Try to find your own balance.
So what about sedentary people on the SAD diet who seem to be so hungry at every meal without restricting their calories, are they not getting enough carbs or are they just not absorbing any nutrients?
@fortitude1981 CARBS!!! :) Body runs on simple sugars. Why do people eat desert AFTER a 1000-5000cal fat fest? The body is saying 'hey buddy! where the fuck is the simple sugars man?!'.
Simple sugars satisfy the best. Complex carbs satisfy next best. Look how much people undereat on carbs and how much emotional bs they carry around. The people that eat the most carbs are the most stable. The ones that eat the least, they freak out the most.
Haha! "Sweet fruit is the devil." Yeah...it couldn't POSSIBLY be all the processed food, flesh, & dairy most people eat...it's NATURAL fruit. (Still laughing...).
I would like to see you talk more about exercise and how it relates to the mindset of alot of raw food'ers out there, that think they're alright to sit back, do absolutely no exercise and eat raw food, expecting to be fit or in shape.
I think that's where alot of this caloric restriction mentality comes from.
People who have experienced trauma causing depression experience an imbalance with their neurotransmitters. Serotonin plays a part in regulating how much you eat. Appetite is stimulated by the hormone dopamine. Then, as you eat, serotonin is released to halt the release of dopamine and tell the body that it's had enough food. Low levels of serotonin or a low number of serotonin receptors weaken this process and can lead to overeating and weight gain.
@justagrl10 Look up the connection between eating enough carbs and your body making enough serotonin. They go hand in hand. Light bulb moment for billions when they find this out.
@durianriders 30 bananas a day should now be prescribed to all teenage girls whom have been sexually abused and traumatized? In additional to neurotransmitters being off balance, they also subconsciously overeat to hide their bodies, purposely to be unattractive to the opposite sex. Watch the message you are sending to young women- try not to laugh off emotional eating. It's no joke, Harley.

Wow we get this great info for free! I didn't have to pay out the nose to hear this! I didn't need an appointment and I didn't have to attend some seminar! I just got some of the best info in the world for free :) Thanks buddy
Thankyou Harley, this was is exactly the information that I was needing. I really appreciate you taking the time to produce these videos, and empower people to take back the joy in there life's. Kind Regards Kim
So if I'm 55kg I should be eating 2 and a half bananas a day and I'd meet my carb requirements.. bananas are about 20 kg of carbs each.... that still seems like too little right?
Watching this video must be painful to those that want the comfort of excuses. Harley just took away the justification and placed the responsiblity where it belongs, on me. This short term pain is much better than what I pay in the long run :)
@andydeals253 This is precisely why I watch harley's videos while drinking a 2000 calorie datorade! When Im carbed up Harley's 'style' does not get to me one bit, in fact it makes so much sense! The brain operates much better when carbed up. This is life people! If you are not switched on, and strong you will be your biggest and only obstacle every time! OK Im off to make friends with pain while I work out. Peace
My goal is to lose weight and I have had such a hard time. I have been 100% vegan since sept of 2010 and have lost 50 lbs through working out and staying about 60-80% raw while eating about 2500 cals/day. It seems as though working out or being vegan is almost not enough and I have to eat about 2500 cals a day to lose 2 lbs a week. If I eat more I will have to work out more than 2 hrs a day 4-5 days a week will I not?
What am I doing wrong? Why is it still so hard to lose weight?
@heidiheidi0 It has been my experience that in the beginning I feel that way but as I work out and continue, my appetite gets comfortable as I stay in the weight-loss zone. If there is a way that I don't have to do that, I would love to learn more though. That is why I inquired further.
It's an interesting group you are exposed to, as most people's problems are that they overeat versus under eat. Hence why so many are overweight. The crux of the matter is that they eat the wrong things, and this drives the appetite. Often one doesn't get the desire to gorge on fruit, though pizza is for many a different story.
I've seen teenage girls binge on cookies and icecream (both high fat) after breaking up with their boyfriends... But I agree with how carbohydrate and calorie restriction leads to ravenous eating, weight gain, and fatigue.
Even though your serious Saturday Night Live should hire you. You are very funny. I get it. I get what your say. You won't emotionally eat if you eat enough fruits. You would be great on SNL. In US we have massive amounts of refined carbs sugar foods from fast foods etc. Then calorie restive diets focus on high proteins low carbs. I am interested in book on the best raw food beginner book. I heard about fruit combining that certain fruits shouldn't be combined. Curious about that.
very good info and video.:) how it is put togheter in a clear way.:) for the most part it`s true I can say also... by my experiences too- i`ve started eating rice a copule weeks now.:)
ps: know how could treat candida(overgrowht)...and still eating fruit in that time? Anyway, thx.:)
this makes so much sense. I'm not a raw vegan, but most of my diet is raw fruits and greens, and it's true that when i'm not eating enough of those fruits it makes you 'crave' foods that are bad for you because of the high calorie content, and it's a horrible cycle (but it's fixed with fruit!)
I value your honest opinion BUT I know first hand that emotionally eating is possible. When on the SAD diet I still drink lots of water and eat fruits and veggies, good food bad food doesn't matter. I continue to eat after being full bc the food makes me feel good. When I am stressed or when I am happy I overeat on ANY foods...I don't stop at full..but you do make a lot of valid points :)
@bebIessed exactly! Bc I overeat Because I have a hard time dealing with my emotions. I commented on here bc there are more opinions that just one, especially when I have experienced what he is saying is non existent..I am talking past tense. I am doing something about my weight AND my emotions now :)
I got my emotions under control finally and thus no longer want to overeat :)
@aRawLifestyle i'd say its near impossible to overeat on a sweet raw fruits diet if u are even a semi active person . if i'm hungry for more fruit, i eat more . If your'e still hungry for more fruit, your'e not full .
You sound like my old 1stSgt in the Marine Corps: "Devil Dog, you've sprained your ankle-- didn't your SNCO's tell you to hydrate?" I'm just waiting for you to extol the good gospel of "moan-trin" [Motrin 800's]? lmao

I'm on a medium protein and fat, median carbohydrate diet.
Protein makes me sleepy and I easily go to sleep at night.
Without adequate protein, I can't sleep.
However, when I eat protein, it sometimes make me sleep during the day too.
I believe with all those excess carbohydrates that you are eating, you are awake all the time but you can't sleep very well during the night.
Where do you get your B vitamins? How bout fatty acids?
Eating 30 apples a day doesn't seem applicable.

So what about sedentary people on the SAD diet who seem to be so hungry at every meal without restricting their calories, are they not getting enough carbs or are they just not absorbing any nutrients?
fortitude1981 10 months ago

Goujiki 10 months ago
People who have experienced trauma causing depression experience an imbalance with their neurotransmitters. Serotonin plays a part in regulating how much you eat. Appetite is stimulated by the hormone dopamine. Then, as you eat, serotonin is released to halt the release of dopamine and tell the body that it's had enough food. Low levels of serotonin or a low number of serotonin receptors weaken this process and can lead to overeating and weight gain.
justagrl10 10 months ago 4
@justagrl10 Look up the connection between eating enough carbs and your body making enough serotonin. They go hand in hand. Light bulb moment for billions when they find this out.

@durianriders 30 bananas a day should now be prescribed to all teenage girls whom have been sexually abused and traumatized? In additional to neurotransmitters being off balance, they also subconsciously overeat to hide their bodies, purposely to be unattractive to the opposite sex. Watch the message you are sending to young women- try not to laugh off emotional eating. It's no joke, Harley.

Harley, another instant classic. You smacked the deep fried mars bar outta the park! ;)

So if I'm 55kg I should be eating 2 and a half bananas a day and I'd meet my carb requirements.. bananas are about 20 kg of carbs each.... that still seems like too little right?
heidiheidi0 10 months ago
@heidiheidi0 you need a new abacus :) try 25 bananas a day :)
Rawgasmic 10 months ago
@heidiheidi0 1 banana has ~27g carbs
so that's about 20 bananas.

Watching this video must be painful to those that want the comfort of excuses. Harley just took away the justification and placed the responsiblity where it belongs, on me. This short term pain is much better than what I pay in the long run :)
andydeals253 10 months ago 23

Why is it still so hard to lose weight?
zigzigerblat 10 months ago
@zigzigerblat the only way to lose weight is to feel a little bit hungry all the time in my experience...
heidiheidi0 10 months ago

FruitarianSwimster 10 months ago

@aladinclip I'm interested in knowing Harley's answer on candida as well. Keep me posted :)

this makes so much sense. I'm not a raw vegan, but most of my diet is raw fruits and greens, and it's true that when i'm not eating enough of those fruits it makes you 'crave' foods that are bad for you because of the high calorie content, and it's a horrible cycle (but it's fixed with fruit!)
aimeethegiraffe 10 months ago
I value your honest opinion BUT I know first hand that emotionally eating is possible. When on the SAD diet I still drink lots of water and eat fruits and veggies, good food bad food doesn't matter. I continue to eat after being full bc the food makes me feel good. When I am stressed or when I am happy I overeat on ANY foods...I don't stop at full..but you do make a lot of valid points :)

@aRawLifestyle You need to carb up and watch this video again cos you were obviously not paying attention. ;)

@durianriders I watched the whole thing, and eat jut a bit more carbs than u recommended..ty

@aRawLifestyle which is why you're overweight, logic anyone?
bebIessed 10 months ago
@bebIessed exactly! Bc I overeat Because I have a hard time dealing with my emotions. I commented on here bc there are more opinions that just one, especially when I have experienced what he is saying is non existent..I am talking past tense. I am doing something about my weight AND my emotions now :)
I got my emotions under control finally and thus no longer want to overeat :)
Much Love ;)

@aRawLifestyle i'd say its near impossible to overeat on a sweet raw fruits diet if u are even a semi active person . if i'm hungry for more fruit, i eat more . If your'e still hungry for more fruit, your'e not full .
